If you keep track of University District community news, you may recognize Sam Lau’s name and smiling face. As one of the first people to move into the community, and as a person who happens to be exceptionally open and sociable, Sam has jumped into the U/D lifestyle and state of mind with both feet from the very start.
Living as he does in the Ivy, Sam has access to the very roots of this community, so he is uniquely positioned to not only understand where University District is coming from, but also to shape the social fabric of this place and help to create some of the initial connections and conversations that fashion the social mosaic of the neighbourhood.
As one of the first residents of our thriving community, Sam shares his perspective into life at U/D and his views on downsizing. See what this long-time Northwest resident, University of Calgary alumni and passionate community member has to say. Read his story here.
As a social butterfly and habitual connection maker, Sam was made for the holidays.
The darkest months are such a critical time for us Northerners to fight against the chill and make sure we foster our connections to family and friends, so people like Sam who take the time and effort to open their homes and spend their time to bring people together are so very integral to community building.
“At University District, we are building this community from the ground up,” he shares. “We have developments that are being constructed and people moving in all at the same time. People have a lot of the same wishes including wanting to know their neighbours and socialize more. We all just need a way to do it and often times someone to step up and lead the charge! That’s something I’m willing to do in the community.”
“I’ve been hosting get togethers for my family and friends where I live at the Ivy, with my neighbours at the Ivy, and also people from other buildings. As I get to know people I see common interests for those who might get along, so then I introduce them to each other and they get to know each other, and that’s how it all starts.”
Sam and his neighbours were the first generation of residents to call University District home, and as such they’ve pre-dated the arrival of some of the planned amenities and services that will define this future Northwest hub. Without the full gamut of retail and services in place, this plucky bunch have taken things into their own hands and found ways to build aspects of the community themselves as well!
“In the time that my neighbours and I have been here, we’ve created some more initiatives to get people to know each other better,” Sam shares. “We hosted a Neighbour Day in June, and about 50 people came out to this potluck we held. We also just started a social committee just recently for Northwestival, and we had around 20 people meet up here at the Ivy and head over to the festival and people met each other that way.”
Those kinds of efforts are the lifeblood of the non-physical connections a community is made of, and those links will not only grow over time, they will allow the fabric of the entire place to flourish into a multifaceted, fully fleshed home and thriving social network.
Hosting a holiday get-together? Spruce up your domestic game and make your home looks its best for your guests with these expert tips from resident interior designer with U/D builder partner Brookfield Residential.
The great equalizer of almost any social event is the food and drink we all share. Hanging out and chatting in a room or on a patio is great on its own, but one of the superpowers of good food is its ability to bond people together and create wonderful common experiences to share and grow from.
Sam knows this as well as anybody, so he’s found a few surefire recipes over the years that friends and family just love to share and get excited about.
Stay warm, keep fresh, and don’t let the early night hours throw your off your health routine. These top tips, tricks and stretches from YYC Cycle will help you reclaim your motivation and keep the heat turned up on your workouts this season. Plus check out the smoothie bowl recipe. It’s not only delicious, but will power you through your day and workouts!
Sam just found this adorable presentation method to turn fruit into either a faux-bouquet, or into a mini melon forest of delicious edible pine trees.
Next is a school time classic that the kids will love, and gives you a chance to make some cute personalized name holders for your guests. Turn your candy canes into fun little buddies with some dollar store craft items and give people something to laugh about.
Most importantly though, a dead simple, smash hit dessert recipe from Sam’s reserve: super simple almond butter cups. Yes, they taste as good as they look.
Believe it or not, these decadent pieces can be made in 20 minutes or less, and they are a smash hit with not only the average holiday guest, but people with sugar or carb reduction priorities in mind!
“These almond cups are a huge crowd pleaser because they look pretty, and they’re really easy to make,” Sam shares. “They turn out a little different every time, because it’s just whatever you have available and whatever you feel like doing to them.”
“I’m meeting a friend this week, and she’s on a keto diet which means no sugar and no carbs, so she craves chocolate and generally can’t have it. I found this sugarless chocolate and I’m going to make these almond butter cups for her. She made a comment last year, she was like “People on the keto diet would pay for this stuff!”
Here’s how he does it:
Ingredients
Kitchen tools
Step 1: Get prepped
Lay out a bunch of mini muffin cups. If you’re using paper cups, a mini muffin tray will help them keep their shape. Silicone cups are a great alternative and are thick enough that a muffin tray isn’t required.
Step 2: Melt your chocolate
Melt the chocolate chips. Put the chocolate chips into a microwave safe bowl and microwave it in 30 second intervals until the chocolate melts or make your own double boiler by putting a large bowl on a saucepan filled with water on the stove.
Then using a small spoon, fill the bottom of the cups with chocolate. Put the cups in the freezer for two minutes to quickly set the chocolate or wait until it naturally sets. If the chocolate doesn’t set first, the next layer (almond butter) will mix together with the chocolate.
Step 3: Add your almond butter
Once the chocolate has set, use a small spoon to put a dab of almond butter in the centre of the cup. To better control, use a second spoon to push the almond butter off the first spoon. Put the cups in the freezer for a few minutes to set the almond butter.
Once set, use a small spoon to cover the almond butter with melted chocolate.. If the chocolate doesn’t sit flat, you can tap the cup against the counter a few times to make it settle. You’ll also be covering the cups with toppings to hide imperfections.
Step 4: Now come the toppings!
Add the toppings before the top layer of chocolate sets. Buy your toppings in small quantities from bulk bins and aim for a variety of colours, shapes and textures.
Once the chocolate has set either in the freezer for two minutes or naturally, peel the mini muffin cups away and they’re ready to serve.
With a couple of delicious tricks up your sleeve, you’re well on your way to hosting and getting that warm holiday glow from putting smiles on your friends’ faces. However, the pressure of creating social spaces can get to people some times, and stress can sometimes mean the best intentions of fun and happiness don’t always happen for the host and/or hostess who has taken the time to open their home.
To that end, Sam shared some of this thoughts on how to make your holiday get together as relaxed and energizing for you as it is for your comfortable, warm guests. Let’s take a look!
Always plan your menu ahead of time and make sure you have all of the ingredients, including extras or substitutes.
Try working backwards with your schedule. If you’re planning to host dinner at 6:30pm, that’s when the food must be ready. Therefore, work backwards in time to figure out when you need to start every step. The schedule can also help you see whether your plan is feasible or whether adjustments need to be made.
It’s important when playing host to always have a back up plan. Have ingredients handy to make quick dishes in case the original plan doesn’t succeed. For instance, if you’re making a pie for dessert and it doesn’t work out, you can still build a dessert using the ice cream that was going to be used as a pie topping. Simply dice up some fruit, add pantry ingredients such as nuts, chocolate chips, coconut flakes and icing sugar, and voila, you have a dessert that’s going to look pleasing and taste satisfying.
Get to know your community. If you need to buy food or craft items at the last minute, it’s good to explore ahead of time to know what’s available nearby. That way, you’re not running around during the Christmas rush any more than necessary.
Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned host, keep things simple and try to avoid new recipes for the first time. At the very least, try to make it for yourself beforehand as an experiment before preparing it for guests.
Enjoy yourself. Hosting should be fun, not stressful. If you’re not having fun, then it’s time to make some changes.
The holidays have all the potential to be the most fulfilling and enriching time of the year, so be sure to follow the advice of an experienced superhost like Sam and make the most of this festive season!
