From ceiling height to natural light, closing dates to interest rates, home hunting presents one critical decision after the next!
Whether you are a new-home newbie or a veteran real estate dealmaker with an eye on a future purchase, University District shines a light on townhomes and whether this style of residence may be worth closer consideration!

Decidedly urban, townhomes were historically second homes of the well-to-do in England who lived primarily in country estates and came into the city periodically for ball season or other occasions. They loved the lock-and-leave convenience, the distinction of a private entry as well as paramount proximity to amenities and social events.
Striking a balance between a more central location and uncompromising size, a townhouse has been a centuries-old ideal choice for homeseekers. The same appeal holds true to this day here in Calgary.
At University District, current offers include the final remaining spacious and elegant brownstones of Noble by Truman situated on Kovitz Lane. Bright and sleek for those who adore room-to-roam at home with more than 2,057 square feet of living space including 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and rooftop decks. Learn more about the available options here or visit the Discovery Centre today.

Curious about the inspiration for NOBLE? We sat down with its development team to learn about its landmark contribution to U/D. Read all about it here.
New on the University District townhome scene is Brookfield’s launch of sparkling three-storey show homes in the Ivy: two-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom Olivine and the two- or three-bedroom 2.5 bathroom Reseda models. Both feature double attached garages!

With the release of these stylish contemporary townhouse show suites, U/D and its builder partners at Brookfield are especially excited to weigh in on what is prompting the popularity of this style of home for Calgarians. All these reasons and more led Brookfield to introduce the IVY townhomes, prominently placed at the entry to our growing community.
Stacey Reive, Community Manager with The Ivy at University District answered some key questions about its latest townhome offer and the lure of the townhome lifestyle!
Ivy by Brookfield Residential
“Let’s explore the advantages of modern townhouse living,” says Stacey. “Despite all of the options and choices homebuyers face at University District and throughout Calgary, for many people the benefits of buying a townhome make the decision more streamlined and straightforward. Here are our top-five reasons-why.”
Once the pros and cons of selling a traditional family home have been weighed and measured, discussed and determined, townhome living may be the preferred choice for people seeking to simplify life. If the leap to condo life is too great, a townhome has the feel of a single family house – with an open concept, spacious home with larger square footage to more traditional walk-up entrances — but the convenience of lower maintenance, like a condo! The Ivy offers three distinct plans including three-bedrooms with up to 1,816 square feet of living space.
One appealing factor that stands out for many townhome dwellers is the fact that they share fewer walls with a townhome than they do in a more traditional condo. We hear it said that there is a sense of more privacy and personal space with a neighbour on one side or another versus above and below or across a hall. If you are lucky enough to purchase a highly sought after end home you are only sharing one wall.
Ivy by Brookfield Residential
More like a traditional detached home, with a townhouse, you and your guests can enjoy a private entrance to come and go. This added threshold space is another opportunity to personalize – from character door mats to seasonal planters. Similarly, our Ivy townhomes give that private and handy perk of an attached garage. Again, an opportunity to expand and personalize your living area. Maybe neon gas signs are your thing? Racks, hooks and baskets to store sporty stuff? Or hang a boxing bag in the corner for workouts! Lastly, having your own personal entrance and parking garage increases your peace of mind.
Cut time or cut grass? Which would you rather? With lower maintenance living than a traditional detached home, you can free up precious hours and days in summer to enjoy other pursuits. With the University District’s plans for exceptional greenspace, you are unlikely to miss that feeling of being at one with nature without a garden plot to tend or worry about. The lack of lawn also frees you up to travel and not have to schedule or pay for someone to manage your garden if venturing away. If you do have a green thumb or love to garden The Ivy offers its home owners a community garden located in the central courtyard to grow your very own organic veggies and herbs!
The lure of living in a community like University District over traditional suburban neighbourhoods or downtown condos is the townhome option (with all the aforementioned benefits) PLUS the perks of a location packed with shopping, medical, dining, recreational and other community draws. All of these are available with the selection of roomy, relaxed lifestyles townhomes offer. The choices at University District will surprise you and help with the decision to downsize or upsize, depending on your life situation and goals!
Live like you are on vacation. U/D places major emphasis on everything located within walking distance, boasting amazing walkability with a walk score of 90! The 3rd community in all of Canada to be designated LEED-ND Platinum, residents can look forward to exploring many parks and greenspaces!

