Community Care and Safety Checklist for Newcomers
May 24, 2021 by University District
Get your bearings at U/D with some quick tips and references!
As part of every new, warm welcome we extend here at U/D, we wanted to take a look at some things to consider when moving into a new community. Let’s take a look at our Safety and Community Care Checklist for newcomers.
● Submit “Change of Address” form to Canada Post and tell your friends… check!
● Pick up a handy fire extinguisher … check!
● Current and complete first aid kit…check!
These are just a few of the tips we have gathered for moving into your new home. Let’s explore other helpful and in some cases — vital — local services to help ensure a smooth transition.
Step One: Before the move.
● Contact a moving company.
Xtracare Movers is a highly rated, family-owned company located in NW Calgary offering professional moving services since 2008. They advise giving yourself two months’ lead time to ensure you are ready for the big day! They can step you through all the important details for packing and preparing your move.
Tip: Be sure to let your chosen building’s manager know your mover details and move-in plans in advance.
● Stay connected.
Contact internet, TV, and utility providers to cancel current service and ensure you are set up at U/D.
● Make health a priority.
Fill prescriptions for any medications you regularly use so there is no interruption to your healthcare schedule. Save-on-Foods University District has a wonderful pharmacy and health department. They can help refill your existing prescription simply when you complete an online form here! Did you know? Shoppers Drug Mart is also on its way to U/D?
● Other reminders include updating subscriptions; organizing a child- and/or pet minders for moving day, updating your driver’s license and car insurance.
Step Two: Moving day.
● Conduct the final walk-through of your new home.
Each of our builder partners offers transition support to ensure a smooth, celebratory move!
● Final order of business?
Have your first meal in your new home. Moving is a lot of work so you might not want to cook on your first night. Good news there are lots of places to right in U/D.
Tip: See who is here and who is coming at to our retail main street.
Step Three: Health and safety smarts.
● Make spare keys!
There is nothing more unnerving or frustrating than losing, looking for or forgetting keys. Check out MinuteKey a short drive from U/D.
● Care and support connections.
From Foothills Medical Centre to Alberta Children’s Hospital to handy dental offices in U/D like University District Dental, it’s a great idea to tap local medical and dental resources for regular check ups and ongoing personal care. Learn more about University District Dental on our blog.
● Put fitness first.
Soon-to-open OrangeTheory Fitness and YYC Cycle are two go-to fitness spots you will want on your radar. Find out more about nearby options at UCalgary Active Living on our blog too!
Step Four: Settle into the U/D groove.
● Visit the Discovery Centre
A great touchpoint for all things U/D is our Discovery Centre. Be sure to pop in from time to time to learn what is new and coming soon! Or visit us online here and bookmark this page for all the current information.
● Get settled.
This doesn’t mean settling for less! Grooming, grocery, banking, childcare and more resources are all close to University District and can bring peace of mind and the feeling of security we all value in a neighbourhood.
Tip: Be sure to wear reflective clothing or lights when jogging, walking or cycling around U/D. Safety first!
Step Five: Keep exploring!
● Health and safety extends to pets too.
A great local resource for your furry friends is Pet Planet. Learn more about them here!
● Go beyond!
On the skirts of U/D is a wonderful world of parks and promenades, cycle trails and more to explore.
● Stay safe.
When walking around U/D take note of the extra care and attention to the lighting. Did you know that U/D has taken special care to ensure its pathways are downlit for our safety as well as to keep darker skies for wildlife, too.
We wish you a smooth move, exciting transition and a lifetime of new discoveries here at U/D. We encourage you to check out this blog post by Calgary’s Everyday Tourist for a fresh perspective on U/D progress.
