Invite your friends and family to reconnect over a summer staple activity: firing up a BBQ! Enjoy the sun and warm breeze as you chat away along with some scrumptious cooking over the grill. University District has got you covered with planning the best barbeque ever! All you need to do is gather the ingredients and get cooking.

Communal BBQ and Patio Areas

While you are welcome to BBQ on your U/D patio or in one of the common courtyards like Esquire and Aria — which are well equipped with BBQ areas for residents — there are many parks and picnic sites in and around Calgary.

Did you know about these communal BBQ and patio areas in and around U/D?

These designated picnic site areas are available free for up to six hours –, on a first-come, first-served basis unless they are already reserved/booked. To ensure you have a BBQ and picnic site, book ahead with the City of Calgary.

Remember to book five days in advance and bring your issued permit with you to the picnic or BBQ site just in case.

TIP: At the Discovery Centre, there are a few tables and chairs set up for you to use! While this is not a BBQ spot per se, why not pick up smokey BBQ’d goodness from a Retail Main Street vendor and enjoy it here while you watch the world go by!

BBQs are Best at Bowness

Bowness Park is a beautiful spot to BBQ in the afternoons and evenings Monday to Friday from 3:15 pm – 9:15 pm or Saturday and Sunday lunch up to 2:45pm.

Barbeques at Bowness are free-standing metal containers which allow you to burn firewood or charcoal briquettes inside. You will need something to light the fire with, so pack matches or a lighter. Bring some tin foil too if you plan to cook directly on top of the barbeque to be sure you have a clean surface. Or how about roasting sticks for cooking inside the barbeque, closer to the heat! Chicken kabobs anyone?!

You can also bring your own camp-style or backyard barbeque into the park, provided it is propane-fuelled and does not use charcoal. Wheeling in a larger barbecue fuelled by propane is also acceptable!

Avoid frustration or disappointment and book your space ahead of time! Go here!

Tip: Pets are allowed, too! Be sure to bring all the essentials and playthings to make your pet’s time fun, safe and respectful of others.

Salmon with Peach Salsa

For 4 servings, these are the ingredients you’ll need:
1 pound skin-on salmon filets (about 4 pieces)

For a marinade:

½ tsp each ground cumin, black pepper, paprika, and chili powder

¼ tsp cayenne pepper

½ tbsp packed brown sugar

For the peach salsa:

½ tsp olive oil

¾ cup onion, thinly sliced

½ tsp granulated sugar

¾ lbs soft, ripe peaches, peeled, chopped

½ small papaya, peeled and finely chopped

½ jalapeno pepper, seeded, finely diced

⅙ cup fresh cilantro, coarsely chopped

1 ½ tbsp lime juice

½ tbsp lemon juice

½ tbsp olive oil

Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Grill some tasty salmon with these directions:

      1. Combine the cumin, black pepper, paprika, chili powder, cayenne pepper and brown sugar in a small bowl. Place salmon fillets skin side down on a lightly oiled or sprayed baking sheet. Gently rub mixture into the flesh. Cover loosely and refrigerate for up to 2 hours.
      2. Meanwhile, in a skillet, heat oil over medium low heat. Add onion. Sauté until soft, stirring occasionally. Add sugar and continue cooking and stirring for another 35 minutes. Do not overheat. Remove from heat and cool slightly. Coarsely chop onion and place in a medium bowl.
      3. Add peaches, papaya, jalapeno pepper, cilantro, lime and lemon juices, and olive oil to the onion. Mix gently. Cover and set aside.
      4. Preheat broiler or barbecue. Grill fillets approx. 8 minutes, depending on their thickness (10 minutes per 2.5 cm thickness). When done, the fish should flake easily when tested with a fork. Top with peach salsa and enjoy!

You may know University District’s Argyle by Homes by Avi for its integrated green roof or its community garden, its spacious suites and expansive retail main floor.

But did you know that Argyle is also attracting real estate buyers who intend to rent out their units for added income or as pure investments?

“We are seeing lots of interest from all walks of life as people seem to be rethinking their homes and their financial goals, too,” says Homes by Avi Marketing Manager Stephen Dawe.

As part of this shift, Homes by Avi is anticipating interest from people who see opportunity in Argyle as an investment.

