New Year, Best You: How University District Is Planning For A Great Year Ahead
January 23, 2018
New year, new you? We prefer “new year, best you!”
The start of a new year is filled with possibilities and opportunities for the way we lead our lives in the form of a resolution. This can apply to all sorts of positive change, like personal growth, lifestyle goals and aspirations.
Resolutions are made for almost any type of activity, goal or initiative. Whether related to wellness and fitness achievements (there’s never been a better time to sign up for a new class), or more in line with personal enrichment (vowing to take your vacation days this year, remembering to treat yourself and read the book that has been collecting dust on your bedside table. Making goals is incredibly helpful to motivate you and conquer them early on in the year.
The first month of the year is a great time to take stock of your life, providing important insight to make achievable goals and help lead you to live at your best — and Northwest Calgary is a great place to start.
University District’s own goals center on building a community that’s safe, sustainable and welcoming for people of all ages, making for a home that’s easier to live and thrive in. Through environmentally-focused initiatives like LEED ND Platinum, and integrating housing and facilities for aging residents, as well as making our community walkable (and putting essential services within reach), we’re looking toward a future of making wellness and accessibility part of our everyday.
Unsure of what your resolution should be? Not completely convinced that your resolutions are likely to be kept past January? Here are some locally sourced, U/D-approved ideas to help you decide on a resolution worth keeping.
Make your space a home

Does your place make you feel welcome, and invite opportunities for ideas, growth and good feelings? If not, this could be the year that you move toward building a space that makes you feel your very best.
Whether this involves finding decor inspiration in new design trends, incorporating some new personal touches, or to exploring a new community entirely, there’s never been a better time to think about what a home means to you.
Embrace everyday wellness
Fitness-based resolutions are popular for good reason, who among us wouldn’t want to lead our healthiest life?
Your wellness based resolution for the new year doesn’t need to include near-impossible feats of fitness, it could start with something as simple as checking out a new workout class, or even vowing to take a little bit of time each week to step outside for some fresh air. Feel free to start small, before working your way up to larger, loftier goals for the year.
From reimagining your eating habits and grocery list to exploring your community by foot and leaving the car in your garage—health-based resolutions can take many forms and can be adjusted to all abilities.
Get involved
Wondering how to make the best use of your free time during the new year? Your community would be happy to put your time and talents to use.
We can’t think of a better way to connect with your neighbours than through giving back to those among us who need it most. Volunteering is a great way to help your community grow, and to make some new friends in the process. Find some of our favourite NW volunteer opportunities here.