Winter may be chilly, but it’s also a time of year where we wake up to freshly fallen snow that turns our landscapes into a magical winter wonderland. It’s a great time of year and although us humans pretty much know how to prepare ourselves for when the mercury dips, our pets need a little more help to make sure they are warm and well-cared for during Calgary’s cooler months.
University District and our future retail partner Pet Planet are here to help! We sat down with Sally Kananen, Director of Animal Health and Product Knowledge with Pet Planet for its top tips and product suggestions for when the weather outside is frightful.
From protecting fur babies that enjoy romping in the snow to ways you can entertain your pet indoors when the wintry winds blow. Keep reading to find out how you can protect your four-footed family members and ensure a safe and happy winter for all.
Let’s get started but before we do, let’s introduce you to Pet Planet!
Mark your calendars, pack your mittens and bring the whole family, including your four-legged furries to Northwestival, University District’s annual winter outdoor festival! Join us on December 8 from 1pm to 6pm at for an afternoon packed full of family friendly holiday surprises and all things merry and bright that make the Northwest worth celebrating. After the passing of a family dog to cancer, Laura Leah English and her mother launched its flagship store to Calgarians in 1996, and has been making waves (and wags!) ever since.
The inspiration?
“We wanted to provide a community-based pet food store founded on pet health wellness through education, where owners could make healthy choices for their furries to help them live longer, happier and healthier lives,” notes Sally.
From products to grooming and its self-service washing stations, Pet Planet takes a more holistic approach to everything it offers.
“Pet Planet is a no rawhide retailer and has been the only pet retailer to never offer this on our shelves,” she adds.
Twenty-three years later, the local family business has grown to over 50 locations reaching coast to coast in Canada, with twenty of those stores based in Calgary. University District will be home to it’s 21st bringing with it, its bright and vibrant atmosphere that’s loved by two-and four-legged visitors alike.
U/D residents, neighbours and their furry companions can look forward to Pet Planet’s membership program which offers customers special discounts on products and services, as well as weekly promotions such as Bone Tuesday, Treat Thursday and Free Biscuit Friday.
When cooler weather arrives, we ready ourselves with coats, scarves, mittens, hats and warm blankets but what about our four-legged companions? Give your pet the extra attention it needs with these pet care tips that will help keep your furry family members happy and healthy until the grass starts growing again. Let’s take a look!
Doggy coats, sweaters and booties, oh my! We may admire our pets’ plush coats, but as beautiful as fur is, it’s not a perfect insulator, especially during Calgary’s winter months. Use sweaters or cozy coats that reach from the neck to the base of the tail to keep your pupper warm during outdoor excursions to the Urban Dog Park in U/D or nearby Edworthy Park. Remember, a good rule of thumb is if it’s too cold for you in your winter coat, it’s too cold for your pet.
If you do a lot of walking on sidewalks or your pup is bothered by the snow or ice touching its feet, a pair of snug booties may make the outdoor journey much easier and can help protect your pet’s paws from ice and rough road salt. A bonus: booties should help the house stay cleaner, too!
Product Suggestion: RC pet dog coats. Choices vary from light shells and base layers to coats that offer superior protection and high-end features. They also come in popular colours and patterns, as well as many sizes to fit all doggy shapes.
Cold weather brings icy sidewalks, and those layers of salt meant to melt it away can be dangerous for your pup causing paws to dry out, crack and bleed. Keep your best friend’s furry little paws in tip-top shape and shield those delicate toes from cold, ice and salt burn with some soothing paw balm. Simply massage it on to your pet’s paw pads before a walk around the neighbourhood to create a moisturizing wax barrier that will protect them the elements. Then wipe and rinse after each walk to remove any excess salt.
Tip: Trim away! If your dog has furry feet, keeping the fur between paw pads trimmed can help prevent salt, snow and ice from getting lodged in-between your pooches toes.
Product Suggestion: Pet-Tek Paw Balm is an all-natural paw and skincare product that combines safe and edible ingredients that will soften, repair and protect your four-legged companion’s skin, paws, nose and ears.
There’s nothing quite like a cozy bed and extra blankets to burrow into after a long day of frolicking in the snow to make the furry in your life feel warm and well-cared for. To help inspire you, check out these expert tips and quirky ways to keep your space primed for you and your four-legged fellows.
If you and your doggo are venturing outdoors to nearby Bowness Park for an extended period in the chilly weather, add a snood to their regular winter get up! A must-have during wintertime, a snood will protect your pet from hypothermia and frostbite, keep their ears and neck toasty and warm, making our harshest winter days feel healthily warm.
Product Suggestion: RC Pets Summit and Polaris Snood is a hat and scarf combo that will keep your fur baby’s ears and neck warm during cold, windy conditions. The super stretchy fabric and drawstring cinch will allow your pupper to move around with ease while keeping them cozy and snug!
Like humans, our pets don’t necessarily get all the nutrition they need from their diet. From supplements that provide support for arthritic joints and fatty acids to reduce shedding to antioxidants and probiotics. Vitamins can help with a variety of issues, including our wintry conditions. Dry and cold weather can do a number on your pet’s skin. Adding a supplement such as coconut oil to their diet can help keep your pet’s skin and coat shiny and healthy.
Tip: Give your furry the boost it needs with some supplements! Consult your local animal healthcare professional if you have questions about what supplements to give your pet.
Plan on getting your pet a present this holiday? Give your four-legged friend the gift of joy with the merriest treats, toys and accessories. To help you plan your holiday shopping list and to keep your spending in check, the pros at Scotiabank share some tips and ways to stay on budget this season. Take a look here!
Frosty winter weather can limit the time pet parents and their four-legged companions spend outdoors, but your fur baby still needs to be entertained when being outdoors seems more foolhardy than fun. Never fear! You can still exercise your pet during the year’s coldest and iciest months.
Spend some much-needed quality time your fur baby with an outing to Pet Planet. Build a small agility course out of piles of snow in your backyard (if you dare!) or even indoors with pillows, couches, beds or anything you have around the home. Try doggie day care and playing toss or mini-fetch with a toy in the house to tug-of-war, obedience classes, teaching new tricks or commands and treadmill walks. There’s so many ways to help your furry burn off some energy and keep them stimulated!
Tip: Get creative and try a game of hide and seek to practice the “come” command or stuff a Kong toy to make your furry work for his/her treat. Pets love it!
Just like their owners, pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in the wintertime. Naturally, feeding your furry a little more during the cooler months can provide much-needed calories, and giving them plenty of water will keep your pet well hydrated, which is especially important if they’re wearing extra layers outdoors. Remember to reward your four-legged companion with a couple treats for braving the wintry conditions and to boost their energy levels!
Tip: A high quality, whole foods diet will help ensure a healthy coat and good energy for the season.
Pay special attention to your loyal friend’s wellbeing by keeping these winter care tips in mind. And don’t forget that cuddles with your canine or feline buddy are a great way for everybody to keep warm!
Ah, winter is here and with it comes the wind, the snow, the cold – oh, the cold! It’s no wonder wintertime is the season of hibernation. It’s hard enough to muster up the motivation to walk to the bus stop once the mercury drops, never mind braving Calgary’s frigid temperatures for a much-needed workout. The lures of a comfy couch, cozy pajamas, mulled cider and a good book become all the more appealing.
Good news! We connected with YYC Cycle, a local fitness studio that’s spinning its way into University District in 2021, for some tips, tricks and stretches to help reclaim your motivation and keep the heat turned up on your workouts this season.
Founded in 2013, YYC Cycle got its start after three born-and-raised Albertans passionate about fitness decided to swap their footwear for cycle shoes. The owners saw an opportunity to create an innovative, dynamic form of group exercise that shakes up what indoor cycling can be, and born was YYC Cycle – a fitness and lifestyle studio run by locals for the locals.