“We didn’t design Argyle for the investor market. These homes could be forever-homes and will be for many of our residents.

“But the appeal of the inherently vibrant U/D location, its closeness to UCalgary, hospitals and Market Mall that make people want to live here are all the same reasons investors are confident in Argyle as a great investment for renting out units.”

Investors Knock on Argyle’s Door

Local property buyers and those from as far as BC and Ontario are learning about University District and its Argyle development.

The fact that University District is situated in the largest employment centre outside of Downtown Calgary, is a sustainably built community and is becoming so dynamic — with a range of shops, restaurants and services — plus fun activities like zumba at the North Pond and Village Ice Cream pop-up fun all summer at the Discovery Centre for I Can for Kids.

“They are eyeing Argyle for its investment appeal! Purchasing a unit in Argyle to rent out — to city newcomers, students, hospital staff, professors and professionals — makes short and long-term sense to them,” says Homes by Avi marketing manager Stephen Dawe.

“So we are making it easy for people to purchase homes to rent to this influx of people.”

Feature-rich Argyle units are also available for purchase fully furnished and tastefully decorated by the experts in design at Homes by Avi. There are two finished packages — the Harlequin and the Wescott — to peruse!

Did You Know? Argyle has just launched a brand new website catering to the investor market. Its savvy sales team can provide a current schedule for the building development as well as a Rental Property Investment Pro-Forma to help you make an informed investment decision. Check it out here: https://www.homesbyavi.com/calgary/search-by-community/calgary-nw/argyle-UD/argyle-condos.

People are a Big Part of Argyle’s Appeal

What brings the bustle to U/D? Beyond the range of retailers, restaurants and park spaces, University District is first and foremost about the people.<

“People are a draw for real estate investors as much as the amenities and quality of a unit,” says Stephen. “Just look at the numbers! UCalgary employs 5,000 faculty and staff and sees more than 40,000 continuing education, full and part time students. Foothills Medical Centre has 17,000 staff and almost 750,000 annual patient visits.  Alberta Children’s Hospital has 3,500 staff and physicians and 340,000 outpatient visits a year. Then there is Market Mall with about 1000 people working there.”

Being close to work is more than a bonus for reduced commuting times!  It’s a strong motivator for real estate investors who see opportunities in demand for homes near major employment centres and schools.

ith all of the new activity in commercial spaces at U/D, the timing has never been better. Visit our recent blog post outlining what’s new and coming soon around the corner from Argyle!

A natural hub of convenience!

“While Argyle is first and foremost a building for resident home-owners, many purchasers are renting out their units and it’s never been easier to explore investing than now with the Argyle team at U/D online or with a visit to the Discovery Centre,” says Stephen.

Who fancies picnic fare?

Whether it’s brunch with friends, lunch with the kids, a romantic evening out or even a work get-together, picnics are a great way to soak up some vitamin D and relax while snacking away!

Of course, setting up your outdoor eatery takes a little planning – and we’re here to help! Read on for tips to create the perfect picnic atmosphere, U/D-style!

Where To Go

The most important question to answer is where your picnic will be taking place! Lucky for us, University District – and Calgary as a whole – is full of green spaces where you can take in lovely views while eating your meal al fresco.

In U/D, check out the North Pond as a serene and beautiful picnic spot, with lookout views and a stunning grove of trees to serve as your backdrop! Ample seating makes the pond a pleasure. Local spots to fill your hamper are so close by! Save-on-Foods comes quickly to mind.

How about a summer celebration in the NW Commons Park? Its award-winning inclusive playground, oversized chess and ping pong offers not only a great place to picnic but built-in accessible fun!

Venturing into Northwest Calgary, the park options are endless – from the gazebos and picnic spots in Edworthy Park to wading areas in Bowness Park, there really is an ideal picnic spot for everyone!

Looking to make your picnic an adventure? Head over to Nose Hill Park, leave the car in the parking lot and take a quick hike up to the top of the hill and reward your hard work with a great meal and phenomenal city vista!

TIP: Some parks in Calgary have charcoal grills available for use, while others allow small camp stoves to be brought along! Check the City of Calgary parks page to see more.

