Each extraordinary woman is worth learning more about and we hope you’ll be as inspired by them as we are. Let’s meet them!

Donna Marzolf epitomizes a successful woman as the Senior project manager at our award-winning development company, West Campus Development Trust, with her leadership and contribution to the vision of developing University District as people first mindfully made community. Her greatest achievement though? Her twin daughters. Donna knows it’s not easy to juggle motherhood and a career and be successful in both. Here she tells us about her work-life flow and offers advice for a successful career.
How did you get to where you are in your career today?
I grew up on a farm in rural Saskatchewan where logic, creativity, mathematical and mechanical skills dominated farm life. When it came time to choose a career path, engineering seemed like a natural fit.
At the time of my graduation, it was uncommon for women to become engineers, let alone in the construction and development industry. The odds were stacked against me from the moment I stepped into the field but my drive and love for engineering gave me the strength to rise to the challenge. As a result, I’m working in a role that I’m truly passionate about.
The excitement for me as senior project manager for West Campus Development Trust is walking through a bare parcel of land as you visualize the change, piecing all the moving parts together to come up with a plan of what will become of an empty space. It’s an incredible feeling to go from a blank slate to a community that people call home!
As a single mom of twin girls, how do you find work-life balance?
As a single working mother, you never quite feel like you are making it work. But somehow, magically, on a daily basis, the meetings happen, the kids are fed, homework gets done, and the kitchen doesn’t look like a complete disaster.
I realize that I lead at work and at home, and the skill sets are no different. The only difference is how I flow between them. It’s proven to be quite the balancing act but setting the boundary to focus separately on family and work is key. My inbox is never empty, but I make sure my computer and phone are away (although we all give in sometimes!) so I’m not tempted to respond during family time. It’s hard to disconnect from work, but it makes time with my girls that much more enjoyable and keeps my mental and physical health in check!
If you could give one piece of career advice, what would it be?
Step outside the box. Know and believe you have the ability to do something different than the norm. In doing so, you’ll unlock your true potential and that right there can be a game changer!
Fast Facts about Donna

For over ten years, Marie Pier Germain has worked for the family business, Canadian boutique hotelier Group Germain Hotels. Although the company was co-founded by her mother and uncle, Marie Pier has worked her way to the top by demonstrating her skills as a manager and taking initiative with new hotel projects. She started her career by folding towels and waiting on tables, but now she is the operations director and leading woman behind the Alt Hotel brand – the chic, unconventional, design-oriented hotel that will be coming to U/D in fall of 2020. The 15-storey, 156-room hotel Alt Hotel Calgary University District will be Marie Pier’s third project in Calgary, a unique mix-used development that will include a retail component and connected to the August by Avi Urban.
Excited about the future of Group Germain Hotels, Marie Pier shares with us what motivates her at work and the importance of finding a career you’re passionate about.
What do you love most about your role as operations director?
Every day is different. As operations director, I work closely with the architects and designers to bring together a vision that marries our knowledge and talents to bring a project to life. Every detail matters! From the layout of our spaces and amenities we offer to how the experience of our guest is considered into the development. There’s never a dull moment!
With a busy, ever-changing schedule, there’s always a meeting that makes it a little more fun. Meetings with interior decorators to discuss unique lobby designs to a perfume designer to create a signature smell for a hotel, or tasting a menu with a potential chef partner — it keeps me on my toes and wanting more. Routine does not exist but the creativity, liveliness and challenge of it all are what I love most!
When did you realize working for Group Germain Hotels was your true calling?
Being born into the hotel industry gave me early exposure to the dynamic and evolving world of development and hospitality. To this day, I have fond memories of strolling down the halls and watching my mom prep the kitchen. It was where I spent my evenings and weekends, and studied after school. It was my second home!
I knew early on in my studies I didn’t want an office job where I ran calculations all day. After studying engineering, I made the decision to join the family business and started on Calgary’s first Group Germain Hotel project, Le Germain Hotel. Seeing an idea turn into something tangible was invigorating! I knew then that this was where I wanted and needed to be, and I haven’t looked back since.
