Name Approval from Council Gives Official Identity to Calgary’s Most Exciting New Community Development
The West Campus Development Trust is pleased to share that today’s vote of approval from City Council marks the official naming of the 200-acre residential and commercial development on lands owned by the University of Calgary.
Today’s announcement means the area will no longer be referred to as West Campus, but rather University District – a name chosen to demonstrate the burgeoning neighbourhood’s intrinsic alignment with the institution at its doorstep.
Also approved were the names of University District’s 13 streets, paying tribute to 13 university chancellors and their 50-year legacy of community leadership and volunteerism.
“We are both humbled and honoured by the support we’ve received from Council to date, culminating in today’s community naming approval,” said West Campus Development Trust president and CEO James Robertson. “This announcement marks an exciting milestone along with the measured and mindful building of an important new bridge to the city.“
The highly anticipated community and street names approval moves University District one step closer to its most exciting phase yet – groundbreaking, construction and transformation on the western edges of the University of Calgary’s main campus.
With it will come the University District’s turn to step into the urban development limelight in North America. Firmly guided by the West Campus Development Trust, the project sits poised and ready for its evolution into a world class urban village that everyone from residents and students to working professionals, travellers and day trippers will frequent for its services, scenery and vibrant social fabric.
The next exciting step for the development will be the release of additional community assets in the fall, including a range of engaging content channels intended to inspire and inform future builders, buyers, retailers and visitors alike. The WCDT proudly invites one and all to stay tuned.
