University District Design Profile: Brookfield Residential and The Ivy
February 15, 2017
Our Design Profile series from Brookfield Residential and Truman Homes explores the influences, inspiration and intentions behind the builds within University District. We spoke with Brookfield Residential to learn more about the background, influences and future of The Ivy, its landmark contribution to University District.
How would you describe The Ivy to somebody who hasn’t yet seen it? What’s the look and feel?
The Ivy is an architecturally progressive townhome project that brings an urban feel to the University District. Each home is designed to connect residents, neighbours and their surroundings. There is a central courtyard that will feature a play area, community gardens and gathering spaces–all designed to bring everyone together.

What were some of the architectural influences and inspiration behind Ivy?
The Ivy is designed for scale and place-making, to be a signature for the University District. There are three unique architectural styles that are rich in detail. An urban brownstone look is timeless with brick exterior, and the two modern styles bring a contemporary flair that is refined and bold.
The Ivy is the entrance to the University District, and the first impression we give to the community. Significant time and attention has gone into creating a development that will complement activities and future growth of University District—and change the face of mindful community planning.

Can you speak to the reasoning behind the use and selection of colour, fixture and texture within the unit?
Once inside the homes, the interiors will offer transitional and contemporary finishes. Warm, yet sleek; polished, yet inviting. From the light fixtures, to the countertops to the floors, every piece has been carefully selected to offer homeowners a lasting look.

There are four different palettes for The Ivy, all carefully chosen to reflect the influences that inspire the build. You can learn more about the chosen aesthetic of the units firsthand here from Rochelle Cote, interior designer.
Who is the quintessential Ivy person, if possible to describe?
From empty-nesters and downsizers, to young professionals and families, The Ivy is all about people who want a connected lifestyle. Residents can meet their neighbours in the courtyard, grab a coffee a few blocks away, or cycle to work without leaving the community.

What role does Ivy play within University District?
As The Ivy is the entrance to the University District, significant time and attention has gone into creating a development that will complement the activities and future development of this master planning inner-city community. It is architecturally ambitious and will stand as a landmark for the development and the city.