If you could give one piece of career advice, what would it be?
Whether it’s my role as a mom or a leader to my team, life is about putting more tools in our toolbox. Take on more responsibilities and learn from your mistakes. Everyone gets it wrong sometimes. In fact, most things I’ve learned were by doing it wrong the first time – it’s part of the growing pains of acquiring life and work experiences. It makes us stronger.

The phrase “having it all” is different for many women, and for Tiffany Ardolino, Senior Manager of Customer Development with University District builder partner Brookfield Residential, it’s all about enjoying life with a smile on her face and a pep in her step. What does that look like? Her thriving career keeps her grounded, while she’s chosen to challenge herself by continuing her education with an e-MBA program. And prioritizing her family to make sure there’s a balance and downtime for her personal life, is not an easy feat.
Tiffany shares with us how she started in the real estate profession as a modern marketer and her passion for her role and team.
How did you start your career?
Finding a job you love is often a bit of a journey. I knew at an early age I loved advertising. I was fashion-obsessed and used to browse through magazines, clipping everything I liked. Even when I was young, there was always a piece of me that enjoyed the visual nature of marketing; the ability to tell and sell a meaningful story with imagery and words.
After graduating with my Bachelor of Management in Marketing, I ended up working with my dad who worked in the real estate industry and I fell in love with an industry that keeps you on your toes. Whether it’s market conditions, new product innovations, or up and coming communities, there’s always an opportunity to put your skills to the test and bring creative ideas to the table. It’s fun and creative!
There’s also something to be said about being part of an industry that has a lasting effect and has a tangible, long-term outcome. I can drive through a community and walk through a showhome that I helped market – it’s an everlasting feeling to know that I participated in how a home or community came to be.
What’s a day in the life of Tiffany look life?
Every day is different, which I think is to be expected nowadays, especially in an industry that craves more innovation. You can’t rinse and repeat, which keeps things interesting!
A typical Monday starts with checking sales – foot traffic, web traffic, registrations – to get a pulse on the health of the business. From there I meet with team members and identify our priorities for the month.
Next, I’ll connect with the product development team and this is where things get fun! Here we discuss what new home models need to be developed, review new designs and work with the marketing team to add their flair and creative lens so we can deliver the best product and experience possible. It’s a very customer-centric role that offers the perfect balance between creativity and business.
I’m fortunate to work with a dedicated team that loves what they do, which makes my job easier to love and appreciate.
If you could give one piece of career advice, what would it be?
Be assertive. It shows you are engaged and interested and is a key quality that has helped me get to where I am today. More importantly, you need to believe in yourself or surround yourself with people who believe in you. After all, positive reinforcement from time to time is needed, and encouragement keeps you motivated no matter what line of work you’re in.
Fast Facts about Tiffany
● She is pursuing her e-MBA.
● She is the mother of two boys.
● In her spare time, she enjoys skiing, golf, spending quality time with friends and family

In a short period of time, U/D went from a vision of a master-planned community to a liveable, walkable, mindfully-made neighbourhood where future residents like Melissa Bontorin and Garrett Bowman, first-time homebuyers, millennials and urban living newbies, are calling home.
In our second installment of Block Talk, a series that introduces residents and neighbours, Melissa and Garrett offer insights on starting life together in U/D. Keep reading to learn more about urban living and what drew them to our vibrant community.
Whether you’re a new resident at U/D, a future resident, a Northwest neighbour, or Calgarian looking to learn more about the community, we have a great Northwest guide that will let you shop, play, eat and explore.
University District is a departure for us, especially having both grown up surrounded by the outdoors. After living in residence while studying at the University of Alberta, where we first met, our attraction to apartment and condo living grew. We moved back to Calgary and shortly after began toying with the idea of purchasing a place together.