Surrounded by health and education facilities the value we as a growing community place on wellness fits in perfectly. From the most basic benefits of simple stretches to the challenge of an uphill bike, we believe the foundation of a vibrant, healthy community is where residents are active, happy and engaged.
With that in mind, University District linked up with our valued builder partner and the experts at The Brenda Strafford Foundation for tips on functional fitness exercises and nutrition to help live life with increased energy and strength as we age.
More than a buzzword, functional fitness is about preparing your body for real-life movements and activities. Whether you squat down to pick something off the floor or reach for the cereal box on a high shelf, this type of exercise helps improve quality of life by mimicking everyday actions. And it’s a great way to have some fun!
No matter your age, it’s never too late to get fit. These simple recommendations and movements from Occupational Therapist Peter Fraser will help you capture the vim, vigour and vitality of your youth. But before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s find out about the new inclusive park coming to The Brenda Strafford Foundation’s Cambridge Manor in U/D.

Energize your mood and improve your overall sense of well-being by adding more movement and activity to your life with these easy, everyday exercises. Best part, they can be done from the comfort of your own home!
From getting out of bed, to sitting down in a chair for every day meals, your lower body muscles are responsible for almost every move you make. It’s only fair then to give them a little TLC with a simple sit-to-stand exercise, which helps improve balance and mobility and strengthens lower body muscles.
The move: Begin by sitting down in a chair with armrests. Keeping the back straight and slightly helping yourself with your hands, stand up. Then, sit down while keeping the weight evenly distributed on both legs.

Building upper body strength especially in your arms, shoulders and chest is a gradual process that can take months or years. The efforts however pay off in improved posture and the ability to complete everyday tasks with more ease. The best part, no equipment needed! As long as you’ve got a wall, you can do this exercise.
The move: Stand an arm’s length in front of a wall and place the palms of your hands flat on the wall at the height and width of your shoulders. Keep your feet planted and back straight as you slowly bend your elbows and bring your body towards the wall. Gently push yourself back to your starting position. Remember, the closer you are to the wall, the easier the exercise will be.

Has the time come when climbing up and down stairs is a hassle and shovelling your way through another winter is already giving you the chills? It may be time to downsize – or “right-size” – your lifestyle! To help point you in the right direction, take a look at this guide of what to consider when in search of new digs in an age-friendly community.
Time to march! Leg movements such as marching in one spot, is a great balance exercise that helps increase walking endurance. It also improves your ability to pick up objects off lower surfaces, like your pooches leash or grandkids toys.
The move: Standing straight, lift your right knee as high as you can. Hold for 5-10 seconds. Return to the starting position and repeat with the other side. Life and lower your legs 20 times. To steady your balance, place the tips of your fingers on an object.

Whether you sit at a desk most of the day, spend any time driving in the car or even play stimulating memory games on your tablet, chances are your upper back is paying the price. These everyday activities can contribute to muscle tightness and weakness. But with the right movement you can ease back paint, increase the mobility in the shoulders and help combat poor posture. Lets make some snow angels!
The move: Begin by standing up with your back against a nice, roomy wall space. Elbows start at a 90-degree bend, with the elbows parallel to the ground. Keep your heels as close to the wall as possible, while making sure that your hips and entire spine are pressed into the wall. Once positioned right, gently pull your shoulder blades toward each other and the back of your hands down into the wall. Without letting your shoulders roll forward, slowly slide your arms on the wall to raise them overhead – as high as possible with the good posture and without pain. Remember do not let your shoulders shrug toward your ears.

