Perhaps you heard about the recent, prestigious BILD Calgary Award recognition for University District’s Capella and Ivy or our previous BILD Alberta Award for New Community Development of the year. Maybe you were on your way to Market Mall and the beauty of the North Pond caught your eye. Perhaps it was news of a fun winter event — Northwestival — that drew you in.
However University District sparked your interest, we are so glad it did!
Despite a somewhat topsy-turvy year for most of us, Calgary’s real estate market experts are sending positive signals about why now may be a good time to buy.
Our aim — beyond creating a warm, welcoming and lively community — is to make every home search easy and tailored and relaxed with confidence knowing you are in good hands at each turn!
Join us on a buyer expedition with U/D and Brookfield Residential. We will break down the typical steps and introduce you to some of the helpful people and resources along the way to choosing a home in U/D. We spoke with Brookfield Residential’s Marketing Manager Justin Castelino about the home buying process and about timing a YYC house hunt!
“Despite an unusual year, Calgary’s real estate market experts are sending positive signals about why now is a beneficial time to buy” says Justin. “With incredibly low mortgage rates and great new opportunities within the Calgary area, this surge of activity has been positive for our city.”
According to Brookfield Residential, the feeling for guests between its two sales centres — Capella and Ivy — conveys how they will always do their absolute best to make each and every person who walks in the door feels at home.
“Finding the right home is such a journey, and the biggest benefit we have within the U/D is that Brookfield Residential carries a variety of homes and sizes and we work as a team to ensure we are finding the home that best suits each individual’s needs,” says Justin Castelino, Marketing Manager. “We are there to support and guide people throughout the process and hope to answer any of their questions and help them choose a home that is the right fit for themselves and their families.
Get the lay of the land at University District — from your favourite patio, propped in bed with your iPad or even on your cell phone — by visiting and bookmarking our website.
You can scope out our builders, learn what’s here, see how we are connected with UCalgary and more!
One of the most helpful tools you can turn to when considering U/D as a potential place to purchase is our website’s Find a Home tool here. The website is a natural resource to explore, leading to all of the builder websites and providing a good sense of the options — from condos to rentals and more.
What to expect: Our website is designed to give you the bird’s eye view of the community and all the latest happenings and ways to keep pace with our plans and progress. We update it often, just like our social media channels, with videos, photos and our monthly blog. Sign up to stay in the know.
You can’t miss it. This community hub houses all of the builders working in partnership with University District to bring a range of homes to life: for seniors, downsizers, first time buyers and renters. You can get all the information about the community in one place.
Our Discovery Centre Customer Experience Ambassador team offers the best next stage of help in any buyer journey. Meet the team here.
After researching online, setting up an appointment to meet with the team at the Discovery Centre to get a clear picture of the entire community and its plans is a fun step to learn more about what the community is all about. If you are interested in our community, staying abreast of new developments is important — new retailers, sustainability measures and long-term visions. At U/D, The Discovery Centre offers a friendly way to deepen research and start to get a more personal feel for the community.
What to expect:
● An interactive model table and media screens showcasing University District
● A tour of the builder show suites where builder sales representatives answer all your questions
● Videos explaining key and core components of the community
● A coffee bar, cozy kids play area and complimentary parking
● Community site plans to connect you with what’s coming
● A host of reading and collateral materials to take home and share with your loved ones or to review on your own.
If you have a good sense of what is within your budget and which offering you want to learn more about coming with those details is helpful.
TIP: Check out Quick Qualify, Brookfield Residential’s online platform that allows its guests to help determine how much they can borrow to purchase a new home. “This pre-qualification tool determines how much money they can borrow and what they will need for a down payment, says Justin. “Once a quick questionnaire relating to their personal and financial position is complete, we provide them with an estimate of their potential home budget. At this stage, we are performing a soft credit check without affecting their credit score!”
Once you have a sense of the options that appeal most to you, it’s time to consult with the financial pros. Scotiabank at University District offers a host of options if you are saving for a home, seeking a mortgage and looking to negotiate best rates and terms to help you attain your goals. Everyone has different requirements, so it is always best to connect with your financial experts.
What to expect: Scotiabank outlines these as the key steps in the process of saving for a home purchase, qualifying for a mortgage, negotiating rates and ensuring the best system for repaying the mortgage loan.
