Spring is here, and the new season brings a fresh crop of exciting book launches to add to our reading list. Even better than squirreling into a good new read is discovering how books can spark and fuel healthy chats with family, friends, and fellow book lovers afterward!
It’s no surprise then that community through clubs has created cherished connections between literary fans around the world. From fostering lifelong friendships to expanding your understanding of what literature has to offer, book clubs can be a wonderful way to stay connected with a diverse community of readers and open yourself to new reads.
With a little more time to enjoy a good book, University District is sharing some of our city’s book clubs and a must-read list from our team of book lovers. Whether you’re looking for a suspenseful thriller, another sweeping slice of historical fiction, or are in the mood for an epic love story, you’re sure to find something on our list.
Time to move from the toasty shelter of our homes to our sun-soaked patios and nearby parks now that warmer days have arrived! Settle in, grab your reading glasses and get ready to devour your next literary find.

We’re sharing some local book clubs that are sure to please the bookworm in you. Let’s read on!
Whether it’s learning a new skill, reading classic and contemporary novels, diving into an autobiography or branching into fresh genres, A Novel Idea book club is the place to be!
A monthly club open to all, this local easy-going and light-hearted group aims to spark conversations about books and authors in fun, fresh ways.
Here’s how it works: Every month, A Novel Idea selects a book for participants to read, reflect upon and review. Members read along at their own pace and those who choose to can meet for insightful conversation.
With monthly clubs that touch every literary genre possible and virtual clubs on the horizon, it’s no wonder U/D residents, neighbours and friends rave about Calgary Public Library (CPL) book clubs. From parent-and-child to teen to adult and senior clubs, CPL members can share in the pleasures of reading with fellow bookworms.
While CPL book clubs and programs — such as its Book Club in a Bag — are temporarily suspended, there are plenty of other programs to enjoy including its Storytime at Home!
Here’s how it works: Join Calgary librarians and even Mayor Naheed Nenshi as they read books and sing rhymes and songs. Follow along with these virtual storytimes any time, anywhere. It’s your very own family book club! Click here to get watching.
No small talk here, folks! At 114 years young, Calgary Women’s Literary Club is one of the city’s longest running book clubs where the focus is strictly on… books. Started in 1906, the club serves as a meeting place for women with a love for prose.
Each year the club chooses a different literary theme and during a handful of sessions, members present papers on authors and books relating to the theme chosen. This year’s theme is cultural awareness in literature!
Calgary Women’s Literary Club isn’t for the faint of heart. If you’re seeking a women’s-only club that’s light and fun, consider Calgary Women’s Social Book Club! Join the group’s virtual June discussion on Into The Water by Paul Hawkins! Simply visit the club’s online meet up page here and request to join.
Here’s how it works: Members of Calgary Women’s Literary Club meet Tuesday afternoons in October and November, and again in March and April at Calgary’s Memorial Park Library where they mingle over refreshments and listen to presentations. All members are expected to present a paper every two years on an author whose work relates to the year’s literary theme. The membership fee is $40.00/year.

“No homework. No pressure!” That’s YYCSBC Silent Book Club’s motto. With no assigned reading, members of this club can focus on taking time out of their busy schedules to simply relax and enjoy a good book. Bring on the coffee and power down your phone to enjoy what it’s all about… literature!
Here’s how it works: Members meet twice a month in person at some of Calgary’s trendiest cafes and coffee shops, like local favourite and future U/D retailer Analog Coffee. For the first half-hour, clubbers mingle, order drinks and reflect on their readings, which is followed by a quiet reading hour. For the last half-hour, members can keep reading or socialize with fellow literary lovers. With U/D’s retail main street taking shape this year, hopefully we’ll even see members enjoying a meet-up in the neighbourhood!
Calgary’s longest-established bookstore, Owl’s Nest Books has been recommending the best novels to newbies and bookworms for more than 40 years. No matter your age or tastes, this popular destination for books has you covered, cover to cover! With monthly literary and mystery clubs for adults and two kids’ clubs, it’s no surprise it’s a fan favourite with book lovers!
Here’s how it works: Owl’s Nest hosts three in-house book clubs where members meet at the beloved bookstore on the designated day of each month at a scheduled time. Clubs run from September to June, are free to join and are open to new members at any time, with drop-in always welcome!
Calling fans of all things literary! While not a book club, Wordfest is a not-for-profit arts organization that produces one of Canada’s largest international literary festivals that features some of today’s most compelling writers, thinkers and dreamers.
With year-round programming including a monthly book club, Wordfest connects lovers of prose together in a 7-day reader’s festival held every April and October. From workshops and panel discussions to in-school presentations and readings. It’s a reader’s delight beloved by word nerds and book lovers across the city (and the country!).
Don’t miss Wordfest’s upcoming free virtual Happy Hour event with author Mark O’Connell on May 28. RSVP here.
Here’s how it works: Once a month, engaged book lovers come together to mingle and discuss a book of choice at the end of each Wordfest book club meeting. However, the beloved book club has gone digital! For upcoming online club meetings, visit its website here.

Picking up the fresh set of keys to a new home is a joyous milestone in life, whether you’re renting or buying. And there are a number of reasons to decide to rent. Maybe it has to do with your stage of life: Are you on your own for the first time? A downsizing senior? Or moving with your partner into your ‘first place together’? Or, maybe you need the flexibility that a rental apartment provides. And there is always the perk of easy, maintenance-free living!