Repetitions: 10
One of the best ways to feel good is to give to others. From playing music and helping with special celebrations, to reading and spending time with seniors, there are plenty of ways to give generously with The Brenda Strafford Foundation. Check out their volunteer opportunities here.
Giving your body the nutrients it needs to help you stay active and independent is important, especially as you age. But it should also be about enjoying fresh, tasty food and wholesome ingredients. Eating well doesn’t have to be complicated, especially with these simple nutrition recommendations. Let’s take a look!
Creating a balanced meal is where it’s at. Ensure every meal has a lean source of protein, a healthy fat and quality carbs, such as whole grains which are rich in nutrients and fiber.
Don’t forget about those fruits and veggies. Break the apple and banana rut and go for colour-rich pickings like berries and melons and choose antioxidant rich veggies like broccoli and kale.
Pro-tip: Don’t enjoy cooking or lack the energy? Opt for pre-made high quality soups, pre-cut fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, or pre-cooked proteins. If budget allows, sign up for a grocery or meal delivery service like the one that will be offered at U/D’s Save-on-Foods, which will open its doors to residents and neighbours this summer. This can make food preparation much easier!
Need a bit of a nutrition boost? Protein and green powders, fiber powders, and fish oil can be useful in providing your body with the nutrients it needs.
Going au natural? Kudos to you! But if you are struggling to digest your meal focus on soft, well-cooked, or pureed/blended foods such as scrambled eggs, poached fish, mashed vegetables, avocado, yogurt, smoothies and soups, which are easier to digest.
Pro-tip: Before trying any new supplement, always seek your doctor’s opinion to determine what’s right for you.
Break routine and introduce new foods or new ways of eating the same food to your diet. It can be as simple as replacing canned fruit with freshly sliced ones, or substituting poached eggs with scrambled eggs using this delightful, balanced and tasty recipe from Chef Mauro Martina, founder of OEB Breakfast Co. Eating well is about making meals more enjoyable. Be adventurous and try something new!
Pro-tip: Dessert? Yes please! Smart nutrition does not mean we have to forgo the sweet treasures we often look forward to. Whether it’s a small bowl of your favourite gelato or that sugar cookie you’ve been eyeing for days, enjoy a small treat a couple times of week if desired. It makes life a little more delicious!
For anyone who wants to feel healthier and more energetic, staying active is key. Always start small. Some is better than none and more is better than some. We hope these suggestions leave you feeling energized and help get you moving!
University District’s Noteworthy in the Northwest series focuses on dynamic and compelling individuals and organizations from around Calgary’s Northwest, offering insights across a range of topics and each contributing to describing the spirit, opportunities, and legacy of the Northwest.
We sat down with Chef Mauro Martina, founder and CEO of OEB Breakfast Co. and long time Northwest Calgary resident, to speak about raising a family in this corner of the city and the addition of OEB to NW Calgary’s food scene, which is expected to open its door later this year.
Growing up in Italy, I was drawn to the culinary world at an early age, finding inspiration in my nona’s passion for cooking, rich ingredients and bold, fresh flavours. After training in Italy and Germany, I embarked on a worldwide culinary adventure, which led me to several Michelin Star restaurants and eventually dropping anchor in Calgary.
At a young age I had the honour of working alongside some of the best chefs in the industry. But, it was my love for great flavours and desire to elevate breakfast dishes into the most exciting culinary experience of the day that led to the creation of OEB.
Gone are the days where diners of breakfast joints are seen as a greasy spoon. OEB has created a special and uplifting breakfast experience where patrons can explore and indulge in the finest ingredients. There are few places out there that serve sturgeon caviar, scallops and truffles!
OEB Breakfast Co. isn’t the only food purveyor to open its doors to the public this year. Click here to see which other beloved foodie brands are set to raise the bar with their culinary splendour and service as part of University District’s retail line up.
Since moving to Calgary, the Northwest has always been a beacon of excitement.
With its dynamic, vibrant atmosphere, diverse population and unmistakable charm, to its inner-city vibe without the hustle and bustle of downtown life, family-friendly feel and flourishing culinary scene, what’s not to love?
After moving from Kensington to the trendy community of Parkdale in 2008, I became engrossed by the Northwest. As a father and family man, I wanted my children to grow up in a community that was reflective of its surroundings.
From its array of parks and amenities to the welcome mix of residents living in this corner of the city, I’m proud to call the Northwest home and wanted to be part of it the best way I knew how – a new breakfast hot spot inspired by locally and sustainably-sourced ingredients!
Characterised as minimalist, experimental, innovative and quirky, OEB’s design is known for pushing the boundaries while creating interiors that are as functional as they are creative.
When we designed our award-winning downtown location we looked at using wood to showcase unique designs that embodied practical whimsy. With large egg and waffle shaped booths that diners could actually sit in – the first of its kind anywhere – we brought fully functional eccentric art concepts into real life.
Our 10th year anniversary store in University District will be nothing short of a showstopper! With its open kitchen, grand bar, industrial chic design concept and of course that OEB flair, our U/D location will revel in the opulence of steel sculptures covering thirty per cent of our ceiling and seating area. We are shaping steel to do magical things! Of course, patrons can immerse themselves in not only good food and conversation, but in a vibe that makes the humdrum everyday world feel far, far away.
Chef Mauro Martina is elevating standard breakfast faire with local ingredients and unbridled creativity. Learn the skinny about OEB’s chef-driven concept, along with Mauro’s tips and recipe recommendation for a heartier morning meal to start your day off right. Take a look here!
Visitors can expect some grand opening specials, as well as several new dishes as part of our fall menu. While patrons can still indulge in the classic favourites and delicious products OEB is known for, these inventive creations will be the highlight of your day!
In the process of perfecting these dishes (yes, we are still testing so no specifics yet!) our focus remains on local ingredients and crafting a dining experience that is more than just about eating great food. We’re trying to create a direct connection with everything we bring in. From butchers and egg farms to bakeries, OEB is very unique in its offerings, and knowing where your food comes from and who grew it, is essential to our approach.
Stay tuned because there’s plenty more to this OEB story!
There’s always a spark of hope that comes with every New Year. Changes are welcomed, new ideas are formed and resolutions are made. There’s no better time to hit refresh!