“The first step in the home buying process is to seek advice from someone knowledgeable” says Danielle Doyscher, Home Financing Advisor from Scotiabank. “Reach out to a professional, like an Advisor, and start the pre-qualification process to determine what purchase price range you could qualify for and how much you’ll require for a down payment and closing costs. This process involves reviewing your employment and credit history to determine if you meet your lender’s lending guidelines. Once you know your minimum down payment and upfront costs, you can work with an Advisor to help you put together a budget to deal with those costs.
During the pre-qualification process, your Advisor can lock in a mortgage rate for up to 120 days (depending on your lender). This provides added security that in the event of rising interest rates, your rate is locked in for that time period while you house hunt.
Speak to an Advisor to ensure that your mortgage has features that meet your needs and goals. This could include prepayment options to pay your mortgage off faster, and portability if you plan to sell and move in the near future, to help minimize prepayment charges. Also ask your Advisor about the benefits of a home equity program, like the Scotia Total Equity® Plan which can allow you to leverage the equity in your home, increase your borrowing power and achieve your financial goals faster whether you’re looking to buy a new home, invest more in your property, or plan for your future.*
If you’re looking for more information on the home buying journey, watch the Scotia Advice+ Homebuying Series which outlines what to expect every step of the way.”
TIP: For more information and to speak to an advisor who can assist you on your home buying journey, visit Scotiabank’s University District Branch, at 4141 University Ave NW, Calgary, call the branch (403) 956-9950 or visit Scotiabank Advice+ Centre to make an appointment today. Also, explore a variety of articles on Scotiabank Advice+ Centre that can help guide you, whether you’re a first time buyer, buying a second home or looking for ways to manage your finances.
TIP: Be sure to make time to explore the community. Here is a ready list of the latest retailers to open at U/D.
If you like what you saw and heard, and have a solid sense of your financial capacity and resources it’s time to schedule another visit to the Discovery Centre, to tour the showsuites again and to actually see and touch what you are buying and talk details..With a variety of options from condos, town homes and seniors living to rentals finding the right fit for you is a fun part of the experience.
Did you know? You can tour around the eight buildings that comprise Capella to view show suites. There is a single-condo building which offers 1- and 2- bedroom homes and seven, smaller buildings of single-level residences offering two and three-bedroom options.” Community Manager Elisa Plett says: “Now is a great time to check out the offers and amenities on show!”
What to expect: At this stage in the home buying process at U/D, it’s time to:
● To make some floor plan decisions
● To check options with your needs-and-wants wish list in hand
● Understand the builder’s specifications
● To collaborate with the sales specialist on crafting a contract based on the specifications that are right for you.
After researching online, visiting University District and our Discovery Centre, sorting out a budget and financing and finessing the details of the purchase that is best suited for you, comes time to put your name to an agreement. This is an exciting step that, with the right team, makes negotiation feel natural and proper … to the letter.
What to expect: When it comes time to document all of the specifications — for the unit as well as the features — the builder sales and your financial specialists will help ensure:
● An agreement that outlines your specifications and responsibilities is crafted
● Legal or notary assistance with a sound written and properly signed agreement
● You are set up for a smooth and timely occupancy plan
Purchasing a home — for yourself or as an investment– is an exciting process and it can be daunting. University District, its builder partners and local financial institutions are ready to provide peace of mind and help guide you on the journey.
With spectacular parks and pathways, a delightful Retail Main Street, close proximity to important services and helpful amenities, we can’t wait to meet you as you take a closer look at U/D!

The University of Calgary is a world-class research institution, top-ten Canadian university and sports haven dedicated to helping students succeed. And the best part? Plenty of the programming at the University is open to the public! That’s right – you don’t even have to be a student to catch the latest speakers on hot topics, get yourself some exercise and continue a journey of lifelong learning.
One of the most popular public access areas of the University of Calgary is the Active Living Fitness Centre, part of the Faculty of Kinesiology. We all know keeping active is important, and by providing more opportunities to the public, UCalgary is there to support all Calgarians in their fitness goals.
“Within active living, we provide so many opportunities to the community,” says Albert Iamartino, director of Active Living and the Outdoor Centre at the university. “We’re committed to being an innovative leader in providing pathways for lifelong health and wellness to children, youth, and adults and seniors.”
The Outdoor Centre is home to a rental shop where Calgarians can find all the tools they need to explore the great outdoors, from winter equipment, such as skis and ice axes, to summer water gear, including kayaks and canoes.