Rental living affords huge possibilities for residents who aren’t in the market to buy at this time. Whatever your reason for renting, the options at U/D are plentiful. And we have a few suggestions to get you to that point with confidence so you’re moving with your best foot forward!
At U/D, we’re excited to welcome our own amenity-rich, purpose-built rental building called Aria by builder partner Gracorp Properties which is now leasing. Aria features 288-units with one, two- and three-bedroom rentals.
Did you know that it’s also pet-friendly with a fenced-in dog run and wash area?
Have a look here at what life could be like at Aria!
As residents begin to move into Aria in Fall 2020, we know there’s a process and commitment that comes with deciding on the right rental apartment for you at just the right time.
It can be overwhelming, like any move to a new home. Questions swirl in your head as you think: what kind of rental unit suits my needs now? Is it long-term? How many bedrooms do I need, and how much space? Because that determines affordability and looking at a budget is always a good idea. From the amenities nearby, to ground-level to top-floor, and all of the necessities in between, there are many aspects to consider.
But to help make the experience of renting a little simpler we’ve put together some tricks and tips from the trade to be rent-savvy!
Let’s get down to the brass tacks of renting. Understanding how to approach the rental market can result in a smoother, more cost-efficient and organized journey as you make the big move. First, take a moment to think about what home means to you. Imagine what that looks like, whether it’s the surrounding community and amenities, to cost of living, and the interior design.
Make a list of what those must-haves are, but also identify what things you can compromise on.
Next, think about your location. Does it matter? If you’ve lived in Calgary for a while or are a lifelong Calgarian, chances are you probably prefer a certain quadrant of the city to live in. Start your rental home hunt there. Everyone has a personal motivation, whether it be staying close to family, creature comforts or beloved local hotspots. Or maybe now is the time to mix it up! Switch schools, live closer to work, or be closer to the mountains! It could be time to cue a change!
There are many reasons to consider the established and growing Northwest, especially University District: proximity to the mountains, the prevalence of parks and handy urban trails, and being close to the University of Calgary! Have a look at our great Northwest guide that will let you shop, play, eat and explore our area of the city.
Tip: Knowing the communities you would want to live in can help determine your budget and what’s available. Here are some considerations when looking at your top choices for a community:
Make a list and order the importance. Then, spend a day or two in and around the community and see if it feels like home. Have a look to see what’s around like cafes, restaurants, schools, parks and shops! Step into the shoes of a local and think, ‘Is this for me?’
Enter the renting process with a budget in mind to help determine your price range with confidence based on your income. Also, factor costs like utilities, insurance and security deposits.
Tip: A financial plan is key so you can see what the big picture will look like once you move into your home. Apply the 50/30/20 budgeting guideline: allocate 50% to your needs, 30% to your wants, and 20% to your savings. Visit a bank and work with a financial advisor to learn what makes sense for your needs and with your income as budgeting is different for everyone.
If you’re looking to rent at U/D, find the bank around the corner to help with all of your banking needs! Scotiabank will be moving into the community as part of our retail offering, and it has specialty services and savings plans that might suit your needs. Thinking of owning a home down the road? Take a look at their rent versus mortgage calculator!
Tip: After you find your home and move in, get organized so you can really enjoy the benefits of a fresh start rather than managing clutter. Need some suggestions on what to do? Have a look at these fresh tips from local company The Space Reclaimers!
Once you’ve narrowed down your preferred location and budget, the true search begins and what we think is one of the most fun parts of the search! Research which rental properties are available and start scheduling walk-throughs to see the homes first-hand. Take some time to walk around the building to get a better sense of place. It’s okay to trust your instinct when falling in love with a home! The same goes for the home layout, wear-and-tear, privacy, security, parking, and storage.
Tip: Create a list of questions that you have for the landlord. Remember: there are no silly questions! Here is a list to start: May I paint the walls? Are there move-in, move-out policies to be aware? Will the apartment be professionally cleaned before possession? Just a few things to consider for peace of mind!
You’re at the point where you’ve seen your options and that last one, maybe at Aria in University District, is definitely the clear winner! So what are your next steps? It’s time to take a look at the application process.
Tip: Applications can be filled out while you do your onsite tour, or the landlord may ask you to fill it out electronically. Be prepared to have this information handy to save time and show that you’re a qualified option as a tenant:
The moment that you get the call – you’re the best tenant option! Time to celebrate, so you start dreaming about how to make your place a true place to call home. Here are a few reminders before getting caught up with the excitement. Take time to read and understand the lease and terms, from noise and visitor policies, to parking and buzzer set ups. It’s best if there aren’t any surprises before you make that move. Lastly, renter’s insurance is a must-have, not only because it’s required but it’s best to protect yourself in the event something happens out of your control.
Renting with Pets? Sealed the deal and maybe you’re ready to move in with a fur baby as part of the household? At U/D, pets are always top-of-mind and we have some tips and suggestions for quirky ways to keep your space primed for you and your furry.