We know getting organized at home can be easier vowed than done. While it can be overwhelming and daunting to know where to even begin corralling stacks of paper or organizing the overflowing pots and pans drawer, there is a starting point!
Begin by creating an inventory of every space in your home. Break it down by room, take photos and notes and identify categories for each space. For example, for your kitchen that can include cupboards, drawers, pantry and the junk drawer – you know, that one filled with old pens, phone cords, batteries and all other things without a home! This will allow you to take smaller and more manageable steps to getting organized.
Product Suggestion: There are many mobile app options that can simplify home organization, but Encircle is among the top when it comes to free home inventory apps. Simple to use, Encircle gives people the ability to upload unlimited photos and notes about each room and item in your home and even allows for easy creation and exports of reports. No wonder its University District approved!
Nip common mess magnets – like the living room or hall closet – in the bud with a room-by-room plan. Work your way slowly through the entire house and identify clutter hot spots, such as coffee and console tables that serve as “catch-all” places for items. Then create a list of specific actionable ways to get organized in each space. For example:
Pro Tip: Invest in a free app that lets you share tasks, set reminders and plan projects from your phone, tablet or computer! Instead of leaving your partner a to-do list for cleaning the kitchen or a chore list for the kids to tidy the living room, send them a digital nudge with Wunderlist.
As you resolve to be more organized and conquer common tendencies of excess, tap into local certified KonMari consultant Helen Youn’s tips for how to declutter your home for more joy. Click here for her recommendations.
You know your home better than anyone else. Put that use and fall in love with it again by creating a vision roadmap! Look to magazines and online resources for examples of what you envision each space in your home to be. Remember to think about your daily routine to create a more thoughtful and functional visual layout for each room.
Product Suggestion: All hail Pinterest! An online haven for crafty types who aspire to have a picture-worthy home, Pinterest is a dream resource for anyone seeking creative, fresh and colourful ideas to plan, organize and complete any home project. With millions of photos to sort through, this mood-boarding app is guaranteed to result in a slew of selections, all of which can be organized into individual boards for each room in your home.
Pro Tip: As you peruse Pinterest and its catalogue of exciting and stylish storage ideas, you may be tempted to go shop. Avoid buying any storage containers until you’ve purged. The goal is to reduce your junk – not find new ways to house it!
Keep your home from becoming a disorganized mess by investing in items that give everything a place, turning rooms into tidy, stylized, functional spaces. Transform the inside of a cabinet door into an undercover organization station with some chalkboard vinyl to keep important information such as a WiFi password, important cell-phone numbers, and even coupons. Or, buy a vertical file system to store and sort mail and bills, baskets for throws and tubs for toys.
From budget-friendly to splurge-worthy, items like magazine holders, slide-out cookware storage, closet organizers, a system to control cords, and functional drawers to story everyday items in will make life easier in the long run. You may have to spend some money up front, but it will be completely worth it. Remember, extra storage is never a bad thing! To keep your home organization spending in check, click here for some budget conscious tips from the pros at Scotiabank to help you save for any special project or occasion.
