Take-out is on-trend. Join us on a NW Calgary tasting tour.

Takeaway is here to stay. Dinner time has become take-out time for many of us. It’s a quick fun fix for same-old, same-old suppers. It’s a time-saver. And it offers a delicious way to support local business in and around University District in Northwest Calgary.

Did you know U/D’s first restaurant, Sesame, is officially open making now the time to celebrate local foodie finds? Sesame has inspired us to set out on a tasting tour of the great, affordable take-out dining options in and around NW Calgary.

Whether it’s Sesame delivery or a trip to Save-On-Foods, this self-guided foodie tour of U/D and the local area take-out scene is meant to be a handy tool and conversation starter!

Let’s dine in, U/D!

Putting the Deli in Delicious!

We may not think first about a trip to the grocery store for take-out. But the options at Save-On-Foods could surprise you. From family-sized lasagne with meat sauce to meatballs in Marinara, quick-ready meals and sides from the Save-On-Foods Kitchen are fresh, healthful and great value!

Pizza. Chinese. Austrian?! All the NW takeout go-tos!

Let’s look a little further around the neighbourhood for top-rated spots for take-out: Pizza, Chinese and even, Austrian food!

The crust! The cheese! The sauce! Nothing quite say sa great night-in like a big box of pizza or a stack of smaller boxes, each with personal sized individual flavours, since artichokes and anchovies may not be everyone’s fave toppings. However you slice it, old-school classic pizza pie brings fun and comfort in a box. We love NIck’s Steakhouse and Pizza — a NW YYC institution with takeaway and delivery — established in 1979 for its original owner’s mom’s homemade recipes. We also love Gus’s Pizza! Try Gus’s special with pepperoni, bacon, mushrooms, green peppers, olives, and shrimp!

Pair your pizza with beer, radlers, wine or canned cocktails from Market Wines!

TAKEOUT TIPS: Did you know Five Guys Burgers & Fries is coming to U/D?! Learn more about this top-rated quick-serve destination that has developed a loyal following throughout North America for its fresh and made-to-order approach to burgers and fries. Chinese every time! If you fancy Chinese food, we have a place for you! Did you know Hi-Ball Restaurant was established in 1966 as one of the earliest restaurants in Calgary serving Chinese cuisine? This family-owned and operated NW YYC business has been serving fans for more than 50 years. We also love the nearby South Silk Road Chinese Restaurant serving Yunnan cuisine for its spicy dishes where mushrooms take the stage along with edible flowers, ferns, algae and even insects are served for the adventuresome!

Mix it up! Thinking out of the usual take-out box? Us too! Let’s go for some Austrian fare. Ordering your gulash and Tiroler Schnitzel has never been easier from the Wiener-Schnitzel House, which is also offering set menus with three courses, easy to order as 1,2,3!

Classics are classics for a reason. And nothing whispers sweet romance more than quality steak and fresh seafood for many people! Your choice of baked, mashed or scalloped potatoes and steamed vegetables create balance.

ME, TOO! ME, TOO!

Don’t forget your furry friends on this day of love! Pet Planet on our retail main street has healthy treats (don’t worry – your pets won’t even know it’s good for them) and toys for your little buddies. They can join in with a special feast of their own – but maybe not at the table!

RAISE THAT GLASS. HOLD THAT GAZE.

Whether you’re keeping it alcohol-free or indulging in some wine, the perfect pairing for your dinner is a walk away!

Keep it simple or go all-out – it’s up to you!

Over at Market Wines, you can get help with pairing a bottle of wine with your chosen dinner. With hundreds of wines from around the world to choose from, staff are ready to help you make the perfect selection! There will definitely be a match made for you and your special someone!

“Don’t be afraid to get a little adventurous,” Shalini Sagoo, who manages marketing at the store, tells us. “The best part about wine is trying new things! Classic pairings are just a guideline. At the end of the day, pair what tastes good to you. If you’re ever in doubt, go for Rosé, or let us help pick you the perfect bottle!”

Looking for a pre- or post-dinner drink? You’re in good hands too. Try out a whiskey on the rocks to keep it easy, or get fancy with a colourful cocktail recipe you’ve been saving for a special occasion!

“If you’re craving something sweet after dinner there are a myriad of options to try. If you’re having something chocolate based, Port is a great choice,” Shalini says. “A Sauternes is delightful alongside a fruit tart or blue cheese – try Château Roumieu, it comes in full and half size bottles.”