Plan Your Theme

Getting a patio brunch spot in the city can be tough during the summer months. So why not get the group together for an outdoor brunch in a central park? Ask everyone to dress up in themed garb — 1920s flapper-style, Hawaiian luau, hippie gear or all-stripes — to and make an event of the meal.

If you and your coworkers are getting tired of sitting in the office kitchen, it’s the perfect time to shake things up with a professional picnic lunch. Bringing a little fun to the middle of the day by ordering in or bringing your lunch pot-luck style from home and heading over to the nearest park!

Kids love picnics too, so why not plan a special outing for the children in your life? Make it themed to their favourite movie, or just have them help pick their favourite foods – the excitement of eating in the park, followed by play time, is often enough to keep them happy for hours. Picnics are also a great birthday party plan, allowing you more time to enjoy the day without having to prep for – and clean up after! – a house full of kids. Remember to pack a kite, a ball, a frisbee and Bluetooth speakers! Read on for more perfect picnic packing tips.

TIP: Starting June 1, some Calgary parks are allowing alcohol consumption in specific areas – so you don’t have to give up the brunch mimosas or lunch beers! It is based on a booking system with time restrictions – read all the details here.

What To Bring

Sandwiches and lemonade are a picnic meal classic, but that doesn’t mean it’s your only option. Cook a meal at home and pack it up to take to the closest park – although be sure to pack well so hot food stays hot and cool food stays, well, cool.

If cooking isn’t your thing – or you’re looking for something quick and easy – opt for takeout from a local restaurant! There are so many options right here in U/D! From a few slices of pizza to a five-course meal, the ease of picking up dinner on the way to your coveted picnic spot means less to worry about and more time to savour your meal.

TIP: Check out our local retailers for take-out ideas. And this guide to parks and play areas for more ideas on where to head!

In addition to your food, remember to pack hand sanitizer, sunscreen and bug spray! If you’re out in the sun, remember to drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

TIP: Making picnics environmentally friendly means ditching the plastic utensils and paper plates. Opt for reusable or compostable selections and refillable drink bottles instead! Be sure to use garbage receptacles and keep our outdoor spaces clean and tidy for the next visitors and the planet!

Summer is fleeting! So let’s get outdoors and enjoy it every chance we have! When out and about enjoying Calgary’s many green spaces, remember to respect the area by cleaning up, using garbage receptacles and not feeding wild animals. Keeping our parks clean and safe means more are able to enjoy!

E-Scooters are back!

E-Scooters are back on the streets of Calgary this month, following a 16-month trial in 2019 and 2020.

It’s perfect timing as we move into summer and want to get around and have fun outdoors. At a time when many usual activities are still unavailable to us, e-scooters are an easily available mobility option to get to work, to play and to discover what is easily accessible in the U/D vicinity.

We’re here to get you up to speed with e-scooting and Bird, the operator of e-scooters in and around University District, and to provide suggestions for places to tour and stop at on your e-scooter journey.

TOP REASONS TO E-SCOOT

Did you know?  Calgary was the first Canadian city to record one million e-scooter rides?

Here’s why Calgarians say they love e-scooters so much:

  • Saves time on short trips
  • Takes you exactly where you want to go
  • Provides access to various transportation options
  • Fills in the need for car use for that vital first/last kilometer to home/work/school
  • Improves physical health by encouraging you to be more active

E-scooting is possible in and around University District with the Bird app! Visit your favourite app store and search for the Bird app so you can scoot with the rest of the U/D flock!

GET RE-ACQUAINTED WITH BIRD

Back with a sleek new look, Bird Canada is one of only two operators to be granted a permit to operate their shared e-scooters in Calgary and the only successful brand from the pilot trial to return in an official capacity. A wholly Canadian owned and operated company, Bird Canada has chosen Calgary as their Canadian operational headquarters and is also planning to bring e-bikes to the streets soon.

It is returning with a fleet of all new silver Bird e-Scooters that have a built-in bell and new tires that address safety, traction and stability.

“Our return to Calgary goes far beyond the typical roll-out of e-scooters to include a meaningful commitment to the City,” says Alexandra Petre, General Manager of Bird Canada. “This year, we’ve formed a partnership with University District as well as University of Calgary, demonstrating our commitment to offer micro mobility solutions in sustainable, innovative ways. “We have a new fleet of Bird 2s that are very sleek, very exciting, very fun to ride and also incredibly safe.”