Pro Tip: Avoid stacking your shelves with user manuals for every appliance in your home. Go digital with Centriq! A virtual user’s manual to the home, Centriq is a free online app that stores appliance instruction guides and warranties in one place. It even goes so far as sending reminders for product upkeep!
For all your home organization needs, accessories and tools, stop in at Homesense or Canadian Tire located just minutes from University District!
Organizing your home isn’t meant to be a race. It will take time and effort. Before you get discouraged, remember to start small. Whether it’s the silverware drawer in the dining room, the mess of dishes that linger behind closed cabinets or the overcrowded bathroom shelves, it’s okay to tackle one space at a time. After tidying the dreaded junk drawer or disastrous linen closet, move on to the next space on your list and use that energy to fuel your motivation to maintain the organization train.
Product Suggestion: Use a label maker. Taking extra time to colour-code and label everything can keep organizational systems in place. From chalkboard and magnetic to adhesive vinyl and printed labels, you can get as fancy and creative as you want. Go nuts for labels!
Pro Tip: Don’t hesitate to walk away when you begin to feel overwhelmed (and you will!). Go for a short walk and come back when you are feeling refreshed and ready to tackle more. Don’t feel like going at it alone? Make your home organization project a fun evening with friends. Grab a bottle of wine, some appetizers and invite your pals over to help!
Getting organized can be a lofty goal for the year but thanks to these home organization tips from the pros, it is an attainable one. Whether it’s organizing the office desk or tidying up the shoe closet, we hope these suggestions will help you handle everything life throws your way and frees up more time in your day for what’s really important – family, friends and of course, yourself! If you would like more tips on home organization or are interested in the services The Space Reclaimers provide, including its online course – Reclaim your Space,, reach out to them here.
While the holiday flurry and bustle is only just in the rear view, many of us may already be casting glances at the calendar, eyeing the next vacation. If you are thinking ahead to your future weekend or week-long holiday, keep it simple and look no further than just beyond your front door!
Don’t let the neighbours’ talk of Maui luaus or Vegas jackpots sway you! The saying that “there is no place like home for the holidays” rings true right here in NW Calgary, now and well into the new year. This is especially true when we live in and around University District where exploration yields rewards in spades, in hearts and in aces of a different kind.
Let’s explore the idea of a NW Calgary staycation!
It’s no secret that Calgary is emerging as a tourism destination with visitors flocking to enjoy the stunning scenery and noteworthy landmarks. Whether you taxi or transit, walk or wheel, our city and quadrant is a trove of unique experiences, fun shopping adventures, delicious culinary treats and sights.
Once you commit to keep your vacay days for exploration near home, the next step is to choose where to stay. We suggest booking a room for a night, weekend or longer!
Visitors to NW Calgary stay in style. You can too! One of the keys to a great staycation is to pack an overnighter or suitcase and roll up into a local hotel.
Known as the gateway to the Rockies and for our great sports options and proximity to the city centre, the NW is home to oodles of charming motels and inns, including Hotel Alma & Seasonal Residence at the University of Calgary and ALoft. For a guide to great stays, the U/D way click here!
On the horizon, did you know the award winning Canadian boutique hotelier Germain Hotels is opening its second Alt hotel in Calgary right here in University District in 2021?
Before we dive into our favourite hidden NW gems to see, do, try and buy, let’s hear from Germain Hotel’s Director of Development Hugo Germain about Alt Hotels’ plans for U/D, especially with construction already under way.

