Exceptional care and support for NW Calgary seniors at U/D

For couples, families, seniors and more, University District is certainly bringing Northwest Calgary a community that’s built for life!  We are creating a truly walkable neighbourhood that puts pedestrians — their safety and healthy lifestyle — first.

We have parks, green spaces, vibrant shopping, handy services and more.

Our builder partners are offering multi-family homes that allow us to stay close to the people who matter most at all stages of life. This commitment to building a community of age-inclusivity is shaping University District’s growth as new residents move into the area.

Aging in Place Makes Sense and Creates Belonging

While moving to a new home can be a stressful experience at any age, it is especially so for seniors, whose mental and physical health need to be a priority.

To help ease some of that stress and shed light on some exciting senior housing options, we are taking a closer look at life inside Cambridge Manor, a beautiful brand-new continuing care residence in University District that opened in June with an emphasis on the wellness benefits of aging in place.

At Cambridge Manor, an ‘age-in-place’ philosophy is embraced, which means a resident does not have to move again if their care needs change over time. The concept is vital to the people-first approach to seniors’ wellness, practiced by The Brenda Strafford Foundation, which takes care of operations at Cambridge Manor and is an industry leader in Alberta.

University District was chosen because of the conscientious effort on behalf of the developer — University of Calgary Properties Group — to be inclusive of all spectrums of the senior demographic, a key aspect of the aging-in-place philosophy.

To explore further the Aging in Place model, we spoke with Julie Arnold, communications and marketing manager for The Brenda Strafford Foundation.

“Aging in place means although the level of support changes as the individual’s needs change, they can stay living within the same community,” says Julie. “Some seniors require little support but have a desire for companionship and security in a safe and nurturing environment, while others’ wellness requirements have increased, and may continue to increase.

“At Cambridge Manor, we offer care along a continuum from assisted living with minimal support to extensive memory care for seniors living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. As people age in place, we can support them wherever they are without a need to relocate, which is much better for their overall wellness.”

Modern Facilities and Complete Services

Fitness, therapy, and health care services are on offer at Cambridge Manor, with 24-hour nursing staff on-site. A customized wellness plan is also tailored to each individual resident.

Red Seal Chef prepared meals and snacks are served, with COVID-19 protocols in place including staggered meal schedules in the dining room to allow for social distancing.

The Brenda Strafford Foundation Leads Research and Facilities

Wellness and healthy aging support are also offered to residents through a speaker series and programs in the community provided by The Brenda Strafford Foundation.

One of the Foundation’s four research programs at the University of Calgary is The Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging, which has a mandate for age-related research, interdisciplinary education, public policy, and community outreach. This connection between the UCalgary and University District ensures residents at Cambridge Manor will benefit from the latest knowledge and innovation in the field of aging and senior wellness.

There are more than 230 one-bedroom suites and studio units at Cambridge Manor, 75 of which are funded by Alberta Health Services.

One-bedroom suites and studios are tastefully decorated with warm, modern design and furniture that has comfort and functionality top of mind, including the convenience of a fridge and microwave in each unit.

Studio suites feature ensuite bathrooms and range in size between 301 to 323 sq. feet. Studio Suites are available on all four floors of Cambridge Manor, with access to all amenities and care levels.

Learn More About Maple!

Services at Cambridge Manor are also available at Maple, an independent-living community for adults 55-plus located next door, accessible by a Plus-30 walkway. One and two-bedroom units range from 580 to 1080 square feet.

Built by Truman, Maple is a community of condo owners and is another aging-in-place opportunity for seniors who want to stay in their homes as long as possible.

For a couple, if one spouse requires a higher level of care in Cambridge Manor, the other spouse in Maple can easily stay close and connected through the enclosed Plus-30 walkway! We look forward to welcoming our new neighbours!