Keeping your workout motivation during the winter is hard, but with these simple tips you can help beat your winter workout blues and get back to feeling great again.
Whenever you need some extra motivation, make your workout a social activity. Make dates with friends to go to exercise classes, join a sports team, connect with a personal trainer, or bring co-workers to a holiday team building sweat session. Finding a partner will help you stay accountable, will give you a reason to continue when you feel like giving up during those cold, dark winter days.

Do you have the workout “blahs”? Doing the same exercise routine, day by day, week by week can be mundane. Challenge yourself by having a workout “adventure” once a week! It will force you to be fully engaged with the activity, helping you bust out of that winter rut and get back into gear.
Mix things up by trying a new group exercise class or checking out a new running route. Instead of a leisurely bike ride on a reclined cycle, give spin a try. Never tried an interval workout? Now’s your chance! This holiday season try something new.
Suggestion: Getting family or friends together? Book a private spin or fitness class rather than a table at a restaurant.
An exciting workout should stimulate all your senses and your hearing is no exception. Having some fresh music to get you pumped and keep you going is key. Consider revamping your playlist and adding a new batch of up-tempo favourites to see how a fresh playlist can make a difference!
Suggestion: Spotify has a number of lively playlists to get you moving to the beat. Check out its Hype, Power Workout and EDM Workout playlists.
Whether you choose to embrace the cold with a refreshing morning walk, hit the gym on your way to work or try a new yoga routine from the comfort of your own home, always start your day with a hearty, healthy breakfast! Check out this simple yet delicious recipe from Chef Mauro Martina of the wildly popular all-day breakfast and brunch spot and future UD retailer – OEB Breakfast Co.
Whether you’re trying a spin class for the first time, taking your pooch for a wintry walk, shovelling your sidewalk (or a neighbours!) or even building a snowman with the kids or grandkids, now that its winter it’s even more important to remember to stretch. When it’s cold out, muscles tend to tighten, making them more prone to injury. Set aside a few minutes every morning or while watching your favourite TV show or holiday movie and use the following routine to get started!
Majority of us spend our day in a forward flexed position. Release that tension with a chest opener – it will feel like a sweet gift for your body!
The move: Sit up tall, elongating the spine. With a deep inhale, feel your torso expand. Bring your hands behind back to the base of your spine and interlace your fingers. Inhale and lift your shoulders towards your ears and release them back down as you exhale. Repeat 3-5 times or as needed.
After some sweaty fun on the spin bike or a day of cleaning and chasing after young kids, bringing some length into the side of your body will leave you feeling energized.
The move: Anchor your bum on your mat, chair or saddle if you have a bike at home. Inhale deeply to create length. On the exhale reach up with your right arm over towards the opposite side, creating a crescent moon shape with your side-body. Keep your shoulders relaxed and allow this stretch to be felt through the hip and the obliques. Repeat on the other side.