We knew living in a dynamic community with easy access to recreational options, entertainment and cultural activities was a must. When we came upon August by Avi Urban in U/D, immediately we were drawn to the development’s modern amenities, comfortable living space and elegant style. It ticked all of our boxes!
We really fell in love with U/D’s urban lifestyle concept. With all of our daily needs in easy reach, it felt natural that the community would be our home base. Well thought-out, planned to make life simpler and connected to already familiar neighbourhoods. We’re so excited to move in!
Blaze Pizza’s ingredient-forward approach is giving NW Calgary fans a reason to celebrate! Get the skinny on what to expect with its new U/D location and how to make your own pie, the Blaze Pizza way. Take a read!
From our perspective, U/D has been designed with the community experience in mind. It’s a gathering place where we’ll see familiar faces at the grocery store on a daily shopping run or while out walking their dog on the pathways.
With its open spaces, community ping pong table (which we’ll be playing plenty of!) and an inclusive playground for kids and adults to enjoy some outdoor amusement, U/D seems to encourage people to explore and have fun. We feel like we can build our social network and form lasting bonds with our fellow neighbours. These features are what set U/D apart from other communities. For us, it’s really about the experience and U/D offers one like no other.
There are so many ways to answer that question! An ideal Saturday would be getting dressed and taking advantage of all that U/D has to offer.
We were thrilled to hear that YYC Cycle would start the day with a workout class at YYC Cycle, and after working up an appetite, we would treat ourselves to OEB for a hearty breakfast. You can’t go wrong with their eggs benedict – yum!
Beyond a typical day off of going to meet with friends or doing some house chores, the best way to end off a Saturday night is to catch a movie or sit out on our balcony, in which case we’d stop at the nearby wine store. So many idyllic ways to enjoy a day off together!
Long-time NW resident, University of Calgary alumni and passionate community member Sam Lau calls U/D home. As one of the first residents of our vibrant community, Sam offers his views on downsizing and starting fresh, being neighbourly and what he loves most about living in our age-inclusive community. See what he had to say in the first installment of our Block Talk series, here!
At any stage in life, the transition of moving into a new home requires plenty of thought from location to amenities, home design to costs, and familiarity and change. At University District, our commitment to age-inclusive living and multi-family housing means that we offer a number of options for future residents to make decisions a little easier.
In 2018 we announced the Maple by Truman, an independent living complex for future residents who are 55+, and to serve the surrounding communities with an aging population. U/D is meant to balance inner-city living where there is no compromise around important amenities and services with peaceful, natural beauty, privacy and simplicity.
We sat down with Ken McArthur from Truman Homes, independent and seniors living expert, to chat about how living at Maple is suitable for a number of Calgarians who are at different stages in their life — working professionals, retirees, empty nesters, or in the golden years of adulthood — and how U/D is an ideal community for that transition.
As the saying goes, home is where the heart is. So, what makes your heart open up to a place that you can call home? More than the walls that surround you, or even the decor and design (though Truman is known for its signature elevated fit and beautiful quality), it’s a place where you feel you belong and enjoy a sense of security.
“Our guests at the U/D Discovery Centre all have a different story, background and reason for why they are looking for a new home. Not one person has the same needs or values, but I do hear a common theme that is really important to everyone – a sense of community. Not only in the neighbourhood, but in the building. And the Maple is a perfect example of building a micro-community within U/D. At only 95 units, residents are more likely to come together and get to know one another, offering support and comfort at any time.”
Ken shares that the smaller number of residents means that stronger relationships can be made, where opportunities to know your neighbour is much easier and similar to a retirement living community.
“At U/D, making connections are an important value for community building. No matter what age you are, there’s comfort in knowing that you have a support system that surrounds you. The walkability factor for the community is key to this as well because it means that our residents will see familiar friendly faces every day, whether at Save-On-Foods, the Analog Coffee shop or Cineplex theatre, and the number of other retailers that are nearby.”
Our retailer list continues to grow at University District, and there are more announcements to come. Take a look at our current list to see what you can expect, including our latest retailers like Blaze Pizza and OEB Breakfast Co.