GET TO KNOW THE NEW RULES!

E-scooters are here to stay, even after the summer months. The city’s transportation department will ask scooter companies to pick up their scooters if there is a snowfall but will allow them to operate year-round on warm weather days.

Scooters will be allowed to operate on pathways, bike lanes, temporary adaptive lanes and quiet sidewalks.

A new rule this year allows scooters on quieter streets with lower traffic volumes and speeds, like those in residential neighbourhoods.  Rules still in effect from the pilot project include only allowing people 18 and older to ride and only one person on a scooter at a time.

According to the city, violating the rules can net you a fine from peace officers or Calgary police, and the companies can also issue fines through their app as they will be monitoring rider behaviour using data collected by the scooters. There’s a highly visible and unique identification number on each device and decals with raised lettering to make it easier to report improperly parked devices.

“Anybody that mis-parks a scooter is subject to a $10 fine,” says Petre. “Anyone that has three instances of such a fine can actually be kicked off the app.” Visit the City of Calgary Shared e-scooter mobility program page for full details of program rules, fines and Covid- 19 safety when riding.

GET TO KNOW WHERE TO GO!

Bird e-scooters make access to, from and within our community even easier. Although you can go anywhere within the designated zone while going about your everyday life, e-scooting is also a fun way to get out and explore. Here are some ideas:

  • Come up the Bow River path from downtown for a scenic ride, then go up on 29th Street on 19th Street and come into U/D. With 12 km of pathways around the community it’s a great scooter loop!
  • Take a break for coffee at Monogram or stop for lunch or a light bite at Freshii or Sesame.
  • Stop for a complimentary Little Villager at the Village Ice Cream summer pop-up Thursdays through Sept 9 from 3-6pm. Donations are welcomed and will support local charity I Can For Kids, helping feed children and youth impacted by hunger all year long.
  • Seeking retail therapy? Shop along the Retail Main Street in outlets like Denim & Smith, Pet Planet, Market Wines, Curious and Save-on-Foods.
  • Wanting to get more active? Stop for a spin session at newly opened YYC Cycle.
  • Come to the end of your trip? Grab a burger or side of fries to take home from Five Guys, or TexMex from BarBurrito.
  • Visit the North Pond or South Pond to watch the world and wildlife go by!
  • Looking to explore even more of the NW, discover innovative and inspiring Dale Hodges Park. Loop from Dale Hodges Park along the Bow River to Bowmont Park and Bowness Park and back along the river to Shouldice Park and University District.
  • Edworthy Park – just down the hill from U/D, this beautifully landscaped area is surrounded by walking and hiking trails, cycling trails, playgrounds, and an outdoor fitness park.

Remember to ride safe and be respectful of others when riding an e-scooter. Obstructing or interfering with pedestrians, drivers or cyclists is a no-no!. Be careful and happy e-scooting!

Looking for a spot to stop on your scooter ride and indulge in a picnic? Make your way to to North Pond or NW Commons Park. Unpack a snack and watch the world go by!

Get your bearings at U/D with some quick tips and references!

As part of every new, warm welcome we extend here at U/D, we wanted to take a look at some things to consider when moving into a new community. Let’s take a look at our Safety and Community Care Checklist for newcomers.

● Submit “Change of Address” form to Canada Post and tell your friends… check!
● Pick up a handy fire extinguisher … check!
● Current and complete first aid kit…check!

These are just a few of the tips we have gathered for moving into your new home. Let’s explore other helpful and in some cases — vital — local services to help ensure a smooth transition.

Step One: Before the move.

Contact a moving company.
Xtracare Movers is a highly rated, family-owned company located in NW Calgary offering professional moving services since 2008. They advise giving yourself two months’ lead time to ensure you are ready for the big day! They can step you through all the important details for packing and preparing your move.

Tip: Be sure to let your chosen building’s manager know your mover details and move-in plans in advance.

Stay connected.
Contact internet, TV, and utility providers to cancel current service and ensure you are set up at U/D.

Make health a priority.
Fill prescriptions for any medications you regularly use so there is no interruption to your healthcare schedule. Save-on-Foods University District has a wonderful pharmacy and health department. They can help refill your existing prescription simply when you complete an online form here! Did you know? Shoppers Drug Mart is also on its way to U/D?