Looking to workout indoors? Active Living is also home to the Aquatic Centre, Climbing Centre and a gymnastics centre, all currently open with restrictions.
Summer equipment rentals open on May 1 – start planning your adventures ” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”now!.
Try your hand at speedskating in the Olympic Oval! Built for the 1988 Olympics, the Oval supports varsity and professional athletes alike while also providing space for community members to get active.
“We allocate use of the facility by thirds – a third goes to high performance, a third goes to varsity, and a third goes to the community,” explains Peter McCrory, director of the Olympic Oval. “It’s a healthy way to allocate what is a beautiful facility with amazing services to the community.”
Currently faced with COVID-19 restrictions, the Oval is open for minimal public use. In more normal times, it is home to Christmas party bookings, public skates, speed skating tournaments and more. There’s always something to do or watch at the Oval!
TIP: Check out the upcoming events at the Oval and keep an eye out for restriction changes here.
Keeping yourself in good condition doesn’t end with your body! An active mind is also key – and luckily, the University of Calgary offers many opportunities for lifelong learning.
One of the best ways to train your brain at home is with podcasts created by professors, staff and students at the university, covering topics from COVID-19 and how it affects all aspects of our lives to answering The Big Questions – yep, that’s actually the title of the podcast! Throw one of these on while cleaning the house or going for a walk and feel your brain get its daily workout.
If you’re looking for something more structured, look no further than Continuing Education at UCalgary. With courses and full certificates designed to refresh existing skills, add new ones to your repertoire or just help you explore a passion, it’s also a chance to learn more about what you’re interested in and keep your mind working.
“All of our courses are scheduled with the mid-career worker in mind,” says Gabriela Santamaria, associate director of marketing and communications with Continuing Education. “Nearly all of our courses are evenings or Saturdays, and many are online.”
This flexibility is perfect for the Calgarians who want to improve their skills without missing work and those who want to spend their evenings learning something new!
TIP: New courses are being added to Continuing Education all the time, including an upcoming Science Fiction writing course!
Last, but certainly not least, when we’re talking about overall health, it’s important to feed your soul! One of the best ways to accomplish this is through the arts – opening our minds and hearts up to new stories, developing empathy and transporting us to new worlds.
According to Dr. Joelle Welling, Interim Director of the School of Creative and Performing Arts at UCalgary, performing and fine arts are crucial for communities – even if we don’t realize it.
“The arts allow us to come together (even if only virtually right now) to communicate, share, celebrate and learn, and are vital to our well-being as both individuals and a community,” she explains.
Lucky for Calgarians, UCalgary’s Art and Art History department features productions and work shared with the public! While staying safe at home, community members can tune into performances from the UCalgary String Quartet this spring or check out works by the graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Students in the Nickle Gallery.
From online art exhibitions to performing arts broadcasts, there are many ways to engage with the arts in a safe way during COVID – and when we’re able to gather again, in-person performances are an even better way to share in the magic!
TIP: Check out all upcoming Faculty of Arts and Art History events here.
There’s always advice floating around on how to stay healthy – but lucky for Calgarians, we have a world class resource nearby! We have the University of Calgary right here, ready to help us care for ourselves – body, mind and soul. One of the many exciting places to explore right next to University District.
Pet Planet was among a range of new retail shops and services that we welcomed to University District at the end of summer last year as featured in our Retailers are Ready story at the time.
After opening on September 8th, 2020, its presence at the heart of our community has been welcomed at a time when the positive impact of pets on our wellbeing has been reinforced and pet ownership has grown.
Learning that this year marks 25 years since the very first Pet Planet opened in Calgary, we thought we would learn more about Pet Planet and what makes the brand and its ethos so different. We also caught up with the owner of Pet Planet University District, Debbie Bauman to find out about some of the products, services, and promotions this local store offers.
Pet Planet is a family business, founded on a passion for animals by Laura Leah English and her mother Joan. After the passing of their family dog Rueben to cancer, the pair embarked on a journey to help pets live longer and healthier lives, opening their first store in Calgary in November 1996. The brand now boasts over 60 franchise locations in Canada and the US.
The Kali’s Wish Cancer Foundation is an associated charity set up some years later in memory of Kali, a dog that also lost her life too soon to cancer. It is the first and only registered charity in Canada to solely support pet guardians and their families facing pet cancer.