If you run, cycle, or sit all day at work, you might have tight hips. Relieve tension and strengthen your hip muscles with this simple yet effective stretch. Remember, do not force yourself into a position that is painful or affects your breathing.
The move: Begin by sitting on the floor with your knees bent and your feet on the ground. Bring the soles of your feet together and allow your knees to fall out to the sides. The closer your hips are to your heels, the deeper the stretch will feel. Place your hands on your feet and gently press down on your thighs with your forearms to deepen the stretch. Hold for 30 seconds.
Sometimes motivation goes beyond the workout routine. It is easy to lose sight of your diet when the weather turns and the chill arrives. Keep on top of your nutrition with these easy meal prep tips and weeknight meal plans from our friends at Save-on-Foods. Putting some thought into your meals will do wonders and it’s a great way of keeping your day organized.
Brightly coloured fruits and fiber-rich seeds combine to make a Superpower Seed Berry smoothie bowl recipe that’s basically edible art – and it’s as tasty as it is beautiful! Jam-packed with nutrient dense foods, this smoothie bowl will keep you satisfied for hours, giving you the energy you need to power through your day and your toughest workouts.
Create your own “work of art” by adding toppings you love! From granola and mixed nuts to dried fruit, coconut shavings, nut butter, chocolate chips, fresh fruit and more. However you choose to dress your smoothie bowl, dream big because the options are endless. Let’s get blending!
Ingredients
Step 1: Blend your smoothie
Using a high-powered blender, blend the frozen banana, berries, chia seeds, and enough water to cover the ingredients.
Tip: For a creamier taste use non-dairy milk instead of water.
Step 2: Add your toppings
Pour your smoothie mixture into a bowl. Sprinkle your remaining ingredients – blueberries, granola, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds – on top and enjoy!
Making simple changes to your fitness routine can make all of the difference this winter season. We hope these simple tips and stretches help you work towards a stronger and happier you!
From the outset, University District has defined its community through non-physical means. When much of the neighbourhood lived only in architectural drawings and concepts, and actual brick-and-mortar buildings were just starting to emerge on the Bow River valley ridge, University District built something just as valued: a sense of connection and togetherness.
The goal for University District is to create connections first, and build on that foundation, and there isn’t a better time to stoke the fires of warmth, connection, and celebration than the holiday season. Among other annual events in the community, Northwestival is an especially formidable way to collaborate for fun. during winter, we Northern folk must band together to survive and thrive! And Northwestival is a wonderful way to do just that and warm up to winter as a community!
If you’re unfamiliar with Northwestival, here’s the basic recipe: start with a big, central green space; add some big, cozy tents, some igloos, and a few bonfires to keep warm and smores; mix in some adventurous food vendors (and coffee!); whip up some top tier technical and audio production; fill a big stage with fun, family friendly performance talent.
The secret ingredient is a whole neighbourhood full of people. And voila! Northwestival is born. It is a gathering place for merchants, vendors, gourmets and creatives local to North West Calgary and area, somewhere for community to grow despite the cold and snow, and a fun way to spend an afternoon wandering with the family and Fido in tow.
Central Park, the old stomping grounds for Northwestival has officially broken ground, marking an important milestone for our thriving community. Upon completion, park-goers will be able to enjoy a concert staging area, a winter ice skating rink, BBQ pits, patio space, interactive play features, a public plaza and so much more. To learn more about this exciting project, click here.
Northwestival’s first events have all taken place on a field just east of the Discovery Centre. Though it looked a little nondescript then, that location was chosen with purpose. That field will become University District’s Central Park in 2022. Once the transformation is complete, what was once a soccer field will become a vast network of pathways, water features and green space dedicated to the natural, organic connection that defines University District.
It’s quite poetic to have held the inaugural Northwestival at that location, since that festival is part of the DNA of the community as it grows, and over time Northwestival will again take over Central Park to light up the holiday nights with warmth and merriment, many years on, with memories to spare and laughter to share.
This year, with construction now underway on the soon-to-be Central Park, an exciting new location at NW Commons park will be Northwestivals home and presents a fresh place for this annual get together.
Are you planning to bring your four-legged best friend to Northwestival? Before you brave the cold, make sure your pooch is warm and well-cared for with these winter care tips and suggestions from our friends at Pet Planet.
So let’s get specific here: what’s happening at Northwestival on Dec. 8 from 1-6 pm? What can excited Calgarians get a taste of at this gathering space of good holiday vibes?
One of the most critical focal points of Northwestival is the peanut butter drive in support of I Can For Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing Calgary children with healthy meals. The local charity started by its founder Sutton Garner, an inspiring 15-year-old changemaker, will be on-site during the festival accepting unopened jars of peanut butter (or other nut butter) or cash donations. Donations will also be accepted at the Discovery Centre before and after Northwestival.
Did you know during Northwestival 2018, generous Calgarians donated 665 jars of peanut butter to help feed youths in need. Because of your donations I Can for Kids was able to feed hungry children in more than 60 communities in Calgary during the summer months. This year, let’s raise even more to help support those in need. We can do it!
Beyond that, who and what is returning? Heritage Roasting Company will be on one of the most important duties of the day, that is, hot drinks, of the caffeinated or non-caffeinated varieties, graciously sponsored by builder partner Avi Urban who will top it off with some surprises of their own!
Their ethos is to provide the highest quality beans at the ideal roast level for each and every variety they stock, and its history of learning to roast beans on an open fire in the mountains helped them gain a truly intimate knowledge of what makes great, memorable coffee.
Sip these wholesome drinks down by the fire pits and melt some s’mores, both generously provided by Gracorp, to get that full belly holiday feeling. Patrons with a sweet tooth will likely find the Cababe á Sucre (maple taffy station) the perfect solution thanks to sponsor and builder partner Brookfield Residential.
Adults in the crowd (and some of the more adventurous teens) will remember BATL and its axe throwing game, so be sure to roll their way if you’re looking to get your blood and adrenaline pumping in the chilly weather.
Hip Image returns with one of the biggest hits of Northwestival, a holiday themed photo booth for your family’s fun portraits. Don’t forget to dress up a little wacky for this one!
Hands-On returns with its Winter Workshops in the big central gathering tents. Be ready to not only bring back a classic workshop in the Ugly Sweater making extravaganza, there’s a new workshop in town appropriately a Gingerbread Cookie Decorating collaboration between facilitators Hands-On YYC and 8Cakes, a local bakery providing all the pre-made cookies and decoration supplies — with gluten and dairy free options even!
As always, some new elements will be blowing through University District, and in this case two of the fresh puzzle pieces relate to the dynamic stage talent curated by supporting partner BassBus, the technical team behind the ground game of the festival.
When booking talent for Northwestival, Baran Faber and the BassBus team have accessibility and universality top of mind. “Tons of families pass through this festival every year,” he shared, “so we always look for talent that can appeal to the huge range of lifestyles and age groups University District appeals to. We know this community wants fun, they want a bit of bombast, and they to get moving and dance a little.”
To that end, Northwestival has recruited four top notch, family friendly, fun highlight performance acts. The first is the Rondel Roberts Band, a rollicking five piece fronted by the charismatic and colourful Rondel, with a catalog of covers from reggae to funk to pop to soul to hip hop. They’re as upbeat as it comes, and we know even Grandma will want to get up and dance when they hit the stage.
Hip hop dance studio Pulse Studios have a compellingly titled piece called Beast Machine, so without a doubt their big, bad crew of a dozen or more passionate kids will bring some serious heat to the chilly proceedings.
The performances aren’t relegated to conventional stage performances either, Northwestival will harness the unusual — as usual. A fire performance from performance troupe Body Art Motion, freshly returned from a run of shows in Saudi Arabia, will literally get fires burning, and The Hitmen Drumline will perform throughout the day, with some crowd interaction peppered in to spice up the day.
Help inspire change! Learn all about I Can For Kids and how Sutton Garner is showing Calgarians firsthand how to make a difference in our city. Read on here.
At the end of the day, the deepest days of winter are the moment for us all to take stock of our lives and loved ones and remember not only where we come from, but where we’re going. Such moments are the stuff true communities are built on, and University District has known that from the start. The time, the effort, the blood, sweat and tears it takes to craft a truly engaging, interesting way ultimately form the emotional bonds that comprise the exact goal University District has always professed to: connected, mindful community.
So bust out those sleigh bells, throw a Santa hat on your canine companion, and sidle on down to warm up to winter with entertainment, some shows to boot, crafts to gift, and memories to treasure.
The winter holiday season may well be Northwest Calgary’s most magical time of year. The glistening snowy white flocked trees in Edworthy Park, splendour of University District’s winter scene and all the dazzle of holiday decorations throughout the quadrant.
While the holiday season comes but once a year, for many people it can be an expensive time of year. Gift giving, ugly sweater parties, work festivities and flights to see loved one can really add up, making the holidays a prime time for conscious spending to fall by the wayside.
Thankfully the pros at Scotiabank, Canada’s international bank and leading financial services provider in the Americas and a future University District local resource have some tips to help keep you on track so that you don’t get your tinsel in a tangle.
With enough planning, savvy and creativity – and a holiday savings plan to boot – your Yuletide can go from frenzied and frazzled to fun and fabulous. ‘Tis the season to start trimming – your budget — not just your tree! Let’s get started.
Our retailer list continues to grow at University District, and there are more announcements to come. Find out which beloved retailers are coming to our bustling retail district here!
Gift giving can be a real budget-buster if you don’t have a plan. Make shopping for the holiday season easier by developing a solid strategy an elf would be proud. Start by setting out a holiday budget that you can afford. Remember to include those small and often forgotten expenses. These include holiday photos, wrapping paper, travel, stamps, cards, decorations, specialty foods and holiday-themed activities (Ugly sweater party. Need we say more?). They can pile up faster than the presents in Santa’s sleigh.
Next, set money aside or open a holiday spending account with your financial bank. This will help you stay on budget and will separate holiday spending from regular, day-to-day expenses. Just make sure it’s a free checking account!
Pro Tip: Get a head start in 2020. Start saving in January to make shopping during the holiday season easier. Manually put aside money each month or create an automatic transfer into a separate savings account so you’ll be better prepared for next year.