● Other reminders include updating subscriptions; organizing a child- and/or pet minders for moving day, updating your driver’s license and car insurance.

Step Two: Moving day.

Conduct the final walk-through of your new home.
Each of our builder partners offers transition support to ensure a smooth, celebratory move!

Final order of business?
Have your first meal in your new home. Moving is a lot of work so you might not want to cook on your first night. Good news there are lots of places to right in U/D.

Tip: See who is here and who is coming at to our retail main street.

Step Three: Health and safety smarts.

Make spare keys!
There is nothing more unnerving or frustrating than losing, looking for or forgetting keys. Check out MinuteKey a short drive from U/D.

Care and support connections.
From Foothills Medical Centre to Alberta Children’s Hospital to handy dental offices in U/D like University District Dental, it’s a great idea to tap local medical and dental resources for regular check ups and ongoing personal care. Learn more about University District Dental on our blog.

Put fitness first.
Soon-to-open OrangeTheory Fitness and YYC Cycle are two go-to fitness spots you will want on your radar. Find out more about nearby options at UCalgary Active Living on our blog too!

Visit the Discovery Centre

Get settled.
This doesn’t mean settling for less! Grooming, grocery, banking, childcare and more resources are all close to University District and can bring peace of mind and the feeling of security we all value in a neighbourhood.

Tip: Be sure to wear reflective clothing or lights when jogging, walking or cycling around U/D. Safety first!

Step Five: Keep exploring!

Health and safety extends to pets too.
A great local resource for your furry friends is Pet Planet. Learn more about them here!

Go beyond!
On the skirts of U/D is a wonderful world of parks and promenades, cycle trails and more to explore.

Stay safe.
When walking around U/D take note of the extra care and attention to the lighting. Did you know that U/D has taken special care to ensure its pathways are downlit for our safety as well as to keep darker skies for wildlife, too.

We wish you a smooth move, exciting transition and a lifetime of new discoveries here at U/D. We encourage you to check out this blog post by Calgary’s Everyday Tourist for a fresh perspective on U/D progress.

Unique Amenities Make U/D Even Better!

Love condo living, but miss hosting outdoor get-togethers in a big backyard? Trying to figure out how to do your DIY projects in a tight space? Look no further than U/D – each of our builder projects features exclusive on-site amenities, all for you to enjoy! Let’s take a look at some of the unique offerings you will find around U/D.

Why Amenities Matter

When it comes to condo living, there’s a lot to be said for having access to functional and fun spaces (inside and out) without having to worry about all the maintenance and upkeep! Plus, many of these spaces just make life easier – less scheduling and running around leaves you with more time to enjoy your home.

Getting Outside

When it comes to living life outdoors, Aria by Gracorp Properties has residents covered! This rental building boasts a 20,000-square-foot interior courtyard with various spaces to lounge, play and connect with friends and neighbours.

What most people notice first in the Aria courtyard is the centrally located Land Yacht, a 1973 Airstream trailer that’s perfect for hanging out and enjoying coffee with friends! This unique piece of history has a welcome home at Aria.

Looking for a little sport in your life? It’s never far away at Aria, with bocce and pickleball courts that are perfect for getting active on the weekends. After a busy afternoon on the courts, grab your hotdogs and buns and head right back to the courtyard to make use of one of the eight barbecue areas free for your use. Once you’ve grilled up your delicious meal you can enjoy it outdoors in one of the lounge areas!

Aria isn’t the only U/D home with an emphasis on the outdoors either. The IVY by Brookfield Residential boasts a community garden and playground right on the property.

For the social butterflies, August by Homes by Avi boasts a 4,400-square-foot outdoor courtyard on the second floor, perfect for lounging in the sun or hosting friends for wine night!

For more information on amenities and move in ready condos in August by Homes by Avi, check out this blog.

TIP: Getting out to enjoy nature is easy in our community with a plethora of parks and pathways to bike, walk, run or play in! Here are some ideas for June.

Staying Indoors

In Esquire by Truman, not only will you find a pet spa and fitness room, you’ll also find a movement studio for yoga and similar workouts, a spin studio and a workshop for all the DIY-ers in the house!