Pet Planet has a policy of no sale of pets and no rawhide. It takes a holistic approach to pet retail based on education and being health minded. Pet Planet believes that most health issues in our pets are well managed with the right nutrition plan. University District owner, Debbie Bauman says that the Pet Planet Certificate of Trust is another important differentiator.
“I really think this is what sets us apart from most other pet stores and companies. The Certificate of Trust means our suppliers must go through a vigorous process before their products can be carried in our stores.”
Learn more about the Pet Planet Certificate of Trust.
Ranging from vitamins to pet carriers, Pet Planet’s curated mix of products works to promote longer, happier and healthier lives for pets in the community.
Debbie says, “We carry known pet brands like Acana, Origen, The Honest Kitchen, Stella and Chewy, and offer a wide selection of raw cat and dog foods and bones from companies like Instinct by Nature’s Variety, Primal, and Bold by Nature.
“We also have a huge selection of treats, and super fun toys from KONG, Planet Dog, Zippy Paws, and offer a great selection of memory foam beds from Be One Breed and we carry RC Pets leashes and harnesses. Honestly, I could go on and on, there are so many great brands out there that we are proud to stock.”
Pet Planet University District also aims to support local businesses. “We get all of the bones for Bone Tuesday from a local supplier, Dave’s Bones. He is based out of Calgary and provides raw and smoked bones, super yummy pepperoni flavor sticks, pigs ears and so much more. My dog Jasper is a big fan!” says Debbie.
To browse Pet Planet’s online product range, visit the Pet Planet website.
Every Tuesday at Pet Planet is Bone Tuesday where smoked bones are offered for just $2.99. Some lucky dogs see their owner or guardian buy a few and freeze them to enjoy later. Treat Thursday means 15% off all dog and cat treats, while Free Biscuit Friday means if you stop by the store with your dog on a Friday, they will receive free biscuits.
My Pet Planet is a free to join membership program where customers can earn points for every dollar spent and gain rewards to spend in-store.
“I encourage our local shoppers to also sign up to Pet Planet’s membership program,” says Debbie. “We also have 5% off purchases of 12 cans or pouches of dog or cat food in-store. We offer curbside pickup of phone purchases and will be adding home delivery in late May.”
Self serve dog washing is another service offered on-site. “We supply the shampoo, conditioner and dryer as part of the 15-minute wash for $10, all you need to bring is a towel,” says Debbie.
Sign-up to the My Pet Planet membership program.
Pet Planet’s role extends beyond retail into education by publishing a blog where pet owners
learn tips for optimum pet care.
TIP: Visit the Pet Planet blog! It publishes informative veterinary informed pet health articles in its Education Center on subjects as wide ranging as dealing with pet’s sensitive stomach, to the potential benefits of cannabis to our pets, and preparing for the dreaded loss of our pet. Visit the Pet Planet Education Centre, too.
Pet Planet promotes pet guardianship, rather than ownership, where guardians want the longest, happiest and healthiest life for the pets they love. Guardianship is centered around a simple series of shared beliefs that are put into action when caring for a pet. Learn more about Guardianship. Download the Guardian Health Manual.
Pet Planet chose University District as a community to be part of as it embraces pets as part of supporting an active, healthy lifestyle. From pet friendly amenities in condo buildings, like the dedicated dog run at Aria and the pet spa at Esquire, to an abundance of public outdoor spaces for dogs and their owners to enjoy, like Dale Hodges Park and the new Central Commons Park, pets have always featured in plans around the University District’s development.
“I opened in University District because I really wanted to be part of a vibrant community. Seven months after we opened our doors, I feel we have exactly that,” says Debbie. In the short period we have been open, we have developed the most amazing group of customers, both the two- and four-legged variety. There is something special about University District. You can feel it in every business you go into in our little but growing community. I can honestly say I feel privileged to be part of such an amazing area and look forward to being here as it grows and only becomes even better!”

Spring is upon us, which means more time outside to enjoy our local surroundings and nature at play. Those of us living in northwest Calgary should feel luckier than most as we have a park on our doorstep that is both enormous and extraordinary. Dale Hodges Park is a 100-acre (40.4686 hectares) natural environment urban park that is one of a kind in North America in the way that it is designed for the green treatment of stormwater.