Planning and budgeting doesn’t stop at renting your new home; there are costs involved with moving and naturally, the fun part of decorating! Decide on what you need to make your home feel comfortable and plan each room in phases so you’re not making large purchases all at once. Find your style and start building your vision! Have a look at local stores, especially in NW Calgary, for some inspiration and decor options that are truly unique. When in doubt, browse show suites for some inspiration. Whether it’s on-point design trends or the Pantone Colour of the Year, chances are local interior designers have already picked it up and applied it to their creations.
Have a look at what our builder partner Gracorp Properties has planned for the Aria interior design.

University District’s Noteworthy in the Northwest series focuses on dynamic and compelling individuals and organizations from around Calgary’s Northwest, offering insights across a range of topics and each contributing to describing the spirit, opportunities, and legacy of the Northwest.
We sat down with Dr. Aaliya Sabir, general pediatrician at neighbouring Alberta Children’s Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, to learn more about her life as a native Northwest Calgarian, and how she chose to enter into pediatrics. As a frontline worker, we are excited to profile her, and also chat about the importance of self-care, her entrepreneurial spirit, and hidden and well-known gems to be enjoyed in communities around University District!
We love that many of our upcoming retailers have a soft spot for University District and NW Calgary, including the owners of Denim & Smith, Curious Hair Salon, and Dr. Jan Jaffer of TREC Dental. Learn more about our favourite neighbourhood dentist here
Though I was born in Iran, my family, long-term residents of Calgary, moved back to the city when I was an infant, so I feel like I was born and raised here. Growing up in Varsity, I’ve only ever known NW Calgary; it’s my comfort zone.
The area is tied to many fond childhood memories: Market Mall as the go-to place during my adolescence, the pathways nearby for family walks, and growing up with friends down the street. Though many probably have similar experiences of their upbringing, there’s always personal reminders that make each memory just that more special.
Many people in this city seem to have a preference of which quadrant to live in, because there’s familiarity and concept of what home and community means. I’ve never strayed far from Varsity with each move to a new home because it’s easy to visit family, commute less for work, and enjoy the surrounding neighbourhoods that I know.
NW has such a beautiful spirit because of its diversity. When describing what makes a community, there has always been a connection between people here, with the energy and understanding of each other from different cultural backgrounds.
Also being close to the University of Calgary (UCalgary), there’s almost a nurturing, academic aspect. Many people have great pride to study or have studied at the university. Since I graduated with my bachelor’s degree from UCalgary, and now as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, I feel like I’m investing back into my academic community.
Education took me away from Calgary for a while for my medical degree at the University of Alberta and then residency in the United States, but life came back full circle to NW Calgary when I finished my final year of residency here again.
Specializing in general pediatrics felt right because it opens my heart to help sick children and their families. Part of my belief is that you have to give back to everyone as much as you can. I’ve been part of the team at Alberta Children’s Hospital for 12 years now and it’s been such an enriching journey.
With a high number of patients, with high complexities and acuities, it can be difficult to step back and take a breather. Frontline workers experience so many challenges throughout the day, especially during this difficult time.
You need to check in with yourself mentally to not feel overwhelmed. It’s also a matter of being mindful of our energy levels: if we’re taking a break to eat, and giving our bodies a break from the thousands of steps a day. I find that these small reminders are really important for our physical and mental well-being.
Coming home and winding down is also important for that personal well-being and health because we need to practice self-care to be our best for our patients. Sometimes the experience of the workday, whether positive or negative, can make a lasting impact, and enjoying some me-time is a good way of relaxing and reflecting.
Whether it’s indulging in favourite foods or dedicating a night to TV show binges, I think we’re all in a place where it’s okay to unwind and have an opportunity to re-evaluate, reset and look at the positives in life.
Part of my self-care has actually been self-discovery as an entrepreneur and to explore my creative side. Calgary has such an entrepreneurial spirit, and it’s a great time in my life where I can make an even greater impact.
For a creative outlet, which can be considered my hobby, I’ve launched my own clothing business called Admiral Clothing & Accessories Inc, with the premise to support overall wellness. I found inspiration from my own personal need to be comfortable in athletic wear. The material needed to be breathable and ethically-made which I see as a unique combination in the marketplace.
I started the company motivated by passion, to find a solution. After all, I can’t be the only one experiencing this.
Through the process of design, I’ve realized that I wanted to limit the use of plastic in the clothing. This means finding an alternative to buttons and zippers. The result is an innovative fastener system I’ve invented and is in the process of being patented. The uses of the fastener system goes far beyond creating clothing; it’s an exciting experience and has helped me understand myself as an innovator. Currently, I’m finalizing the women’s line before launching.
I have also been working on the social innovation side where my mission statement is ‘to alleviate suffering and support wellness worldwide’. I have always felt in my heart that I was meant to help the world. Growing up and living in NW Calgary are important parts of that journey because of my experiences and the people who have had an impact in my life.
Long-term, I’d like to expand the business to explore global initiatives and social innovation, particularly to benefit others who are not as fortunate. Working at the Alberta Children’s Hospital has prepared me for this new creative venture, and it’s an opportunity to adapt and change for the better.
Did you know that local favourite OEB is coming to U/D? Have a look at our interview with Chef Mauro Martina, founder and CEO of OEB Breakfast Co. and longtime Northwest Calgary resident. See what we’re cooking up!