“We worked in amenities residents would need, especially in a more compact environment,” says Morgan Fraser, digital marketing manager at Truman Homes. “These are things that you don’t even necessarily think about when you’re downsizing or moving out for the first time.”

In particular, the workshop serves to fill the role that a garage would in a single-family home – a dedicated area to get your hands dirty and work on art, repairs or other projects.

“The workshop is intended to give an extra space for people who enjoy working with their hands or doing DIY hobbies – even with children, things like painting can be messy and you may not want it happening in your home,” Fraser says. “It’s one of our more exclusive offerings.”

When it comes to fitness, Fraser says more space – and extended 24-hour openings – gives everyone the opportunity to exercise how they want without worrying about crowding, time limits or even leaving the building.

“There is demand, especially in University District, for 24/7 fitness facilities for people working odd hours or studying – we wanted to them to have that flexibility,” Fraser says, adding that the movement studio allows for meditation, yoga and stretching without crowding the fitness room – a win-win for lifters, runners and yogis alike!

Throughout U/D, many buildings feature amenities like in-building pet spas, fitness areas and spaces for entertaining. In addition to the outdoor courtyard, August boasts a private indoor lounge with a wet bar for entertaining; Maple by Truman features a barber and salon for the 55-plus set; and back in Aria there’s a games room as well as an indoor lounge and kitchen for entertaining!

Having amenities that work for your life is just as important as loving your home – and at U/D, there’s so much choice, you’re sure to find the perfect home! Check out available homes in U/D here – and stay tuned as more join our community!

So much to do this June!

As we move into June and the summer season with the weather warming up, many of us can’t wait to get outdoors and enjoy what our neighbourhoods and wider city have to offer, whether it’s getting active or dining al fresco. It’s especially important to take advantage of these options this year at a time when many of our usual indoor activities may remain closed. Here are a range of ideas for enjoying outdoor living this June and beyond, including suggestions for quality time with Dad this Father’s Day, June 20th.

DISCOVER PARKS WHILE SPOTTING BIRDS

A wonderful way to get to know our city and to discover new parks around Calgary is bird spotting, or birding.

Why not take a fresh look at Bowness Park this summer through the eyes of a birder? You might see a Great Horned Owl, Mallard Ducks, and for sure lots of chickadees and nuthatches.

Pay a visit to Nose Hill Park, Confederation Park and Dale Hodges Park to see what other birds you can spot. Check out our bird photography blog for a refresher on some local birds here!

ENJOY OUTDOOR EATING WITH A BARBEQUE

Bowness Park is also a good choice for a barbeque with friends and family like, as are Edworthy Park and Riley Park.

BBQ pits and stands are available for booking and all parks with picnic areas allow you the option to use a personal propane barbeque. Book a picnic site or BBQ site in Bowness Park, Edworthy Park and several other parks here.

Don’t need a barbeque? U/D also offers a number of park spaces perfect for a picnic from the North and South ponds to the Northwest Commons Park. All are great spaces to eat al fresco! For a wide choice of meats, veggies and buns for your BBQ, stop by Save-On-Foods.

TREASURE TIME WITH NATURE WHILE FLY FISHING

The Bow River is renowned as one of the best freshwater trout rivers on the planet, with Calgary gaining a reputation as the Montana of the North. Get out and enjoy quality time with Dad among awe inspiring local nature.

For all your fly fishing needs, visit Iron Bow Fly Shop at 163, 5005 Dalhousie Drive NW.

GET LUNCH OR DINNER DELIVERED TO YOU!

A special meal at home, on your balcony or patio, or at a nearby park without any of the preparation is also an option with takeaway available from local eateries including from Sesame, Five Guys, Freshii and BarBurrito in U/D.

Offering a wide choice of healthy bowls, salads, wraps, soups and more, you can order Freshii in store, through the Freshii app, on freshii.com, or from your local 3rd party delivery apps.

Burritos, quesadillas and tacos from BarBurrito are the perfect option for family coming together. Choose from the menu and get the BarBurrito app!

GET INSPIRED BY PUBLIC ART

The City of Calgary has invested greatly in public art in recent years. Look for the works of local Calgarian artists’ and famous artists from all over the world in NW Calgary and the wider city.