Combining aesthetic appeal with functionality, the development of the park was a sign of the city’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. In this post, we look at the remarkable story behind Dale Hodges Park’s development, find out why it is so special, and learn about the man that it was named after.
This spring, we encourage you to visit Dale Hodges Park to gain a deeper understanding of how our local natural and manmade systems interact.
Round out your spring day with a stop in the University District to see what’s new this season. It’s been a busy winter with ” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>lots of openings. And see what’s coming soon!
To the east end of Bowmont Park, Dale Hodges Park is the site of the former Klippert gravel pit. The City of Calgary purchased the land in 2010 to restore the environmental health of the area and realized there was an opportunity to address the stormwater pipes carrying untreated stormwater into the Bow River.
Before the creation of Dale Hodges Park, stormwaters from eight northwest communities, including Silver Springs and Varsity representing nearly 4,400 acres (1,800 hectares), ran through underground storm drains in the gravel pit, directly into the Bow River.
The park’s development was a $26.8 million project to restore native wetland habitats and natural river formation and processes.
Then known as the East Bowmont Natural Environment Park (NEP), the project was a unique collaboration between Parks, Water Resources and Public Art.
View the East Bowmont Natural Environment Park (NEP) Design Plan (2014).
City of Calgary’s General Manager of Community Services, Katie Black says “It is a collaborative effort integrating art as landscape design and functional engineering to enhance a natural area, all the while using innovative methods to treat stormwater, moving it from polluted input to polished output.”
Thousands of trees, bushes and native plants were planted and seeded as part of the restoration to remove and destroy the gravel’s contaminants in the soil and groundwater by a process called phytoremediation.
Sans Façon, the lead artist team for WATERSHED+ worked with the engineers, landscape architects and consultants to create a unique and engaging space. Including artists into the infrastructure design team was an innovative approach to public art project management.
The design includes a nautilus pond, a polishing marsh, a wet meadow, a stream, outfall, a dry stream, riparian areas, and a lookout mound.
Dale Hodges Park was completed in the fall of 2018 and officially opened to the public in summer 2019. Watch the City of Calgary Youtube Video of Dale Hodges Park.
Dale Hodges Park is one of a kind in North America in the way that it is designed to handle and filter stormwater, through a combination of natural and man-made processes. The massive public art installation allows stormwater from the eight northwest upstream residential communities to flow slowly through water structures and landforms inspired by natural river morphology and hydrologic and sedimentation processes that serve as filters.
Residential snow and rain runoff travels through pipes then resurfaces in nautilus pond which is located at the west of the Park. The pond draining system swirls the water removing large sediment particles, before a surface stream carries the stormwater to the polishing marshes. Meandering man-made side streams in the polishing marsh area and wetland plants on the banks remove finer particles before the water enters the Bow River.
This green treatment process is estimated to reduce sediment in stormwater by 50 per cent, helping to protect the river system and its habitats.
View the Stormwater management concept details here!
Offering over 300 metres of boardwalk and bridges, and four kilometres of walking and cycling trails, this Spring is the time to get out there and explore Dale Hodges Park. Especially meaningful this year after a long winter inside.
The park layout is designed to inspire curiosity and a deeper understanding of the storm water treatment as the process is clearly visible to the public as it travels to the Bow River.
Connected to the regional pathway, you can marvel at the nautilus pond, polishing marsh, wet meadow, and man-made streams, from boardwalks and vantage points along the way. At the final outflow, keep an eye out for trout!
Dale Hodges Park is an important habitat for wildlife as it is part of Bowmont Park’s wildlife corridor connecting Nose Hill Park to the east, Edworthy Park and Shouldice Park downstream from Bowmont Park, and Bowness Park and Baker Parks upstream. Deer, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, beavers, muskrats and even coyotes are some of the animals that can be commonly spotted in this wider area that is also rich in birdlife.

The longest serving member of Calgary City Council, Alderman Dale Hodges took an active role in protecting and creating Calgary’s green spaces while in office from 1983 to 2013. At the official opening ceremony on June 26, 2019, Mayor Naheed Nenshi dedicated the park to Dale Hodges, in recognition of his many contributions to Calgary.
TIP: Watch a video of the official opening featuring Dale Hodges and Mayor Nenshi speaking (1m.50sec.) about it here!
