Nature Meets Innovation in the Northwest
January 24, 2017
In with the old, and in with the new—University District is embracing innovation and growing into Calgary’s Northwest, alongside its grandest places.
Built on land that will remain fully owned by the University of Calgary, U/D as a community is revolutionary. Uniquely planned and mindfully made by the community and for the community, the concept is only one of the revolutions in living born here. This is a first for Calgary, but one that’s proven incredibly successful for communities such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford and UBC.
University District is bringing legacy and innovation together in equal parts.
Surrounded by historic neighbourhoods and encapsulated by uninterrupted nature—U/D grows as a beacon of new possibility, new life and new progressions—both socially and environmentally. With a celebration of natural surroundings at the forefront of its identity, U/D is a community committed to making living sustainable in all of its forms.
One measure of this is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED® ND), a rating system recognized as the international mark of excellence for green, environmentally friendly building in over 150 countries. The certification is one of the highest international ratings for sustainable neighbourhood design, and the Platinum Certification has been awarded to U/D, a first for Alberta, and the largest in Canada.
From repurposing natural materials from the region and recycling of storm water to the green spine that guides the 12 km of interwoven community pathways—ecological advancement and responsibility guide the voice and the hands of U/D.
Every new year paves the way for change, new growth and new adventures—and this year is looking especially promising for the city’s Northwest. To learn more about U/D’s commitment to sustainability, watch our video below.