Here’s your chance to think about all the important people in your life! From the moment you walk into a store, potential gifts pull at your senses and vie for your attention and dollars. With a list, you’ll be less likely to impulse shop and more likely to stick to your budget. Create a list with the names of the people you plan to treat, how much you will spend and a rough idea of what you plan to buy them. The process will be smoother and your holiday savings potentially a lot higher. Things just got merrier!
Pro Tip: Always add a few extra gifts to your shopping list. These gifts should be generic in case you receive a surprise gift or forget to buy for someone. It can ease your mind and save you from scrambling to find something at the last minute. Also consider using an app like Santa’s Bag or GiftPlanner to help keep track of your holiday list.

Bring the festive season indoors! From easy projects and tips, these festive ideas from resident interior designer with Brookfield Residential will add a new lease of life to your interiors without breaking the bank. Take a look at Chloe Leung’s cheerful ways to spruce up your home, plus find out how to make a quick, cute wreath.
Stretch your holiday budget by becoming a surprisingly smart and savvy shopper. Once you have an idea of the gifts you will be purchasing, research where you can find the best deals. Take advantage of specials and Black Friday sales where you can snag cheap essentials at heavily discounted prices.
Pro Tip: Always comparison shop and sign up for e-mail notifications from retailers you are most likely to buy from and check their website frequently and use couponing sites such as Save.ca, Websaver.ca and Smartsource.ca to find current deals to help you deck the halls with boughs of savings!
Get to know your old friend “cash” again! Sticking with a cash diet during the holidays will make you more mindful of the money you’re spending and naturally keep you on budget.
Once you have determined your budget for each person, keep a running tally on paper, on an app or create an envelope system (one envelope per person). It’s old school but it works! This means you may only be able to buy one new tacky sweater for this holiday season, but your holiday savings will thank you.
Pro Tip: If you choose to use a credit card, try to use only one and preferably one where you can accumulate points that can be used towards holiday purchases. Always try to stay within a total that you can afford to pay back in full to avoid interest charges.
Jump-start your day of holiday shopping with a hearty, healthy and nourishing breakfast! Take your taste buds on a culinary adventure with this quintessential 15-minute breakfast recipe from future University District retailer, OEB Breakfast Co.! It’s simply egg-static!
The key to sticking to a budget is to track your spending. Whether you choose to bring your gift list along with your budget sheet on every shopping trip or use a digital app or spreadsheet, using a spending log is essential during this time of year. From extra Ubers to last-minute gifts, expenses can add up quick but by keeping track of the cost of your holiday-related outings and expenses, you’ll be able to keep your spending in check and budget more accurately for next year.
Pro Tip: Consider an app like Spendee to help track your holiday expenditures and even your everyday expenses. It’s easy to use, intuitive and free!