“If lusciously sweet isn’t your style, a dram of wine barrel finished whisky is a pleasant finale to any evening.”

Having a dry night in? Save-On-Foods is home to sparking non-alcoholic wines, as well as many club sodas, specialty tonics and juices you can use to create the perfect mocktail recipe!

TIP: Check out local cocktail bitters company Black Cloud Bitters for inventive and delicious mocktails you can enjoy again and again!

FRESH FUN MEANS BEING FULL OF SURPRISES!

Celebrating at home doesn’t have to mean Netflix and nachos! Make the night a little more special by breaking up the routine and doing something a little extra.

First off, take a few minutes to set the tone for the evening with purposeful décor choices. If you’re usually a ‘dinner on the couch’ kind of household, pull out the tablecloth and set the dining table or island, dim the lights, let the candles work their lighting magic and turn on some soft jazz or Calgary’s own k.d. lang known for romantic favourites like Western Stars, Big Big Love and Hush Sweet Lover.

Choose some fragrant flowers for the table – red roses are another classic choice – and you’re ready to dine in style. Simple changes make all the difference between your everyday home and a special night in.

If you have yet to buy into the board game phenomenon, make tonight the night. Whether it’s a game of Twister, Trouble or Trivia, games are a fun option for couples or the whole family, and you can team up or battle it out with a little fun competition!

DID YOU KNOW? Calendar Club at Market Mall carries plenty of games to enjoy! No matter what you’re interested in, you’ll find hours of entertainment here.

Take it outside! Tired of being cooped up? Get out for a V-Day walk! Explore your own neighbourhood or head to Bowness Park and try your hand at the ice bikes and skating.

A FAMILY AFFAIR!

If you’ve got little ones at home, have them join in! There’s no rule that kids can’t celebrate V-Day with their family – include them in the planning and cooking, and pick out a family movie or game to play. Once they go to bed, the rest of the night is yours! Don’t forget to reach out to loved ones who are spending this time alone. Set up a Zoom call, FaceTime or Skype. And let them see the twinkle in your eye that they spark!

ALL LOVE.

No matter how you spend the day, it’s important to remember the true meaning of Valentine’s Day – love! Whether you celebrate with a significant other, family or yourself, have a safe, special and loving V-Day.

Q & A with Clinical Trial Nurse- Pediatric Neurosciences at Alberta Children’s Hospital

At University District, we like to recognize people who help form our warm, neighborhood character and who make our community tick. This month, we profile and applaud the efforts of local healthcare worker, Nilufer (Nilly) Espiritu.

Nilly is a nurse in the field of neurology at Alberta Children’s Hospital and a University District resident. Since last March, she has taken on secondary nursing roles as part of the province’s COVID- 19 response.

Hi Nilly, thank you for speaking with us. Can you please introduce yourself?

I’m Nilufer Espiritu, known by Nilly, a nurse at Alberta Children’s Hospital and a new resident of August at University District.

I have been at the hospital for three years now, working with kids with neuro-muscular and neurological conditions. Since March, I have also worked in COVID- 19 response roles. After moving from Turkey with my family when I was 10, I grew up in Dalhousie, before attending the University of Calgary where I lived in residence before starting my nursing career. I live with my partner Brian, who works at Foothills Creamery as a Quality Assurance Manager. We know that U/D and August welcome pets, so one of our goals in 2021 is to get a pet for ourselves!

Tell us more about your role at Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Nilly is a nurse in the field of neurology at Alberta Children’s Hospital and a University District resident. Since last March, she My role has many parts to it as I work in an outpatient setting and on research projects. My work is with children with various neurological conditions which involves, case management, assessment, administration, and bedside care.

Most of my patients are chronically ill throughout childhood so require continuous care for conditions like muscular dystrophy, spinal muscle atrophy, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. I work with these types of patients in both care and in research for clinical and patient care trials. Fortunately, science has improved so much, there are more and more solutions to problems which it is exciting to see play out.

What are the best and hardest parts of your job?

My favourite part of the job is direct patient care with kids throughout their health journey. Although I have some patients as young as five, most are between 10 and 15, which is an interesting age group to work with anyway. I can have fun with them, which is nice to be able to say when working in a medical role.