Thanks to Dale Hodges and the visionary minds behind the park’s development plan, what was once a contaminated gravel pit is now a unique, functional, and natural space that not only treats stormwater, but is a recreational and educational space that can be enjoyed and explored by Calgarians for generations to come.
Often overlooked are the ways that floor coverings and window dressings can bring your style together in practical and pleasing ways.
Let’s consider the key factors — for floor and window coverings — of purpose, style, and maintenance. Making sure your home functions well is a factor in floor and window coverings. Plus, we dive into some ideas for where to shop and who to turn to when maintenance — like rug cleaning or blinds repair — is due!
Beyond paint schemes and art, nothing can tie a place together like great floor and window coverings. And, like choosing any element of home decor, finding the right floor and window dressings means determining answers to key questions about purpose, style, and maintenance. This is how to bring it all together.
Whether thinking about windows, floors or both, the first step is to give thought to these three key questions. Do you want:
Once you determine these answers you are set to start honing in on the floor and window decor layers that will truly unify your space. Tying in accent colours makes great sense for carpets — whether wall to wall or area rugs. A gentle hue of blue from a favourite painting carried into a rug brings harmony and flow.
A richly textured drape — think cotton velvet or sheer shimmering silk — can add character and sophistication to a bedroom or main living area. And if you like to play gypsy with your decor, you may want to explore trendy, affordable options for a fun, shaggy area rug to bring your space a fresh look and feel versus investing in an heirloom Persian hand knotted wool statement carpet. Or vice-versa! How realistic is it for you to tend to spills that stain delicate fibres? Are you prepared to invest in maintaining prized pieces or is high-wear and low maintenance more your style?
These important choices are all yours. So take time — over a cup of tea, tray of takeout or glass of vino — to ponder your picks. This will set you up for shopping success.
The options for flooring are so plentiful! First, let’s dive into top trends for carpets and rugs.
1. Animal prints, bold patterns and stripes are all the rage. These strong-upbeat style statements steal the scene from pastels and monochrome monotony. Keep in mind a little goes a long way when introducing this type of decor element. So rather than wall-to-wall, try a hallway runner or statement carpet for the foot or your bed or under your coffee table, nicely scaled.
2. Natural fibres and eco-fabrics for the win! Nothing complements wood or wood-looking tiles or vinyl floors like warm and sturdy sisals or wool carpets. These are more timeless than trendy, but a safe lasting bet.
3. Soil-proof! You may not be planning to bring a puppy home now, but once you meet some of our much-loved U/D dogs, your mind may change. Perhaps you have kids, or love to spend time outdoors. Even cooking can take a toll on carpets. Being aware of the world of options and warranties that can cover wear and tear is a definite must on your buying checklist.
When sizing your rugs, make sure you know how much space you have and what furniture will be in the room. Living room rugs generally work well in one of three configurations, depending on your space:
Bedrooms follow a guide similar to living rooms – the bed and nightstands on the rug, only two-thirds on the rug, or opt for two small rugs on either side of the bed for flexibility. No matter what you choose, make sure you have room to move around the room without tripping over your new floor decor!
Statement pieces, carefully sized for the chosen room, crafted to withstand high traffic should be the guide for choosing your carpets and rugs. From there, explore colour options, patterns and textures that will complement your favourite/keeper pieces of furniture and paint and wall coverings.
Calgary’s light-til-late summer nights and frosty winters offer clues to choosing window coverings. Popular picks for U/D residents include:
However you choose to dress your windows, keep in mind that they are an investment that should stand the test of time. This is a smart place to play with neutrals and textures or a range of whites rather than bold colours which date easily and may present a hesitation for future buyers.
Feeling fancy? Many of the new window coverings — drapes and blinds — are automated and can be opened or closed with the touch of a button or a verbal command to a home electronics system.
Layering window coverings is also a popular way to decorate — pull down black out shades with a low profile can be a discrete first layer, softened by drapery on rods for fun personalization and easy installation.
Similar to rugs, sizing window dressings can be confusing! The best rule of thumb is to choose drapes that are two to two-and-a-half times the width of the windows from side to side – you can do up to three times with sheer curtains to stack them – for perfect framing. When it comes to length, make your decision based on ceiling height and personal preference; higher ceilings allow you to raise the curtain rod, using the space to its full potential. When in doubt, always go for floor length.
TIP: It’s smart to focus first on your main living and dining areas and halls, but also consider high traffic areas like entries — from the outside and patios — as well as washable comfort rugs for the kitchen and bath as nice elements.