For me, time off is well spent at Edworthy Park! Just a short distance away from U/D and the Alberta Children’s Hospital, I love being next to the Bow River, surrounded by the natural environment. The landscape is unique to Calgary and seems to have a calming effect.
Better than that, Bowmont Park along 53rd Street NW (near Bowness and Montgomery) is nostalgic for me with the best family memories, just wandering along the boardwalk trail. It is one of the most scenic parks and I don’t think many Calgarians know about it.
This hidden gem is great because of the natural waterfall deep within the park, and a lookout to the Bow River Valley. With hiking trails and beautiful pathways around, it’s basically in our backyard! There are absolutely beautiful places in the NW to enjoy.

The utility of the community, where it’s easy for people to access some great local restaurants and businesses. Even for workers at the hospital, there’s a functionality that is needed because we’re in walking distance of the neighbourhood.
It’s been incredible to watch the community grow, changing the NW landscape and adding to the vibrancy of the area. What a difference from when I grew up to attending UCalgary, and now. I can’t wait to see the end result and how it all comes together.

Too hard, too crumbly, too dark, too flat! Mastering the perfect cookie is an art, but luckily University District is here to help. Whether you’re looking to perfect a classic biscuit, impress your friends at a baking exchange, or simply up your game in the kitchen, these handy cookie-centric tips and tricks will have you baking like a pro, no matter what recipe is followed.
Sometimes you just need a cookie – but not the kind you have to spend all day making.
Baking can be a bit intimidating for beginners but of all the desserts you can master, these bite-sized confections can be easiest and the most fun! If you’re a novice baker, try a basic recipe before working your way to complex confections.
Tip: Try these simple fudge crinkle cookies from U/D grocery retailer, Save-on-Foods. They are a practically fool-proof favourite. Master this batch and you will be warmed up for your complete cookie spread!
This is a baking must!
Don’t haphazardly measure ingredients and toss them in a bowl. Follow your recipe to a tee and measure sugar, flour and other mix-ins as carefully as possible. The slightest difference in measurement can throw off an entire recipe. Remember, baking is a precise art. Really, it makes a difference!
Tip: Who wants dense, flat cookies? No one! When baking, always use room temperature ingredients unless otherwise noted, especially if your recipe calls for creaming butter and sugar. If the butter is too cold it won’t cream properly. If it’s too hot, you’ll have a greasy mess on your hands and your biscuits won’t rise to that puffed-up perfection we all long for.
Need more space in your kitchen pantry for all your baking ingredients? Create a streamlined space for your food with some tips and tricks from the pros with The Space Reclaimers. Take a look here!
Whipping too much air into your dough can cause cookies to collapse during bake time, which means hard, tough biscuits. No one wants that! Overworking can happen with all types of cookie dough. A good rule of thumb is to stop mixing before you think you should and for best results, chill your dough once mixed.
Tip: Lining your pans isn’t just to help make clean up a breeze. It’s also a great way to ensure you’re getting the perfect batch! Instead of using non-stick sprays and butter to coat your baking sheets, opt for parchment paper or silicone baking mats. They give an extra little layer of insulation, helping your cookies from spreading too much and reducing those greasy puddles we are all too familiar with.
We know, we know, there’s nothing better than a cookie that’s fresh out of the oven. But giving your baked goodies a few extra minutes (one to two minutes should do!) on the pan will help them firm up before transferring to a cooling rack.
Psst! Remember to let biscuits cool completely before decorating or storing them.
Tip: Don’t rush a hot pan! Before starting on a second lot of cookies, always let baking sheets cool to room temperature.

These smashingly delicious, make-your-mouth-say-thank-you cookies have stood the test of time for a reason. Perfect for dunking into a glass of milk, let’s bake the best gingersnaps you will ever eat!

Step 1: Combine dry ingredients
In a large bowl, mix dry ingredients until well combined. This includes sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove.
Step 2: Mix wet ingredients
In a separate bowl, combine wet ingredients, which includes margarine, molasses and eggs. Using an electric beater, mix wet ingredients on a low speed, gradually adding the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Once well blended, chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
Step 3: Get rolling
Once chilled, roll dough into small balls and if desired, roll the dough balls in sugar. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet about 2” apart and bake for 8 to 12 minutes at 350 F.
Tip: For a chewy and oh so yummy texture, bake the cookies for 10 minutes, or 12 minutes for crunchy gingersnaps!

Is there a language you have always sought to become fluent in but never had the time, a hobby you wanted to explore, or maybe there’s a certification that you have wanted to earn to boost your resume?
We can’t think of a better time than the present to venture into the world of online learning. From one-hour live workshops and weekend courses to online degrees, there’s virtually something for everyone.
Online learning is a growing and exciting new way to learn about almost anything to improve your life – both personally and professionally. With that in mind, University District is here to help with some ready tips and eager suggestions to jumpstart your eLearning journey and help you stay engaged while at home.
Before we dig into the meat of it, let’s go over a few basic recommendations!
Are you thinking of dabbling in online learning? Check out these resources from University of Calgary to guide your elearning adventure.
Whether trying an online class for the first time or looking to increase your knowledge base and add to your skillset, these recommendations will set you up for success, allowing you to take full advantage of all eLearning has to offer. Let’s dive in!