My patients still have regular kids’ problems like too much homework or being upset that they cannot go to a friend’s sleepover because Mommy said so. The kids grow to feel safe with me, and as the point of contact I get to know their families very well too.

The hardest part of the job is seeing kids in pain as it pulls on the heartstrings. As a nurse, one learns to cope with this over time, and it’s reassuring to know you are part of the help and support they need.

How did you decide on a career in Nursing?

When I was younger, I was the neighborhood babysitter, and knew I wanted to work with kids in some way, I thought perhaps as a teacher. I had been a sick kid myself suffering with chronic pain and migraines of unknown origin. I saw a lot of specialists at that time but remembered always liking my nurses more./

I then went to the University of Calgary, where I loved my anatomy and biology classes. One day at the gym, I saw an ad for assistants to help patients undergoing rehabilitation with their fitness, so I volunteered.

I realized I had a fascination with medicine, and so I transferred and took up the Pre-Nursing program. I then had a rotation in nursing school at the Tertiary Neuro Rehabilitation Unit at the Foothills Medical Centre. It was there that I moved up from being a student to a Registered Nurse.

What advice do you have for someone considering a career in nursing?

First, I would ask them what they do not like in a job, as in nursing there can be a lot of late shifts and night shifts that impact your lifestyle. If you are not prepared for that, nursing is not for you. It’s a job that brings a lot of joy and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes lifelong learning. It is highly flexible, as one can work in many different fields and it also offers independence and travel opportunities as Canadian trained nurses are respected and sought after internationally.

TIP: Learn more about the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary here.

In 2020, you took on secondary roles in response to the COVID- 19 pandemic, tell us about that?

When Covid first hit, it was all hands on deck. I had worked in flu clinics in the past and got co-deployed. Ever since March 11, I’ve worked in contact tracing following up with positive cases as part of Alberta COVID- 19 Exposure Response Team (ACERT). I also handle calls to Health Link, helping Albertans navigate this pandemic, by providing answers to questions that they have about Covid.

TIPS: For information, resources and supports on COVID- 19 in Alberta, visit here. For trusted health advice, call Health Link 24/7 at 811.

Like a lot of people, you had to get used to working from home part of the time, how has that been?

I had never worked from home previously as before Covid, it was unheard of for a nurse. However, it is now the norm a few days a week. I hadn’t thought about how much of my job involved human interaction, until it was taken away. As well as the patients I have worked with for years, I miss simple things like being able to eat lunch with my colleagues, as we now must keep 6 feet apart./

However, I have also learnt more about different health careers, because as part of ACERT, I am speaking to people all over Alberta on Zoom and Skype. I wouldn’t have known anything about school health teams in Medicine Hat or who makes up the outbreak team in places like Grand Prairie before this.

What impact has COVID- 19 had on you personally and your job at the Children’s Hospital?

It happened so fast that at the start I was overwhelmed and exhausted from overwork in multiple roles. I remember my skin was peeling from long hours wearing a mask. There was a lot of uncertainty and the public were understandably nervous, but as a nurse, one has built coping mechanisms and we had to adjust.  My only fear was that I would pass Covid to someone else that I was meant to protect. As time has gone on, I’ve grown accustomed to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), masks, goggles, shields, and feel safe in my job.

Although patients are in separate rooms, one now sees more patients in less time. Kids are good listeners and don’t question wearing their masks, there’s no push back. They are also quick to pick up on emotion and body language, so we try our best to not make them anxious.

All direct patient contact is traced, and non-essential appointments no longer take place in person but by phone or Zoom. The fact I live so close to work has also made working at the hospital safer for me as there’s no bus, train or car parking involved, just a leisurely walk.

TIP:  Visit Alberta Health Services COVID-19 Response Page for information and updates here.

Why did you choose to live at August?

That’s simple, three words: Close to Work.

I actually wasn’t even looking for a place! I was on my lunch break one day in 2018 when I saw an ad for Homes by Avi. Thinking it would be great to live closer to work, I made an inquiry and Cassandra reached out asking if I would like to come by their Discovery Cente to take a look at the first building they were promoting at that time. I loved what I saw, so much so that I even stayed with the colour scheme of the show home!/

From that very first call, I liked that Avi was not pushy, as I was cautious after hearing of some bad realtor experiences. If we needed a question answered, we knew they were there. We liked dealing with the builder directly and being able to access files online. It really was a stress-free first-time buying experience, smooth sailing!