Future Maple residents haven’t overlooked the aesthetics of their future home though. The stunning Truman design opportunities are plentiful for the one- and two-bedroom layouts, with luxury add-ons such as smart in-suite technology and custom award-winning kitchen cabinetry designs. This complex also offers full mountain view.
The topic of downsizing is often what many older adults identify with when considering their next move in life. That next step is to reduce the square footage, get rid of the clutter, and find a home that’s a bit more attainable for your day-to-day needs. But in Ken’s experience, he sees a gap in planning for the future.
“Downsizing is only one stage, but there are likely three more stages after it that many people don’t really plan for and will likely result in another move. We always hope that our next move is our forever home, but understanding all of your potential needs for the next 20+ years can be really hard to picture. I encourage our clients to get trusted family members and friends involved when deciding on the next step to gain a little perspective and help strategize.
By doing so, you can actually eliminate the second or third move down the road and really focus on living comfortably and living long-term in one community.”
Which is why the concept of Maple has appealed to a variety of demographics because residents see the different benefits it offers for later stages in life. Maple’s proximity to institutions like the nearby Foothills Hospital or University of Calgary sports complex is convenient, and for those looking for closer services can rely on the neighbouring state-of-the-art facility, Cambridge Manor, that offers supportive living and long-term care services.
With Maple and Cambridge Manor connected simply with a +30 breezeway, residents will also have access to:
“Whether or not you want or need to use the services, Cambridge Manor offers Maple residents with a plethora of options that regular condo buildings or some retirement communities don’t typically offer. It’s a nice add-on to have, especially if you’re looking for more time to enjoy your hobbies or spend time with family.”
So what does day-to-day life look like at University District for a Maple resident? It varies from person to person, and what their lifestyle entails, but Ken believes that there is something for everyone. It’s not about painting one idyllic lifestyle that caters to everyone but finding key elements about the community that will appeal to the active and outdoorsy, the creative and artsy, the grandparent and caregiver, or the community leader.
“Most of our residents at Maple have expressed excitement for the new retailers that are coming in, and the timeline for many of the first phase to be built is in sync with Maple set to open. That means less worry about where their closest bank is, needing to drive to a local grocery store for fresh produce, or finding the best spot to meet friends for their monthly lunch get-together. The convenience and accessibility are key, and more residents will probably realize it when it’s incorporated into their day-to-day life.”
Did you know that University District was awarded New Community Development of the year in 2018? Take a look here to learn more about how we’re creating our own new meaning of community and what you can look forward to.
Similar sentiments from new residents have been shared with Rhonda Zander, University District’s customer experience ambassador at the Discovery Centre. From stories of being near grandchildren and taking them to the park every day, to enjoying a coffee on the balcony at home after a morning spin class at YYC Cycle, it’s clear that the community design and vision resonates with the newest residents at U/D.
“Not only is it important to hear the feedback from our residents, but it’s reassuring to know that they have envisioned life for what it can be in our community and easily plan out their day or routine. One resident has told me that he’s lived in University Heights for most of his life, and now living in University District feels like he hasn’t moved at all because everything is still familiar and he’s near everything he loves.
Life will be even better now that he can take his bike out for the day and cycle on the pathway system, stop in at Market Mall for a quick lunch (or try one of U/D’s restaurant partners), and then heading home to read the newspaper before taking a nap.”
Whether you’re looking ahead to the next five years or 20+ years, the Maple by Truman could be a great fit for you and your loved one. To learn more about independent living options, we encourage everyone to visit Ken at the Truman show suite and our community experience ambassadors at the Discovery Centre to learn more about life in the new heart of the NW — University District.

Northwest Calgary’s rising restaurant scene brings new delicacies — like pizza — for locals and the excitement around a good slice has never been more real.
We sat down with Jared Taylor, Vice President of Operations at Cypress Five Star, Inc., the Blaze Pizza franchisee in Canada, to learn the skinny about them and how to make your own pie, the Blaze Pizza way.