Try it! Even if you are not absolutely certain online learning is for you, try it out but choose a course that interests you and make sure you have the time. Whether it’s photography, learning a new language or a class dedicated to effective time management. You need to have a genuine interest in the topic and enough time to devote to your studies. If you have neither, you won’t be motivated to finish the coursework. Instead, join a webinar or register for a half-day virtual workshop to see if you like it. You may be pleasantly surprised!
You don’t need to replicate your 4th grade classroom, but it’s important to have a comfortable and designated space to work. Think about lighting, ambiance, distractions, connectivity, and ergonomics. They all play a critical role in your online learning success.
Whether your workspace is in the kitchen table, your home office, or family living room. Experiment to discover what setting works for you, boosts productivity and prevents distractions. Wherever you choose, make sure Internet connectivity is good! No one wants to take a virtual class with a lagging connection.
Online studying means you provide the place to work, the computer, reliable Internet and any other items you might need. Depending on the course, you may need headphones to listen to audio presentations, a printer to make copies of documents, a specific software that may have a hefty license.
Whatever the case, be sure you have all the necessary equipment before you start the course. It will prevent those panic-driven moments and help set you up for success!
Learning at home while balancing family health and well-being can be a challenge. If you’re seeking ways to support kids learning at home while having fun: online and offline, University District has you covered. Look no further and click here!
Once a novelty, virtual classes are now widely popular and for good reason. Flexible schedules, work at your own pace (within the class syllabus, of course!), and possibly finish early. Online courses can be appealing and an incredible learning experience, but it’s not all fun and games. To help, University District is sharing some go-to tips to help you tackle your course and pass with flying colours.
To stay on track with your online studies, have a goal in mind. From reading Chapter 1 and 2 of your course book and completing the first assignment, to commenting on discussion boards every week. Setting a clear target can help you stay motivated, beat procrastination and serve as an excellent road map during your eLearning experience.
Tip: Whether it’s a fun activity with your kids, a sweet and salty confection or watching 30 minutes of cute animal videos on YouTube. Don’t forget to reward yourself when you make progress towards your goal.
Stay healthy! Our brains work to their fullest when our bodies are well. Grab your four-legged companion and take a leisurely stroll through University District’s urban dog park. Make a cup of tea, get in a few stretches, or skip rope for even one minute. Having regular relaxation time that involves exercise and fresh air can help you maintain balance, renew energy and revitalize you to continue studying with a clear mind.

Surrounded by scholars and students in a beautiful collegiate setting, as a neighbour to the University of Calgary, learning lives in the air! In sync with the community spirit of learning that U/D’s proximity to university inspires, let’s look at ways to support kids learning at home while having fun: online and offline, in new ways and tried-and-true ways.
Whether you are a brother, a mother, a grandpa or nanny, the task of teaching young members of the household falls to everyone. We each have different skills and smarts to impart on young minds. But how best to rise to the challenge of integrating learning in a fun, carefree and entertaining way at home?
Learning today is more entertainment-based than ever before. To truly engage with kids to teach as well as be entertained we need to stay current with technology, apps, games and tools. That said, there are tactile, traditional ways to play and learn that may surprise young ones!
Given there is a maze of content online and non-digital methods may seem dated and lack lustre, we will explore two paths to learning through entertainment and play: on screen and away!
Let’s look at modern ways to stay entertained at home and learn something new together using technology!
It’s easy to find content these days with the millions of apps, YouTube channels and Instagram stories designed as click-bait. They can consume hours of fruitless time.
Rather than exchanging stern looks and heavy sighs as parents and grandparents compete with the screen for a young person’s attention, there are ways to exchange laughs and learning and together-time through gadgets and well-chosen programming and activities.
Almost every parent has worried about limiting screen time and keeping their kids communicative, healthy and progressing in positive ways. Here is a handy guide to how much screen time is reasonable and recommended. UCalgary education expert Dr. Michele Jacobsen, PhD, has some advice about kids and technology, and how to know when it’s simply too much!
What’s more, there is the topic of being a good digital citizen to tackle. Positive digital citizenship is something that often gets left out of modern learning discussions in families. Google has an interactive game to play that delves into these topics — from staying safe and secure to handling cyber bullies. Click here to learn more in Google’s Interland!
Once you’ve had “the talk” about technology and time management, it’s time to prepare for optimal learning and fun in one!
Be flexible! They say timing is everything in life. In this day and age, it’s as true as ever. Rather than being rigid and sticking to specific times, experts suggest not making online learning time together too routine. It’s ok to be flexible to keep it fun, gauging the mood and the moment.
Be mobile! There’s also truth in the saying that location is everything. So take a look at use of space in your home for spontaneous, fun online learning together. Maybe you can pop onto the porch for some head-to-head, phone-to-phone Words With Friends? Or plug in the Playstation in the bedroom and learn to pilot a plane or put your foot down in a virtual Ferrari while eating popcorn in your PJs. Prop up a laptop on the kitchen counter and see how yeast comes to life for cinnamon rolls in a favourite recipe.
University of Calgary has another fun and free e-book for little foodies based on research conducted by its experts. This free ebook is designed to help parents and children navigate food marketing appeals, and to help families make decisions about the packaged food they buy. Each section contains information about the supporting research, things to think about, and things to try at home with kids. Use this to spark talk and enrich the experience of cooking together. Download it here.