We moved in on November 2 and although we haven’t been able to get to know our neighbours as much as we would like, we have run into each other at the elevator and during a fire drill and agreed one day when possible we will do coffee or have a wine night!

Tip: Show suites for quick posession 1 and 2 bedroom condos at August are now open, learn more  here.

What are your favorite things about living in the University District?

I’m very comfortable in North West Calgary, having lived in Dalhousie and in residence at UCalgary. However, before the new developments, I felt all the property around here was gone, so it wasn’t an option.

I’m now so happy I get to live in an area where I have history, but also a future.

I especially loved when the neighbourhood came together at 7pm each evening banging pots and pans in a show of thanks and unity for healthcare workers. It really cheered me up after long shifts.

Overall, I find people in the neighbourhood are kind and appreciative of frontline workers, whether it is hospital staff or the workers in the grocery store keeping shelves stocked. I love that the grocery store Save-On-Foods is across the street, and that facilities and amenities are so close, like gyms for keeping fit and places to meet friends for coffee, even a pet store which I think we really must visit!

THANK YOU U/D: We are so grateful to healthcare and all frontline professionals whose bravery, selfless work ethic and spirits have kept our community and city moving through this difficult time with honour and pride. Thank you! We will forever be in awe and a state of gratitude for Nilly, her peers and all they do!

Meaningful Decor Reflects Your Own Unique Life Story!

With a new calendar year comes a chance for us all to reflect on the past. Letting our minds cast back to good times can fill our hearts and minds with a warmth and joy that only we can each personally know.

That being said, special times, people and pleasures can be shared in and around your home to create a domestic space that is unlike any other, all year long!

Why not share your memories in creative ways that introduce visitors to who you are and can even serve to remind yourself of who and what matters most in life, every day?

Personalizing your home may be the top design and decor trend of 2021! But how can you decorate with memories and not fall into a trap where your home looks dated — or worse –cluttered and overwhelming?!

Memories Matter

Homes by Avi Manager of Show Home Selections and Presentation Julie Punter weighs in on the topic with some super suggestions for how to decorate your place with memories in style.

“Creating a space for memories in your home matters now more than ever,” she says. “People are realizing and coming to appreciate — crystal clear — what is most important in life. That includes what they want to surround themselves with at home.” She agrees that starting the new year by honouring what makes us unique and showing it off in our homes is an excellent next step —  after reassessing, decluttering, and reflecting on what is important.

“Memories can be more than just a box of things you want to keep in a closet or attic. There are lots of ways to display them in style.” So let’s kick off 2021 with some fun decor touches that bring your memories to life and make your space stand out like no other can. After all, University District is a unique Calgary community that fosters a sense of home, pride and personal style. Try a few of these tricks and projects!  When the time is right you can invite people to enjoy your home and celebrate positive memories with you, to generate happy vibes in creative ways.

Your Lair. Your Flair!

Home decorating expert and 19-year Avi design professional, Julie advocates for bringing photos to life in innovative ways. Here are her top five photo display tips for 2021:

1. A Gallery Wall That Has it All!

Display your photos? Absolutely. Rather than surfaces cluttered with faded pictures in umpteen styles of dust-gathering frames which can just be “too much,” pick the special ones and have them re-printed in black and white or sepia tones and arrange them on a feature wall like a gallery would. They won’t get tired this way!

2. Minimalism and Memory Books.

Book displays are always on trend for bringing personality and warmth, depth and character to your decor. Julie suggests taking this one step further by crafting photo books of your memories bound in the same color for a monochrome style statement. We promise you that these books won’t stay on the shelf for long — they are a wonderful way to remember and share your stories in style.

3. Shelf Life!

Finding a frame you love, an image that means a lot to you and displaying it on a shelf, is one step to bringing character and personality to your place. But Julie suggests taking this one step further by complementing the picture with other items — that relate or not — to offset the picture and layer on the charm.  Think about a starfish you picked up in Florida, a special polished river rock from Banff, or a hand-me-down Medalta vase from Grandma with a sprig of lilac or bunch of pussywillows.

TIP: “Granny-chic is a thing for 2021 and hopefully beyond!” says Julie. “Inherited treasures are to be coveted and displayed this year, not tucked away! Quilts to dishes, keys to antique curios, display what means something to you in a montage.”

