Master Plan

Inside University District

A new take on Calgary property, a new take on and meaning of community. The Master Plan for University District is so much more than a community map or visual display of land blocks to be developed. It’s our ‘WHY’; it answers why U/D is needed, the vision for what University District is here to contribute to the city, and a living, breathing expression of the multi-pronged and interrelated elements that make the community what it is.

Through collaboration with key stakeholders and with the input from our surrounding community and neighbours, U/D has been designed to be environmentally sound, socially responsible and financially solid over the long term. It builds on the character of the surrounding neighbourhoods, while strengthening the contribution the University makes to the Calgary community as a whole.

A Global Community of Campus Communities

Academic institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia have developed thriving and vibrant communities that combine campus life with local culture, unique architecture and amenities for both businesses and residents.

University District draws on the successes of these global academic communities, while speaking directly to the unique needs of Calgarians and their urban lifestyle desires.

“This Project will change the face of Calgary forever.” – Mayor Naheed Nenshi

Principles and Purpose

Our Master Plan came to life rooted in four pillars that have kept us on track, aligned with our vision for the community, and connected to the neighbours and neighbourhoods we have the privilege to flank.

University Linked

Next door to the University of Calgary, University District’s entrepreneurial thinking aimed at achieving the institution’s long-term goals influenced this innovative community vision. Rooted in the values and energy of this world-class academic institution, U/D welcomes residents from all backgrounds, ages, and life stages to connect, live, grow and thrive.

Mindfully Made

From the smallest aesthetic detail to the big ideas of environmental stewardship and community sustainability, every design decision is grounded in thoughtful process and collaboration. Whether it’s the diversity of shops on main street, walkable streets, or alternative energy solutions, details both small and large are carefully considered to maximize social, economic and environmental sustainability.

A Connected Community

Overlooking the Bow River Valley atop a scenic slope, and in the heart of Northwest Calgary, University District builds bridges between some of the city’s most desirable communities, services and amenities. From new fine dining, entertainment and retail shopping options, to world-class medical facilities and access to the vibrant energy of university life, it’s a community that draws on, and contributes to, the best of what Calgary has to offer.

Complete and Urban

Capturing the unique features of Northwest Calgary, University District is a new urban ideal. Natural green spaces set next to a vibrant main street and accessible thoroughfares and pathways, it’s a community designed for all ages, lifestyles and appetites. This is a complete, diverse, urban environment with all the amenities and services needed to live full and meaningful lives.