It’s the most wine-derful time of the year! Giving the gift of wine is perfect for the wine lover in your life. Whether you’re giving it as a hostess gift, bringing it to a holiday gathering, or wrapping it for a gift exchange, these budget conscious suggestions from our friends at Market Wines are sure to please. Take a look here!
Don’t get caught up in the spending frenzy this season – follow these creative ways to save to get you through the holidays with money left in your pocket, while still being able to enjoy all the seasonal festivities with family and friends.
Embrace potlucks!
‘Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry, but sometimes playing host or hostess during the holidays can feel more like a burden than a blessing. If you’re hosting a holiday event, embrace the idea of a good ol’ fashioned potluck! Let your guests know you’re going to make the main dish, but that you’d appreciate help on sides, appetizers, desserts and drinks. Spread the holiday cheer and even assign Christmas games and activities to nieces and nephews!
Two words: Gift Exchange
From an office Secret Santa to a bash with good friends where no one can remember the White Elephant rules. Make gift giving feel joyful again with a gift exchange experience to remember! Not only do they make for a fun holiday activity, and a great way to connect through experiences, they are great for those on a tight budget.
Rethink traditions
Holiday traditions make the season a magical time of year. While traditions are important and admirable, they don’t have to be expensive to be memorable. Consider activities such as baking together, watching a movie with hot chocolate, touring the neighbourhood for holiday lights, or check out daily deals on Groupon or Livingsocial for discounts on local attractions, Christmas festivals and performances. By making inexpensive traditions part of your celebration, you can save money without skimping on the festivities and memories!
Get creative and make it personal
This year instead of purchasing a gift from a big box store, give a gift that lasts! Perhaps help a friend or loved one by offering to babysit. Allow the creative side of you to flourish by making gifts like handmade soaps, jewellery and jams for friends and baked goods for your neighbours or your kid’s teacher. Or take a page out of University District’s book and build meaningful connections by spending quality time with an elderly relative, shovelling a neighbours sidewalk, or helping a friend clean her home the day after a holiday party. Remember being thoughtful can have a lasting and more memorable effect than breaking the bank.
Focus on giving back
In the midst of the holiday scramble, make it a priority to give back to your community. Give your kids a break from the “gimmes” and focus on someone less fortunate. Volunteer at nearby Ronald McDonald House, assemble care packages for nearby hospitals, perform random acts of kindness or make a donation. After all, ‘tis the season for a little merry-making!
It’s all too easy to get caught up in the spending cycle during the holidays. However, with a plan in place, tips on how to stretch each holiday dollar, a focus on family and making connections, and a sensible spending plan, you’ll be able to firmly sit in the driver’s seat of your own sleigh.

It’s October: time to dig out the grill, don your team colours and gather your crew for a tailgate. Football season is here!
Whether you’re planning an all-day parking lot extravaganza with a big group next door at McMahon Stadium for the Grey Cup or inviting people over to watch the pros at home, you’ll need the goods and gear to make sure your pre-game party runs smoothly.
To make your tailgate party a touchdown with game day fans, University District connected with Elizabeth Chorney-Booth, local influential food journalist and personality for tips and ideas designed to make you look and feel like a tailgating MVP.
From portable grills to oversized games and the small items you never knew you needed, let’s kick off the season with friends and family, and of course, football!
Sandwiches are great any time of day and are a surefire way to please everyone at your next tailgate party! Up your sandwich game and order a platter from a nearby Press’d Sandwich Shop or make your own with Press’ds recipe for their number one seller – the California Club. It’s impossible to eat just one!
Tailgating can be (and often is) an all-day affair. Having the right gear can make or break your game day festivities. Whether you are cheering for the pros or your favourite collegiate team, spice up your tailgating setup and enjoy the event in style with these game day essentials.
What’s a tailgate without a grill? A small portable grill that’s robust and reliable can turn up the heat and cook up some great tailgate specialities, at home and on location. Don’t forget the necessary grilling accessories such as propane or charcoal, a lighter, grilling tools, lighter fluid and of course safety gear!
Tip: Visit Barbeques Galore and peruse its wide selection of grills.
There’s nothing quite like the experience of watching the hard-hitting clash of two Canadian football teams in person, surrounded by friends, family and fans. Want to be at the game and see the action live? Get your tickets here!
Don’t sacrifice comfort at your tailgate this season. Take your cold beverage, sit back and relax. Collapsible chairs and stools are a staple at any football party and will become your closest confidant of comfort. When choosing chairs, think easy-to-use, sturdy, varying degrees of portable, and above all, actually nice to sit in!
Tip: Going all out? Add your team spirit with CFL team themed folding chairs. Get them here.
Whether you’re rooting for the home squad or cheering in enemy territory, let your super-fan out with team-inspired threads. Blankets and throws are a sure way to rep for your team while keeping yourself and guests cozy during Calgary’s cooler months.
Tip: Visit your CFL Team Store or Amazon and place an order for your very own team themed blankets and throws.
A good tailgating party needs a great cooler for your food and even more importantly for your beverages. Bring a cooler packed with your favourite drinks on ice. Don’t drop the ball! Be prepared with koozies, corkscrews, bottle openers and an additional cooler for those gameday delights as well.
Tip: Instead of a standard plastic cooler, chill drinks in a wheelbarrow! Pick up a cooler or wheelbarrow at your nearby Canadian Tire store.
From game-playing footballs to inflatable and cushy. Whatever your preference, grab a football, bring your winning spirit and have some fun! Add further flair with some outdoor games that are fun for all ages. Whether it’s a family affair or an adult-only shindig, bag toss, ring toss and giant Jenga are all great additions to any tailgate.
Tip: Stop in at your local SportChek or Canadian Tire store for a wide selection of footballs. Best part, they are both less than 5 minutes away from University District!
Friendly Reminder: Always check stadium rules before personalizing your own most valuable tailgate essentials checklist. Check out the Calgary Stampeder’s Tailgating rules here and don’t miss the Grey Cup Outdoor Tailgate Party at McMahon Stadium ($35)!

Grilled sliders and hotdogs are always a crowd-pleaser and hearty addition to any football party, but who wants to have a boring old frankfurter on a bun? Go out of bounds and turn your hotdog into something special by wrapping it in bacon, or go the whole nine yards and stuff it with cheddar cheese too!

A sweet and smoky staple that has earned its place as a pre-game essential, pulled pork hoagies might just be the MVP of tailgating. Give this classic a twist by topping it with a spicy and crunchy slaw. Your guests will love you for it.