Have you seen August at University District? Its 107 units pay homage to Calgary’s urban landscape with sophisticated architectural design and an expansive list amenities. One- and two-bed condos offer den options, private underground parking and stylish design. Plus, quick possession is possible! Check it out here!

All the Senses… Including a Sense of Style!

We have covered photos — and a sense of sight — but there is more. Let’s uncover ways to treat and enlighten all the other senses in and around home in ways inspired by memories of your travels, family milestones, pets or personal successes.

Sound

How about capturing and playing a collection of meaningful audio clips — baby’s first words, the soundtrack from your childhood musical theatre debut and favorite songs that spark happy memories — from your phone, cast onto a mobile speaker using Bluetooth. This innovative use of digital technology that can easily integrate into your home.

Taste

Food-related memories are the best! How about displaying favorite recipes written in calligraphy and framed or having a customized tray or dishware made that features a stand-by recipe so you can remember it everyday? Julie adds, “ I have seen recipes transferred onto wall canvases and mounted in kitchens for great nostalgic-but-modern effect.”

Touch

Tactile memories are no less impactful! We love the idea of raiding the closet of a special man in your life to repurpose cotton shirts into a bed or lap quilt. This homey touch may not shout “look at my memory” but it can evoke feelings from past hugs or special dates when they wore this or that. Another notion is to have a fun image of someone who you love to snuggle with printed on a blanket and pull it out when you miss them most or accent your patio chair with a throw that serves a double purpose — to keep you cozy and spark memories.

Smell

Maybe it’s a nostalgic brand — like funky-1970s LemonUp shampoo for the shower — or an old-school fragrant flower like freesia in a vintage vase or Hawaiian-honeymoon inspired coconut room spray that evokes familiar, fond memories. Whatever sparks your notions of the past, don’t neglect scent as a way of enjoying those moments by bringing them to life once again at home.

We have oodles of ideas for staying organized and sorting through your things to find the true treasures. Let’s get busy!

Repurpose with Purpose!

One of our favourite ways to hold on to items in the “maybe” pile when decluttering your home is to find creative ways to salvage memories and flex your artistic side at the same time. Here are three fun eco-happy ideas for decorating with memories in mind!

1. Fits Your Home to a Tee!
Have a favorite few from your old t-shirt collection? How about crafting a colourful braided rug? Check this out!

2. Mug Shot!
Too torn to donate that odd mug you loved from your first corporate job or from mom’s old china pile? Turn it into a candle! All you need is some liquid wax, a wick and scented oil (if you’d like a scented candle).

3. Fancy a Good Read?
Grandma’s passed-down brooch need not hide in a box. Add a splash of panache to your bookshelf displays by simply securing them to a piece of ribbon that matches your decor palette. Be reminded of those days grandma dressed up with pride, every time you reach for a read!

4. Container Yourself!
Julie from Avi loves the idea of bringing collections out of the closet and into special containers — like beautiful bowls filled with items that harken memories — and displaying them. Or storing keepsakes in stylish boxes that stay accessible rather than in a locker or under the bed. If memorable things are contained, they are handy and can look great as a part of your decor.

5. Put it in Print!
Create a teatowel to display that features a copy of a handwritten favorite recipe — gingerbread, cocktails, you, name it. Companies like https://www.spoonflower.com/ make it easy to upload your designs and print them onto fabrics and more. What better accessory for your kitchen?

Tip: Keeping your keepsakes safe — when not on display — is important. We don’t want to look back and regret not taking care of or losing personal items. Consider archival sleeves for photos, keeping moisture levels even in storage containers and backing up photos into the cloud.

Looking Ahead!

What times we have lived through this past year! We hope everyone in our community has found solace in warm memories, takes some time to ponder and present them at home in style and looks ahead to all of the new memories yet to be made.

Let’s Meet & Welcome Owner Matt Kellett to the Mix!

Q & A with Matt Kellett, Owner, Orangetheory Fitness, University District

Centered around high-intensity interval training, Orangetheory® Fitness (OTF) is a boutique fitness studio chain. Its University District location will now open in 2021. We spoke with Matt Kellett, the man behind bringing the global brand to NW Calgary. Let’s learn about the franchise Find out about his interesting background.  Learn the challenges he has faced. And get up to speed on the latest on the University District location, including a reduced-price membership pre-sale!