Be a good team! Once healthy boundaries take shape, and you are in the right mindset for spontaneous and flexible learn-at-home fun with technology, define your roles. As parents and grandparents, we too can be learning along the way. Don’t be afraid to take cues from kids about what they find engaging and let them come to the table with ideas of their own. Kids know more than we may think about technology and the world of resources at our fingertips.
There are a host of electronic tools to try and to love for learning and fun. A simple computer is a gateway to a world of knowledge on the internet. You can also put cell phones and tablets to the same task, researching and engaging in curriculum-led surfing and study. Talk to your child’s teacher about current requirements and expectations to focus your online time.
Many local programs and fitness studios have shifted their classes online and in the spirit of the more the merrier, the whole family can engage and support learning from professional teachers. UCalgary offers some great advice and local resources here.
Beyond these basics, gaming devices like Playstation, Switch, XBox or even Karaoke Machines can be a source of entertainment and new skills.
Build-your-own or programmable devices like mini robots or electronic Lego can provide hours of all-ages fun. Virtual Reality headsets are becoming more affordable and can transport you and your family into faraway places for creative exploration.
Pre-computers, people have always learned through play! From military moves in the game of chess to hopscotch — which not only boosts balance, it helps with cognitive development too — and pick up sticks to fine tune hand-eye coordination…the options are endless!
Traditional gameplay that promotes collaboration and thinking may be a novel way for kids who are used to learning through technology.
Here is our top 5 list of old school activities for modern kids!
Clapping games, hand jives and skipping rope to silly songs provide fun old-school ways to improve memory, motor skills and appreciation for other cultures. Try to master a clapping game and then take it online to platforms like TikTok to tout your skills! Check out Google #handclapping for some ideas here.
From euchre to blackjack, card games are easy to learn and fun ways to practice math! Pull out the Monopoly board to learn about real estate or Clue to solve mysteries.
Keeping a surface clear or getting a felt roll up for a puzzle. Better yet, create your own art together — a drawing or photo portrait in artsy style — and create a custom puzzle of your own using services like Zazzle.
Estimating, measuring, following instructions and science are all part of kitchen life! Try experimenting with cookie dough!
Need a little cookie dough inspiration? Click here for recipe suggestions and baking tips to perfect the crispy, chewy and buttery goodness of this sweet confection!
Get active — mind and body! Test your memory skills by calling out shadow boxing combos to one another while working up a sweat. Theatrical games like charades or improv theatre a la Whose Line Is It Anyway? can challenge your creativity and problem solving skills.
Playing games — old school or new — can give you a much deeper understanding of how things work, test new skills and spark laughter and fun around the house!
Beaumie Kim, as associate professor at the UCalgary Werklund School of Education says all kinds of games—whether online or a good old fashioned board game—can teach creativity, problem-solving skills and enhance learning. “Depending on the situation, there are times that I prefer paper, but there are other times that I prefer technology,” Kim says. “It’s quite exciting that we have all these options and different ways of doing things.”
However we choose to play it, creating a memorable, engaging home learning environment and experience is what matters most.

Let’s face it – breaking the rules is fun. When it comes to your table, it’s actually, maybe a little bit brilliant.
Ditch the matching sets and create that wow-factor by mixing complementary colours and patterns, fashioning a whimsical, one-of-a-kind tablescape for all to enjoy.
Add visual intrigue and variety by combining and pairing different dinner plates, side plates and bowls! This not only brings interest to your table, it allows you to showcase a breadth of different ceramic styles.
Think outside the box: When it comes to creating eye-catching centrepieces, don’t settle for standard twigs, flowers or eggs in a vase. Instead, mix and match! Incorporate a fruit element to make your decorative centrepiece come to life. From sliced oranges to limes, layer them along the sides of your glass vase to create a breathtaking design element. Top it off with a fresh bouquet to add an even more welcoming aesthetic. We guarantee this pairing will delight all of your guests!
Chase away the winter blues with simple, elegant and wondrous botanical displays that capture the essence of the season in all of its glory. From roses and tulips to lilies and hydrangeas, bring sophistication to your table setting by using your favourite florals in new and fresh ways to make a super stylish statement.
Show off the prettiest spring flowers by filling the length of your table with florals that spell out your favourite phrase – Love, Spring, Family. This eye-catching approach is bound to have everyone swooning! Consider potted plants and pussy willow and branches as an equally spring-friendly alternative! Even consider using spring foliage to decorate your dessert to let it truly be the star of the show.
Think outside the box: Allergic to flowers? Dress your table with seasonal produce like pears, lemons and apples. They make for a fantastic alternative décor! Simply trail the fruit and/or vegetables across your dining table for a pared-down take on the season.
Want to learn how to make your own floral arrangement? Petals ‘N Blooms hosts floral workshops every April. Visit their website to sign up!
Put together the quintessential spring-inspired dining experience with your personal take on table linens. From exotic textiles, burlap and lace to repurposed swaths of fabrics and patterned designs, table linens provide an opportunity to express one’s taste and charm.
