Celebrating Small Business Week in University District

University District is home to many small businesses, offering amazing services to the community, like Curious Hair and Denim & Smith Barbershop. This enterprise is led by a brother and sister duo, Marisa and Stephen Rizzuto, who bring years of family experience in the hair industry to their business. Despite opening during the pandemic, their business has thrived with the support of the local community.

Says Marisa Rizzuto, “We were one of the first businesses here and it’s been amazing to watch University District grow.” With plans to expand their team, the Rizzutos are excited to remain an integral part of University District’s growth.

To celebrate Small Business Week, which runs from October 21 – 25, we asked a few other small businesses on our Retail Main Street to share the story of how they came to be.

Bottoms Up Scrubs

In 2013, nurse Linda Stevenett took over a small healthcare uniform shop and transformed it into Bottoms Up Scrubs, a go-to destination for healthcare professionals. With three Alberta locations and a thriving online store, Bottoms Up Scrubs meets the specialized needs of those in the medical field, offering a diverse range of uniforms and personalized service. 

Says General Manager Jenny Strand, “It’s an honour to serve healthcare professionals and build meaningful relationships within our community.”

The shop prides itself on inclusivity, ensuring all body types and genders feel comfortable in their uniforms. As they look to the future, they plan to expand further while continuing to support those who care for others.

Market Wines

Founded by Miles Palmer, Market Wines was created to offer a welcoming space where customers can explore quality wines, beers and spirits. With more than 30 years of retail experience, Miles has fostered a sense of community at University District, where neighbours can come together and enjoy great drinks. 

Says Palmer, “We wanted to be part of this neighbourhood and provide incredible wines to an incredible community.” 

With an eye to the future, Market Wines plans to expand to more cities in Alberta while continuing to source exceptional products for its customers.

Foxy Box

Owner Taheera Ferguson opened Foxy Box during the pandemic, driven by a desire to create safe, inclusive spaces for personal care services. Specializing in waxing and laser treatments, Foxy Box focuses on celebrating individuality and helping people feel their best.  As the Foxy Box Brand grows in Calgary, Taheera hopes to focus on giving back to the community to enrich the spaces they work, live and play in.

AdaptAbility

AdaptAbility was founded by Tara Nelson, inspired by her experience as a parent searching for specialized products for her son with autism. The store offers a sensory-friendly shopping environment, making it a welcoming place for individuals with special needs and their caregivers. 

Says Nelson, “Meeting the incredible families we serve is the most rewarding part and we look forward to expanding our business into more neighbourhoods in the city to help more families like ours.”

Mark Stephen continues his family’s legacy at Stephen Cleaners, a trusted name in Calgary since 1962. Alongside his wife Amber, Mark is committed to helping busy individuals Look Good. Feel Good.