Hi Matt, thank you for speaking with us. Can you please introduce yourself?

Hi, I’m Matt Kellett, owner of the upcoming Orangetheory Fitness studio in University District as well as the owner of studios in Royal Oak and Kensington.

I’m a former CFL professional football player. I’ve been working in the fitness industry for 17 years now. I brought the first Orangetheory Fitness studio to Calgary seven years ago when we opened Royal Oak. I am married to Khrista, a Geological Engineer. We have three sons, Maguire (15), Grady (13) and Max (11), and a labradoodle named Jersey.

Tell us more about your professional background before Orangetheory Fitness

I studied kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan before being drafted into the Canadian Football League. Across eight seasons, I played for the British Columbia Lions, the Edmonton Eskimos, the Montreal Alouettes, and the Ottawa Renegades.

The move into personal training was an early transition. I started at a ‘big box’ gym called World Health before moving into executive fitness as a Wellness Director at Bankers Hall Club.

Why did you choose University District as the location for your third Orangetheory Fitness studio?

University District is a perfect location! It bridges the gap between our other two studios in downtown Kensington and suburban Royal Oak. I knew University District was going to be a well-populated new community near big employers like the Alberta Children’s Hospital. That got my attention as healthcare workers and others would be moving into the area. Once I saw mock-ups of the new community, I was sold. I liked that it is highly walkable with a lot of amenities on offer. It looked like a vibrant community. And I wanted Orangetheory Fitness to be part of it.

How would you describe Orangetheory Fitness?

Orangetheory Fitness is a science-backed and technology-tracked workout. It is personalized to each individual. It can work for anybody, from Olympic athletes to grandparents maintaining their everyday fitness.

Normally, before class, everyone is attached to a heart rate monitor which syncs with a large screen in the studio to display everyone’s heart rate, caloric burn and what percentage of their maximum heart rate they are currently working at. Workouts usually consist of 30 minutes of cardio on our treadmills and flex deck machines. This is followed by 30 minutes on the workout floor. Our coaches track everyone’s performance throughout the session. Heart rate monitor screens and colour coding track progress.

There is also the ‘open gym’ option. Again, under normal circumstances, people are welcome to use the equipment at their own leisure. Because of our comparatively small membership base, the biggest thing our members talk about is how they love the sense of community at OTF.

Speaking of equipment, what is on offer at Orangetheory Fitness?

As well as the specially designed Freemotion treadmills and flex deck machines, we use our WaterRower. This machine lowers one’s body power and uses 84% of a person’s body muscle. TRX suspension bands, benches, dumbbells and an Ab Dolly for core strengthening are also used. Our heartbeat monitoring system is called OT Beat.

Normally, in a class of 24, while 12 people are on treadmills another 12 are on the workout floor. Our coaches oversee both groups and give intensity direction over a mic using terms like Base Pace, Push Pace and All Out, which all our members quickly come to know.

How are you responding to COVID-19 limitations?

Importantly, we are following all of the guidelines with great care. We are about to launch OT Live where live workouts are led by our certified coaches from our studios. It is completely live with OT Beat heart monitoring pairing, meaning members can receive personalized help right at the moment from coaches.

We have also just redeveloped our App, which allows members to make bookings and to set benchmarks. Workouts are tracked and recorded in the app meaning members can view their data, track their progress, and strive to beat benchmarks in the studio or at home.

On social media, there’s Trainer Tip Tuesday, where coaches teach you how to perform work out moves safely and effectively through videos. There’s also a webcast series, ‘Under the Orange Lights’ on YouTube that connects the global OTF community with industry experts in fitness and health to get real-time tips to help keep your mind in the game at this time.

Lights, Youtube, Action! Check out Under the Orange Lights on YouTube! Let’s go! There are some amazing online workouts offered by Orangetheory Fitness on YouTube until they open at University District and are permitted to host classes.

What is the progress update on the University District studio?

We are expecting to be open in the first part of 2021. Before then, a discounted membership pre-sale will be launched online for a limited time. I would encourage anyone considering joining OTF to grab their membership then as there will never again be another opportunity to benefit from such a low rate.

How do you feel about joining the University District Community?

In a word: excited! It’s such a vibrant community with everything you need, great for younger families but also for seniors. I wish my parents lived there, with so many amenities outside their door!