One of our favourite quotes is by Frances Clark who said: “There wouldn’t be a sky full of stars if we were all meant to wish on the same one.” This is so true when it comes to reckoning with the myriad choices for your home style. So, once you do tap into what you love in carpets and window dressing — treat it well!
There are excellent options for you to acquire and use cleaning products or fine local companies that can take care of your carpets and ensure they live their best life! Whatever your pick for a rug — flokati to animal hide — be sure to maintain it on the daily, monthly and yearly basis. Catch drips and dribbles as they happen. Give them a thorough vacuum or beating once at least once a month and every year, consider an expert touch.
As for window coverings, the same holds true. From regular dusting of blinds to professional dry cleaning or laundering to tune ups of their mechanical elements — cords and rods — will give them staying power!

New place? New plant! But how to choose the right greenery for your lifestyle, where your room faces and your decor preferences, the right container and the optimal size of plant for your space are all things to consider. These choices can benefit from some thought and guidance and we have some tips to get you started.
Take comfort in the fact that it doesn’t take much of a green thumb to successfully grow most houseplants. Just rely on a little bit of research to discover which plant is right for you!
TIP: As pretty and comforting as they are, did you know plants also purify your air and can help with mental health? More great reasons to go green at home.
If you have tips for plant care, do share! Tag us on social media or add feedback to the comments. We love to hear from you.
Ok, green thumbs, let’s cover some of the first bases.
In their element and yours: Some plants are known to be picky when it comes to soil types, amount and type of light, watering schedules and more. That’s why we recommend first choosing whether you want a long-living plant like a dramatic tropical that you can tend to over time or a seasonal plant — like a dish of spring bulbs or a mini-evergreen. One way to narrow choices is to peruse Save-On-Foods website for potted plants they sell!
Once you have chosen the plants that talk to you, go online or talk with the florist or garden shop about its preferences. And monitor your plant. Yes, they will talk to you and tell them what’s right. A little too much water and they sag from drowning. Not enough or infrequent water and your green addition becomes a yellow mess.
Light right! The same rule applies to light … so essential to plant health. That’s right not all plants respond well to the same light! The general rule of thumb is that low- and medium-light plants, like Pothos or Ficus plants, also need less water than their more particular counterparts. The best way to tell is by checking the soil. Bury a finger in the planter soil and when it’s dried all the way through, it’s time to water. Popular cacti and succulent families are the outliers here! Some of these spiky plants only need watering every few weeks, even in direct sunlight.
What about no light plants? You may have a closed-off corner you want to spruce up and aren’t looking to move a plant there every day or so. In that case, check out the snake plant (a member of the succulent family, so you know it’s hardy) or even the tropical Bromeliad plant. It can survive and thrive on fluorescent light alone!
There’s nothing wrong with high-maintenance plants. In fact, many people find Zen in the practice of caring for plants. If that’s you, check out the elephant ear. It has strict humidity requirements, and enjoys daily misting and dusting. Tune into Netflix and chill while snipping away at a bonsai!

More important than anything, we need to consider any furry friends living in our homes (or if we are hatching plans to introduce a pet) before making plant decisions. Many common household plants are poisonous to dogs and cats and can cause anything from mild illness to death – which is why doing your research is so important!
Peace lilies, for example, are one of the most toxic plants to both animals and humans – despite being a common choice for houses. On the other end of the scale, African violets and orchids are safe to have around pets!Even if you have safe plants, your little buddy may like to get into them, making a mess and potentially damaging the plant. If this is the case, keep them way out of reach.
Plants spruce up your space, but the container you put them in does a lot of work too! In recent years, planters have elevated from your basic white or terracotta pots to include interesting shapes, materials and even reproductions of classic art. You can also take those classic basics and paint them yourself, making them exactly what you want.
Whether it’s hanging boho holders or a graphic printed pot for a large floor plant, these pieces are just as important as pillows when it comes to accent pieces! Keep your plant’s needs in mind while picking out your perfect pot – you don’t want to overcrowd the roots in a too-small space. Most of all: be creative! Almost anything can become a container with the right considerations. That favourite teacup might be a unique home for an airplant! Think outside the norm and you could surprise yourself and compliment your decor.
We are bullish on these black and white oxen containers for cheerful air plants available from Save-on-Foods.