Formal news has yet to be released as plans develop for University District’s upcoming Alt Hotel. But we sat down with the man behind the popular brand to let us in on some of what’s to come and why they chose to open in NW Calgary.
”Germain Hotels is very excited to work on its first-ever hotel in such close proximity to a University campus,” says Hugo. “From day one, when the opportunity came across our desk to open in U/D, we saw a unique chance to create something different. The dynamism around a university campus is the perfect setting. Our intent is to create a space that will encourage the community to make it its own, not just our guests. A stimulating environment for living, sharing, working and having fun.”
Inspired by its surroundings, Alt Hotel will integrate concepts of sustainability and efficiency, while maintaining its modern design guidelines.

“We like to work with our architects and designers to create something that fits well in the community around us. We also like to work with local artists to integrate images of Calgary as seen on past projects. You should expect the same type of integration in University District.”
“The interesting aspect of the location is also its proximity to the hospitals and sports facilities. To that extent, we also adapted our design and room mix to fit the needs of longer stay guests but also create an environment that will help those people to unwind as some will be dealing with difficult times.”
From large bookshelves and dark wood panelling to a high-tech lobby, shared workspaces and a stimulating environment, Alt Hotel and its designers at Lemay Michaud Architecture Design have come up with a space in which visitors would clearly have the look and feel of a university vibe.
“We created two spaces on each side of the lobby to host a full-service restaurant and a café that will be owned and run by local talent and whose concept will also be inspired by the University of Calgary.”

Our top must-try is reminiscent of a trip to Austria to indulge in the cultural tradition of “kafee and kuchen” at the Wiener Schnitzel Haus. Its house-made desserts follow traditional European craftsmanship. Try the apfel strudel, served with vanilla sauce or Heisse Liebe (“hot love”) which is chocolate ice cream topped with hot berries in schnapps. Their Einspänner coffee is named for the famous single horse drawn carriages in Vienna and topped with thick cream to keep the coffee warm on cold days out and about.
Also in NW, tucked away in Market Mall, look for the unique purple triangular boxes at Purdy’s Chocolate to discover delicious little hazelnut filled hedgehogs. These are a Canadian original coveted by visitors as a true taste of Canadian creativity and cuteness in chocolate.

For more chocolate and yummy uncommon edibles, a trip to the British Pantry is like a trip across the Atlantic! This NW Calgary institution has been open since 1997 with an incredible range of British confectionery. Visit this delightful shop for our favorites like Curly-Wurlys, Mini-Moos (vegan and organic), Walnut Whips, Twirls and Starbars.

Make time for tea! Our top-pick spot for tea is Chatime. Not your ordinary cuppa, we suggest their classic Brown Sugar Roasted Milk Tea. Enjoy roasted tea leaves with the added sweetness of rich brown sugar. If you have yet to try bubble tea, give it a go this staycation! For a touch of added intrigues and sweetness toppings include aloe vera, coconut jelly, grass jelly or pearls. Be adventurous and don’t be shy to ask about their most popular concoctions and options.