Once we are up and running, I know University District is a community in which Orangetheory Fitness will thrive and it is especially exciting to be part of some of the first retailers joining the retail main street.

Exceptional care and support for NW Calgary seniors at U/D

For couples, families, seniors and more, University District is certainly bringing Northwest Calgary a community that’s built for life!  We are creating a truly walkable neighbourhood that puts pedestrians — their safety and healthy lifestyle — first.

We have parks, green spaces, vibrant shopping, handy services and more.

Our builder partners are offering multi-family homes that allow us to stay close to the people who matter most at all stages of life. This commitment to building a community of age-inclusivity is shaping University District’s growth as new residents move into the area.

Aging in Place Makes Sense and Creates Belonging

While moving to a new home can be a stressful experience at any age, it is especially so for seniors, whose mental and physical health need to be a priority.

To help ease some of that stress and shed light on some exciting senior housing options, we are taking a closer look at life inside Cambridge Manor, a beautiful brand-new continuing care residence in University District that opened in June with an emphasis on the wellness benefits of aging in place.

At Cambridge Manor, an ‘age-in-place’ philosophy is embraced, which means a resident does not have to move again if their care needs change over time. The concept is vital to the people-first approach to seniors’ wellness, practiced by The Brenda Strafford Foundation, which takes care of operations at Cambridge Manor and is an industry leader in Alberta.

University District was chosen because of the conscientious effort on behalf of the developer — University of Calgary Properties Group — to be inclusive of all spectrums of the senior demographic, a key aspect of the aging-in-place philosophy.

To explore further the Aging in Place model, we spoke with Julie Arnold, communications and marketing manager for The Brenda Strafford Foundation.

“Aging in place means although the level of support changes as the individual’s needs change, they can stay living within the same community,” says Julie. “Some seniors require little support but have a desire for companionship and security in a safe and nurturing environment, while others’ wellness requirements have increased, and may continue to increase.

“At Cambridge Manor, we offer care along a continuum from assisted living with minimal support to extensive memory care for seniors living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. As people age in place, we can support them wherever they are without a need to relocate, which is much better for their overall wellness.”

Modern Facilities and Complete Services

Fitness, therapy, and health care services are on offer at Cambridge Manor, with 24-hour nursing staff on-site. A customized wellness plan is also tailored to each individual resident.

Red Seal Chef prepared meals and snacks are served, with COVID-19 protocols in place including staggered meal schedules in the dining room to allow for social distancing.

The Brenda Strafford Foundation Leads Research and Facilities

Wellness and healthy aging support are also offered to residents through a speaker series and programs in the community provided by The Brenda Strafford Foundation.

One of the Foundation’s four research programs at the University of Calgary is The Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging, which has a mandate for age-related research, interdisciplinary education, public policy, and community outreach. This connection between the UCalgary and University District ensures residents at Cambridge Manor will benefit from the latest knowledge and innovation in the field of aging and senior wellness.

There are more than 230 one-bedroom suites and studio units at Cambridge Manor, 75 of which are funded by Alberta Health Services.

One-bedroom suites and studios are tastefully decorated with warm, modern design and furniture that has comfort and functionality top of mind, including the convenience of a fridge and microwave in each unit.

Studio suites feature ensuite bathrooms and range in size between 301 to 323 sq. feet. Studio Suites are available on all four floors of Cambridge Manor, with access to all amenities and care levels.

Let’s take a look inside a studio at Cambridge Manor.

One-bedroom suites range in size between 495 and 517 sq. feet, featuring a separate bedroom and ensuite bathroom. One-bedroom Suites are available on the third and fourth floors for Independent and Assisted Living and have access to all amenities at Cambridge Manor.

Now let us take a look inside a Cambridge Manor one-bedroom.

Learn More About Maple!

Services at Cambridge Manor are also available at Maple, an independent-living community for adults 55-plus located next door, accessible by a Plus-30 walkway. One and two-bedroom units range from 580 to 1080 square feet.

Built by Truman, Maple is a community of condo owners and is another aging-in-place opportunity for seniors who want to stay in their homes as long as possible.

For a couple, if one spouse requires a higher level of care in Cambridge Manor, the other spouse in Maple can easily stay close and connected through the enclosed Plus-30 walkway! We look forward to welcoming our new neighbours!