Get that vintage vibe look using lace materials and monogrammed linens. Opt for a cool, modern take by using a French blue tablecloth to highlight the cool undertones of classic silver. Neutral linens in oatmeal, tan and white are the perfect backdrop for interchanging, bold accessories and tableware. The options are endless!
Remember, getting different patterns and colours to play well together is kind of like rocking a bright lip – let one thing shine and keep everything else simple.
Think outside the box: If you love the outdoors, why not showcase your personality with wood accents? They’re on trend! From walnut stained flower boxes to wood chargers, add that extra touch of nature to your tablescape.
Did you know University District is next door to some of the best home interior shopping spots in NW Calgary? From Twisted Goods in Market Mall to Real Deals just down the street, get inspired with their guide here.
As the saying goes, “simplicity is the glory of expression.” What better way to impress your guests and exercise your self-expression than through a clean, crisp and artfully executed table setting?
Consider using fresh greenery and monochromatic candles with copper detailing. Or, have a few good pieces stand alone and shine including some family heirlooms. They make for great conversation starters and add intrigue and visual appeal to any dining setting.
Remember, keep accessories to a minimum both in quantity and design and steer clear of complicated and extravagant décor pieces that will clutter your table.
Think outside the box: A beautiful branch with no leaves makes a lovely minimalistic centrepiece. Make sure it’s the right size and mix in some natural white or ivory candles to give your dining setting a bit of that boho vibe that’s on trend this year. For a seasonal touch and burst of freshness, compliment your table decor with some apples and sprigs of rosemary.
Whether you’re hoping to transform your dining room into a welcoming, easy-to-use space, or need some tidying solutions before Easter guests arrive, these tips and tricks from the pros with Space Reclaimers can save you the time, money and stress that come with living in a den of disorder. There’s no better time than Spring to get organized!
Like any great design, layering elements is the key to an attractive table setting. When it comes to stacking up style, use assorted vase sizes and shapes, with the tallest piece being your focal point. The varying heights and textures add visual interest and depth and dimension to your arrangement.
For the artsy folks out there, put colourful hand-painted eggs in a lower wide bowl and mix in some taller textured vases giving your centrepiece a sense of elegance and maturity. Bring the feeling of nature indoors by layering a burlap runner in the center of your table, complemented with some bright floral napkins. Or fill apothecary jars with mini floral displays, layered with a simple white table runner and varying sizes of candles.
Think outside the box: Layer the unlikely combination of cabbage and flowers and impress your guests with a fun, springy arrangement. All it takes is five items! Get the step-by-step instructions via Southern Living here.
There’s no better way to set the scene for spring than with a festive tablescape. Whether it’s an average weeknight dinner with friends or a festive holiday feast, these stunning ideas for spring centrepieces will surprise and delight your guests all season long.
Step one
Choose a wide-mouth glass vase for your centrepiece and select one flower type such as tulips or hyacinths, where bulbs and roots are exposed. Ideally, stick to one colour of flower for your centrepiece.
Step two
Add approximately 1 inch of water to your base.
Step three
Add the flowers and ensure the roots and bulbs are spread nicely in the water. It’s the perfect way to show off flowers with unique, windy bulbs and roots!
Step one
Spray your mason jar(s) in a Spring pastel or metallic colour.
Step two
Tie a burlap ribbon around the neck of the mason jar.
Step three
Purchase neutral florals or by them fresh and place them in the mason jar vase. If buying fresh, remember to cut the stems and add some water to your mason jar for longer lasting displays.
Tip: For a statement centrepiece, make 5-8 mason jar arrangements and line them up in the center of your table. Best part, after your lunch or dinner party, these décor pieces can be used throughout your home. Place one next to your bedside table, on an end table, next to your sofa or use it to add a pop of colour in a bathroom!
When the first warm days of the year finally arrive and fresh blooms begin to blossom, there’s no better time to break out vases and crisp table linens and create a special place to share a meal with loved ones. We hope you will add a bit of spring to your decorating step with these fun and creative combinations of style and approaches to bringing personality to your dining setting!
This month recognized International Women’s Day.
As gender boundaries blur and equality for all becomes standard across all facets of work and life, this calendar highlight remains a time to celebrate progress led by women in real estate development, a traditionally male-skewed sector.
The occasion prompted us to reflect on the trail of successes that University District and the West Campus Development Trust (the Trust) team have blazed and to recognize some of the professional women behind the scenes who have been contributing to its success — from construction to graphic design, to administration and project management to marketing and communications and more.

+ Linda Dalgetty
+ Karen Leeds
+ Alison Taylor Love
+ Jessica Revington
These stalwart and strategic team players bring tremendous experience in their respective professions to daily work here at U/D. During the occasion of International Women’s Day and every day, we are proud of how we all rise to the challenge of building this exceptional community and pull together, in the same direction, for a common goal that is gaining national recognition, year over year.
No strangers to shiny hardware in the form of plaques, trophies and awards — thanks in part to the women working to further the Trust’s goals for University District — this community development is gaining impressive recognition that we can all take pride in. Success belongs to all stakeholders: the University of Calgary, community members, retailers and local organizations, builder partners, suppliers, crews and the Trust team.