Living near the University is a boon for creativity, engineering, arts, wellness and more. One way you can tap into the excitement and progress that the people who live and work here are stirring up. Lights, camera and action! Set the tone for a super cinematic evening by dressing up your space with props. From string lights nestled in boughs or garland that add a bit of twinkle and sparkle to your viewing space and holiday banners that sum up the season to a mini chalkboard that notes the evening’s showing.
While you can always use candles for a night in, turn your living room into a theater with a lighted pathway back to the pantry for snacks (thank you LED rope lights!) or use well-lit marquee signs among the spread of goodies to create a festive spotlight fitting for a very merry bash.
Fun tip: Movie nights are a fun way to connect as a family. Build on those connections with some fun pre-film activities. Keep your kids or grandkids busy with crafts like making “Admit One” tickets and paper snack cones for the big night. What a fun way to literally usher in the most loved seasonal tradition of movie night!
Pull out the sleeping bags, some extra fluffy pillows and fleece blankets. It’s movie night! Cozy up the viewing area by placing baskets of throws around the room and deck out the sofa with plush, comfy faux fur pillows. Maybe even pop a small tent or gather all the sheets, blankets and cushions you can and invite your kids or grandkids to build the perfect pillow fort! They’ll love to cuddle up in their newly constructed hideaway – but don’t be surprised if you hear some Zzz’s before the credits roll.

Amp up your cinematic experience and make it feel extra full of Christmas magic by dressing up in festive outfits. Put on those silly holiday tees and graphic leggings or rock those matching onesies and ugly sweaters. Be creative, have fun and don’t forget a cozy pair of season-themed socks!
Fun tip: From hats, sweaters and full-on Santa suits, fewer things are cuter than a fur baby in a holiday get-up. Kick things up a notch and be the chef of movie night with some tasty and more creative cinema-style snacks. Bake up some apple and banana chips; whip up a batch of sweet and spicy nuts and layer up some nachos. Time to get snacking! Read on for our festive suggestion!

Buzz, buzz and beep, beep – no more! Once the fun begins, hand over the phones and enjoy the flick. Avoid checking in on incoming emails and the latest updates on social media by making film night a no-phone zone or “unplugged party”. Simply have your guests put their phone in a drawer in another room or as friends and family arrive, have them place their phone in a “drop off” basket at the door.
Fun tip: Plan for an intermission. It’s a great time to shake the sillies out, take a bathroom break if you have little ones, maybe a chance to refill the snack bar and of course take a few minutes for the host to post that festive movie night selfie on Instagram for all to enjoy. Just remember to share these memorable moments with us by tagging @UDistrictYYC!

Ingredients
*Recipe courtesy of Taste of Home
Step 1: Get popping!
In an air popper, prepare 14 cups of corn. Place in a large bowl coated with cooking spray and set aside.
Step 2: Bring ingredients together
Butter the sides of a small heavy saucepan. Add the brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, molasses, ginger, cinnamon and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Allow the mixture to boil without stirring for 5 minutes.
Step 3: Pour gingerbread caramel mixture over popcorn
Remove the mixture from the heat. Stir in the baking soda (mixture will foam) and vanilla and quickly pour over your popped corn. Mix well.
Step 4: Bake, cool and eat!
Transfer the coated corn to two greased 15 x 10 x 1 inch-baking pans. Bake the coated popcorn at 250°F for one hour, stirring every 10 minutes. Remove from pans and place on waxed paper to cool. Once cooled, eat away!
We hope these movie night essentials help make your evening a blockbuster hit. Just remember, it all starts with good company, tasty snacks and a charming holiday flick. Get settled on the couch (or in your fort!), turn off the lights, and enjoy. Happy Holidays everyone!