Calgary chills call for active ways to ensure quality time for kids! Plus, Clever Daycare is coming to University District!

Family time is special and important. There’s no doubt about it! Yet in the winter, too much time inside — even when together and having fun — can become a bit much for parents and kids too!

How can we keep little ones entertained when the snow is flying? When indoor spaces can start to feel limiting? Or when activities are postponed?

Watching Frozen for the 10th time is a chilling prospect! So, University District set out to learn and chat about fresh ways to fill time in rewarding and wonderful wintery ways just for kids or for the whole family.

We first turned to Brad Henderson of Clever Daycare. We asked him about exactly that! What top tips are in his team’s toolbelt to keep kids happy, entertained and healthy in the winter? We were naturally curious to learn his perspective since the Clever Signature Centre is opening in University District in early 2021.

We look forward to welcoming more new businesses to University District in early 2021 on the heels of these exciting openings! How many have you visited? See what’s in store here!

When the temperatures dip, Brad and the Clever Centres team encourage families to embrace the weather and take advantage of it by setting off outdoors!

First, What to Wear?

The key for kids staying comfortable is proper clothing. Hats, boots, mitts, balaclavas and scarves are as essential as waterproof top layers and thin comfortable layers underneath; long johns and turtlenecks, made out of fine modern fabrics that are easy to move in, moisture-wicking and cozier than ever.

Now, Where To Go?

Once bundled up, head over to the Northwest Commons Park at Thirsk Street NW and Kovitz Lane NW. The playground is getting great reviews from kids on the Calgary Playground Review website. Ten-year-old Gordie says, “I really like the double swings!” Meanwhile, seven-year-old Nicky says, “I like the web, the swings and the slides!”

The ping pong table could be a fun spot to practice your hand-eye coordination when you swap traditional balls with snowballs. Head to the North Pond or check out the open green space in the NW Commons park for a quick winter walk to give the whole family benefit of fresh air and physical activity while watching for wildlife!

U/D TIP: Bring a camera and watch for wildlife. Did you read our blog post with fun tips for nature photography from a local expert? Check it out here!

And, What to Do?

When the cabin fever gets a little too real, a snowy day moving around outside together is in order!

Try tobogganing and sledding at the City of Calgary’s Confederation Park — especially when alight with winter lights — as a winter fun activity a short drive from University District. Or head up to WinSport for some downhill skiing or snowboarding fun. Lessons are expected to be available all winter long. We love the experience of skating amid the trees at Bowness Park. Especially with a hot chocolate intermission between spins!

All of these close-to-home active options will have the whole family sleeping better than babies that night!

YES, UNIVERSITY DISTRICT, CLEVER DAYCARE IS COMING!

Not only does Brad and his team share excellent options for outdoor NW Calgary winter fun, but the new Clever Daycare is also preparing to be a year-round caregiving destination and resource for children in and around University District.

In fact, outside of flexible home care services, Clever Centres hope to be the first in Alberta offering childcare services around the clock! Such 24-hour childcare services would be a wonderful benefit, especially for University District’s nearby hospital and healthcare workers. We can’t wait to share more details about this development closer to their opening day.

Intentionally designed from the ground up to be a state-of-the-art, safety-first childcare centre, the new U/D location will be bursting with colour and fun for kids.

Clever Daycare will include a common play space, open to the general public. This isn’t the daycare centre of decades past; this is a safe, engaging, and fun environment for children to learn and grow in! With ample space for more than 200 children, different play spaces within the centre, and fun yet educational programming, Clever Daycare knows just how to keep kids safely happy and entertained for hours at a time!

Through community partnerships and thoughtful planning, Clever Daycare offers kid’s classes that range from Zumba to woodwork, cookery to martial arts and more!

“We have drop-off programs, like sports programs on the weekends, where kids can be looked after for an hour or two,” Brad says. “This option is perfect when you want to bring kids out while you run around for a couple of hours to shop for groceries or visit the salon!” As Brad says, with so many options around home, in the neighbourhood and just a short drive away, make this winter the best one yet — by stepping outside as often as possible. He invites parents and families to inquire about Clever too!

Never hear “I’m bored!” again!

Fun at home can be educational and bonding for families. We have a host of tips — modern to old school — to make home time with kids engaging and worthwhile. Visit here for more information.