This is not your ordinary tailgate appetizer! If nachos and roll ups aren’t your jam, consider mac and cheese dippers at your party instead. Make a fresh batch of macaroni and cheese or use leftovers. Either way, they’ll become the number one draft pick among your guests!

Go beyond the standard fare of chips and salsa! Spice things up with Elizabeth’s go-to Buffalo Bean Dip that will keep your guests coming back for more. The tangy, spicy flavour of the hot pepper sauce is intercepted by the creamy bean and cheese base and is a serious tastebud touchdown. Go ahead, drop down and double up on this dip!
Ingredients
Step 1: Combine all ingredients in a 4-quart slow cooker
In a 4-quart slow cooker, combine the cream cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, white kidney or navy beans, buffalo-style hot pepper sauce and blue cheese dressing. Stir generously to distribute the cream cheese evenly.
Tip: Opt for a reduced fat cream cheese to lighten the dip for the health-conscious!
Step 2: Cover and cook
Turn the slow cooker on, cover and set it on low for 4 hours or until cheese is melted and the dip is hot and bubbling. If you are short on time, cook the dip on high for 2 hours, stirring one to two times to prevent the cheese from burning.
Step 3: Stir and serve
Serve warm with chips or veggies. If desired, sprinkle with green onion.
Tip: For an added zing, forgo standard tortilla chips and opt for lime flavoured tortilla chips. They will keep you satisfied through halftime!

Next to make waves is University District’s future dining destination, Freshii. Set to open in 2020, residents and neighbours in our corner of the city will be able to enjoy quick, nutritious meals that are easy on the waistline and equally delicious.
We caught up with Zora Boyal, co-owner of U/D’s upcoming culinary gem, to learn the skinny about its health-conscious, clean-eating culture. The Toronto-based company has been whipping up made-to-order, wholesome meals for customers across Canada since 2005.

Is there anything more fall than pumpkin? The colour and flavour pretty much signify the arrival of autumn. The good news is that you can embrace all that the season has to offer without compromising on your health. Forgo pumpkin lattes, sweet pies and rich, savoury soups and choose heart-healthy alternatives that will tease your taste buds and satisfy your cravings for comfort food this fall.
Instead of a pumpkin spice latte, opt for an Energii Bite Smoothie, a customer favourite at Freshii. Made with chocolate chips, peanut butter, coconut, frozen yogurt and ice, this delightfully rich smoothie is packed full of nutrients to help boost your body and health. Pick one up or make your own at home!
This Thanksgiving season, instead of indulging in a slice of pumpkin pie, treat yourself to some pumpkin energy bites made with rolled oats, cranberries, pumpkin seeds, peanut butter and honey. They are delicious and will help you get through that turkey coma.
Cooler nights call for a big bowl of comfort. In place of a steaming bowl of creamy spicy pumpkin soup, make a big pot of homemade chili. Healthy cooking doesn’t mean you have to become a gourmet chef or sacrifice flavour. Just a few small and very simple basic cooking techniques and tips can make you eat better, feel better and make taste a kitchen priority when preparing nutritious, satisfying meals. Let’s dive in!
From cabbage, parsnips and asparagus to green beans, tomatoes, thinly sliced cuts of meat and more. Overcooking ingredients can destroy flavour and nutrients making them dry and bland. Avoid this common pitfall by blanching your ingredients (yes even meats!) for two and a half minutes and cooling them in ice water. Not only will it take away the bitterness, it will keep the flavour, colour, texture and overall appeal of those luscious and delectable ingredients. Overcooked food will be a thing of the past.
Lift and balance flavour with red, green and yellow peppers of all varieties — sweet, hot and dried. Or, add a dash of hot pepper sauce, but remember a small amount goes a long way.
Whether you’re cooking stuffed peppers, preparing a pepper appetizer for guests or simply adding them to a stir-fry, creating meals with peppers is one of the best ways to add colour, crunch, taste and sweetness to dishes without adding salt or fat. Pep away!
The autumn harvest includes a variety of crisp fruits and root vegetables – perfect for creating comfort meals to enjoy with friends and family as the weather begins to cool. From persimmons and beets to pomegranates, brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes. Autumn brings seasonal produce picks that will keep things fresh and boost your health. Rich in vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants, fiber and water, it’s hard to resist the gorgeous nutritional profile of fruits and vegetables.
Shop locally to get the freshest in-season produce in your area. The Bearspaw or Hillhurst Sunnyside Farmers’ Markets are great places to start and they are just a hop, skip and jump away from University District!
Tip: Some vegetables and fruits — such as mushrooms, tomatoes, chilies, cherries, and cranberries — have a more intense zest when dried than when fresh. Add them to a meal when you want a burst of flavour!
Ah the season of gathering is upon us. Whether hosting Thanksgiving dinner or planning an intimate autumnal gathering with friends, pair your meal with some delightful, cool and whimsical beverages that are fresh and oh-so-refreshing. Great for easy and quick lunches or a side salad with dinner. Enjoy it as is or jazz up meal time with a toasted pita and large dollop of hummus! However you choose to dress it, this salad will be much-loved by family and guests this Thanksgiving season. Let’s get cooking!
Ingredients
Step 1: Prepare the couscous
In a medium-sized saucepan, bring the vegetable stock to a boil and stir in the couscous. Once simmering, remove the pan from the heat, cover and let stand for five (5) minutes. Lightly fluff your couscous with a fork, allowing it to cool for at least 10 minutes.
Tip: Swap out your couscous with quinoa for a gluten-free version. Simply adjust the cooking time and follow steps two through four!
Step 2: Combine ingredients and toss
In a large salad bowl, combine your cooled couscous and lightly toss it with the drained garbanzo beans and chopped vegetables – cucumber, red pepper and green onions.
Tip: For a touch of sweetness, toss in some cranberries and/or raisins.
Step 3: Mix salad dressing and add to couscous mixture
In a small bowl whisk together the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, Dijon mustard, lemon zest and black pepper. Add the vinaigrette and lemon dressing to the couscous mixture and mix well.
Step 4: Garnish, serve and enjoy
For a boost in flavour and added zing, garnish your salad with a dash of lemon pepper. Sprinkle on top and serve!
Tip: Use a light hand when adding seasonings so as not to overpower the other flavours. Consider toasting some almonds in a dry pan for another layer of texture. Delish!