Known as a truly people-first, sustainable urban community, the Trust has become the proud recipient of several important accolades for U/D including:
Most recently, the 2020 Canadian Homebuilders’ Associations’ National Awards for Housing Excellence has shortlisted the Trust’s University District for its Community Development Award, from more than 700 entries submitted by esteemed developers across the country!
At the executive table, since the public launch of University District, is Marketing and Communications Director Maureen Henderson. The communications professional has brought the vision for this community to the public in a host of creative ways that have led to these important awards locally, nationally and internationally.
With a passion for community building, Maureen’s approach to a vision and leading accomplishments are drawing recognition and attention from women in real estate. In fact, it’s what prompted fellow female leaders and founders of Women in Development (WIND), a professional networking group for women involved in the creative services of Calgary’s development and real estate sector, to host a tour and networking session in our mindfully made community in late 2019.
March 8 marked the return of International Women’s Day, and with it, a celebration of influential women. If you missed our 2019 feature on the leading women contributing to University District’s development, read it here and learn how these accomplished women are leading in their professions, building families and kicking through that glass ceiling.
On September 24, 2019, more than 30 members of WIND – both seasoned and curious – came together to explore University District and hear first-hand from Maureen about its impressive community vision, its thoughtful design, and its progress on residential and retail construction as well as amenity development.
“Being a University of Calgary alumni and having the opportunity to shape the fabric of our great city, with projects like University District is inspiring” says Henderson. “It’s my passion to bring a powerful vision to life. To give the benefit back to my alma mater, and build community on so many levels – it’s a privilege to be a leader with the Trust organization. It makes me a proud Calgarian”.
We believe it’s important to give members a tangible experience where they can see first hand what is happening in and around our city, notes the founders of WIND Susan Veres and Gisele Danis, who launched the networking group in 2018.
“As professionals driven by creativity, we want to showcase new ways of thinking and bold ideas in the development industry. That brought us to University District – a community like no other!” they chime together.
With an exciting story to share, Maureen led the members of WIND in a bus tour around the community to explore and experience the scale of this exciting urban development project making headlines for its innovative design.
“From its master plan and approach to placemaking, to its retail vision and public realm, it’s simply incredible,” adds Susan. “It’s something different… and something extraordinary!”
Following the tour, fellow real estate and development professionals were treated to a short presentation and networking session to learn about University District’s planning and sustainability strategy, overcoming challenges and more.
“We were all impressed by U/D’s approach to inclusivity,” Susan says.
“It’s a community built for everyone – for all ages and stages of life – and that’s what makes a community healthy and sustainable. It’s why University District was on our list of must-see developments in the city,”
2019 was the networking group’s first full year of programming. And it was a hit!
Let’s learn a bit more about WIND, but before we get into the nitty gritty of it, first let’s introduce you to the women behind it!
Susan worked as Senior Vice-President of Strategy and Business Development for Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) for nearly 11 years. She worked with notable local and national brands including Coca-Cola, Triple 5 Corporation/West Edmonton Mall, Canadian Olympic Committee, to name a few; eventually leading her to the real estate and land development industry and the co-creation of WIND.
Career advice?
Tenacity and persistence – nothing beats it! Look for opportunities that give you exposure to other areas of a business. It will increase your value and create new opportunities for growth. That can be a game changer!
Gisele is the other half of the duo behind WIND.
In her early career, she worked as a journalist for various publications, eventually embarking on a career path in marketing and communications with leading brands including Disney, Tourism Calgary, Canadian Tourism Commission and more recently, Brookfield Residential as the Vice President of Marketing and Communications.
Career advice?
Always remain inquisitive. Curiosity propels growth, makes work more fun and fuels passion. Don’t limit yourself. Find inspiration from other industries and departments. It’s the key to career success!
University District is taking shape with its first wave of retailers expected to open their doors later this year. Learn about our retail district and the beloved brands coming to our growing community here.
WIND is bringing together female professionals – both seasoned and junior – in the creative services field across the real estate and development industry together. We connected with Gisele and Susan to get a deeper look at this initiative, including how members of the real estate and development profession can get involved!
As former c-suite executives, we were both blessed with the opportunity to contribute to community building initiatives that changed the very fabric of our city.
Through our experience, we realized other professional associations existed, but we heard directly from young leaders that there was a gap. Engineers, urban planners and architects had access to a number of networking groups, but no one offered a group that focused directly on the real estate sector, specifically in the marketing, communications/creative services field.
Born was the idea for WIND! A safe space and support system where fellow female professionals could share their experience and challenges, bounce ideas with one another, tackle problems and cultivate their careers and capacity as leaders.
WIND plays a delicate balance in supporting women within the corporate environment without burdening their already-busy schedules.
WIND highlights different communities through its female leaders such as Maureen from WCDT and Mairi Serpas from Market Wines in NW Calgary who joined the U/D discussions to talk about her company’s involvement in the community’s retail Main Street.
From best practices, key learnings and industry trends, to lack of advancement opportunities, confidence factors and everything in between. We discuss it all!
Beyond this, members can reach out to c-suite level executives including Leslie Conway, Kim Obrien and others who have made available their time to mentor and inspire these brilliant young minds.
It’s easy! Reach out to us at susan@honeycombsolutions.ca.
We would love to welcome new members where women feel empowered to find solutions, primed to implement exciting new ideas, and driven to advance as high-impact, more inspiring leaders.