Whether you’re starting small or making big changes in your quest for healthy living, we hope these expert tips and delicious inspiration help you prepare hearty and healthy meals for you and your family this fall season and all throughout the year!

Layer up! Some call it sweater weather. We call fall, blanket weather. Not only can throws and blankets make living and bedrooms look chic with their rich colours, textures and patterns, you can display them in stylish new ways to add charm to your space. For example, instead of simply placing a blanket over your sofa, layer a tartan throw as part of your table cloth or roll a few into a trendy wicker basket for easy access on movie night. Take it a step further by hanging them on rungs on a wooden ladder leaned against the wall.
Don’t be afraid to mix pattern and texture. Autumn is all about layers – whether it’s your wardrobe or your home. Have fun with it!
If summer is about everything light and airy, fall is about warmth and character. Add visual intrigue to your space with natural woods like something as simple and forgotten as the cutting board. Make it a statement decor piece for your kitchen by using it as a backdrop for a pot of spoons or as a tray for your salt and pepper. Bring in some wicker baskets or wood vases and layer them into your living room decor. The all-natural yet ever so stylish feel of wood gives off the perfect autumn charm without going too rustic.
Offset the natural woods in your space with tobacco and forest green hues. They are fall’s answer to any colour quandary. Swap out some of your toss cushions or add one or two to your collection to capture the crisp but comfy feel of the season. Green is timeless, so dive in! For an added touch, bring the colours of your front yard inside with just a few orange mums.
There’s something very satisfying about taking a breath and relaxing for just a little while with a hot, steaming pot of tea. It’s welcome at any time of day, especially during Calgary’s cooler autumn season. Learn the art of brewing tea from the connoisseurs themselves, Analog Coffee, with their step-by-steep guide.
Go mad for plaid! Turn your entryway into a happy fall haven with a tartan pillow. Just one cushion makes all the difference in an autumnal vignette. Take it one step further and give your reading or kitchen nook a major fall vibe by adding a splash of plaid and some subtle stripes using blanket wrapped baskets, rugs and even a checker designed coffee mug. As Calgary’s temps start to drop, expect this to be the most popular hangout spot of the season!
Before your Thanksgiving dinner party guests tuck in to a hearty feast, give them the full seasonal treatment with all-plaid table trimmings. Bring out the plaid napkins and tablecloths with overlapping layers of mismatched tartan accessories, like a runner or get creative and make your own plaid ribbon wrapped napkin holders.
Tip: Stop in at Homesense for the perfect Thanksgiving chequered table cloth. Buy sets for only $19.99 and the best part, it’s just minutes from University District.
Just as you trade a cotton suit for wool, your house can also use an autumn wardrobe swap. Consider fur throws or toss cushions!
Switch your linen pillows with mohair or fur. Drape a white faux fur over the back of dining chairs, on top of a dining bench or even at the end of a bed. Best part, when Christmas season comes around use the fur throw as your tree skirt, giving that extra bit of lux to your space. If the palette works, use fall foliage as colour inspiration.
There’s no better way to spend brisk fall nights than at home with a steaming cup of chai latte and book in hand. Seeking your next literary adventure? To help, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best bookstores in our neck of the woods, as well as a book list of must-reads courtesy of our very own U/D team. Let’s take a look here!
Pumpkin pies and cinnamon apple cider are all welcome aromatic ways to make your home feel full of autumn inspiration, but you don’t have to wait for a trip to the pumpkin patch at Butterfield Acres or nearest apple orchard to enjoy fall’s intoxicating aromas. Enhance your space with warm, inspiring fall-scented candles like sage and walnut, pumpkin chai and nutmeg to instantly transport your home into autumn mode.
From petite pillars ideal for your windowsill, on top of a book or nightstand, to 3-wick investment pieces for your Thanksgiving dining table display or in your bathroom next to a vase of handpicked pine cones. These autumnal mainstays will add a pop of colour – like rich greens, lush oranges and deep velvets – to your room decor and make you feel like you’re frolicking through leaves in a warm, snug sweater.
Fuel an afternoon of do-it-yourself Fall wreath making with a hearty, healthy sandwich. Thanks to Press’d Sandwich Shop, a future University District retailer, it’s never been easier. Be prepared to have your taste buds teased and senses heightened with its twist on a classic BLT and its number one seller – the California Club! Get the recipe here.
New season, new wreath! It’s time to swap out those soft summery florals with something a little more cozy, festive and cold weather-friendly. Whether it’s Thanksgiving guests or trick-or-treaters you’re greeting this season, you can always count on a wreath to breathe some seasonal life into your space and give your home some serious curb appeal.
Begin with a nod to nature with this simple and cheery DIY fall wreath activity. Perfect for a weeknight or weekend activity with friends, kids or grandkids. Let’s get decked out for fall!
Supplies Needed
Step 1: Wrap your metal wreath
Start by wrapping your burlap around your metal wreath frame. Use a dab of hot glue to secure the starting end and overlap the edges as you make your way around the form. Trim your burlap and use another dab of hot glue to secure the end.
Tip: Pick up a frame and even your burlap from a nearby Michaels, Walmart or hobby shop.
Step 2: Add your preferred fall inspired accessories
Now it’s time to add embellishments. Celebrate autumn’s gorgeous palette with varying shades of orange, red, yellow, green, purple and black. Go traditional by adding some small linen flowers and twigs picked from your own backyard for added texture, or for something more rustic, consider pine cones, dried foliage, harvest berries and corn husks. Whether you choose to go simple, natural, traditional or luxurious, the possibilities are endless!
Tip: Small or large, secure every trimming or adornment with a drop of hot glue to keep them in place.
Step 3: Don’t forget the ribbon!
Finish off your wreath with a simple ribbon. From mesh and lace to satin, grosgrain, organza and velvet there’s no shortage of options to complete your DIY project. Gently bunch your ribbon, tie a bow or add some dramatic flair with some ribbon streamers. Glue into place and voila, you’re done!
Tip: For all you plaid lovers out there, add a simple plaid ribbon for a hint more of that Fall feel.
As we begin to leave summer behind and ease into autumn, there’s no better time to get inspired with these fall decorating ideas. From living rooms to family rooms, kitchens, dining rooms and entryways, there’s plenty of inspiration to help get you fall ready. Enjoy!