“The beauty of pizza is that it’s so satisfying, whether made-from-scratch or made-to-order,” says Jared. “Pizza can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be, with the almost unlimited choices of toppings, combined with gooey cheese and different sauces. Although we prefer the sharp sweetness of marinara!”
Fresh, fast and exceptional quality are part of Blaze Pizza’s guarantee to customers, so we’re excited to hear more.
Retail excitement! Did you hear? Six new retailers, including YYC Cycle and OEB Breakfast Co. join U/D’s line up, bringing the total announced to 17! Read on to find out who else is coming to our pedestrian-friendly retail district!
In a world where artisan pizza is becoming the norm, Blaze Pizza brings something fresh to the table with its ingredient-forward approach. The custom-built pizzas appeal to novice and connoisseurs alike!
“We’re changing the way people think about pizza and how they eat it with our interactive open-kitchen concept, “ says Jared.
Back-of-the-house staff makes the dough from scratch daily using carefully sourced ingredients and a 24-hour fermentation period to produce the signature light-as-air, crisp crust that Blaze Pizza is known for.
That’s only the start of your pizza journey when you come in to dine. Choose from Blaze’s signature collection menu or build your own generously sized personal pizza. After choosing your sauce, cheese and toppings, watch as your pizza is cooked under a hot, open flame – the centrepiece of the restaurant – where pizza chefs ensure the thin-crust pies are fast-fired and ready to eat in just 180 seconds.
“We’ve been a part of Calgary’s culinary scene since 2016 and we’ve seen first-hand how this ideal comfort food brings friends and families together,” says Jared. “From gluten-free dough and vegan cheese to animal rennet free dairy and even tree-nut free pesto. It’s important for us to offer an experience where everyone can participate.”
Wine goes with everything, especially pizza! We sat down with our friends at Market Wines and got the scoop on exciting wine pairings. Take a look at their suggestions here!
Jared knows a thing or two about a good pizza and he was willing to share some industry secrets with us to help our neighbours and residents make a pizza parlour-worthy pie at home.
“Make a pizza to what your heart and taste buds desire. At home, get a little messy and have some fun because there is nothing like that first taste when it comes out of the oven, knowing that you made the pizza out of love and hunger.”
While it may be tough to match a delicious brick oven pie with a homemade pizza, you can get pretty close with some of Jared’s tips and recommendations that will increase your chances for glorious pizza night experiences with your partner, family or friends. Let’s take a look!
Don’t overwork the dough
More than just the base, the dough is what gives pizza its texture and holds together the flavours. If it’s done right, it can make you feel like you’ve been transported to a pizzeria in Naples, Italy. Overworking the dough means a flat cracker crust pizza that’s missing that delectably chewy texture we know and love. The less you work the dough the better!
Tip: Depending on whether you’re a thin-crust aficionado or a thick-crust lover, pizza dough should ideally be stretched until it’s between 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch thick.
Keep it simple
While it may seem exciting to add lots of creative toppings to your pie, less is always more! Don’t fall prey to the temptation of over accessorizing your pizza. Think instead about the balance of flavour and whatever you do, restrain yourself from being too adventurous.
Tip: Choose complementary flavours and include no more than five to seven toppings. A salty, cured meat like prosciutto goes well with a simple garnish like arugula!
Finish with a bit of sea salt and dry oregano
The right balance of spices and herbs can yield a noticeable flavour boost. For that added lift, finish your pie with a pinch of sea salt (one finger pinch will do) and dry oregano. You won’t want pizza any other way after you try this!
Tip: Depending on your toppings, consider a drizzle of olive oil, balsamic vinegar or even pesto sauce! It will kick your pizza game up a notch!
Looking for an after dinner treat? Consider a steaming cup of mint tea. We sat down with our friends at Analog Coffee to get the scoop on how to brew the perfect cup of tea. Check out their step-by-step guide.
While it’s easy to order in, biting into fresh, made-from-scratch pizza is rewarding and the process of making it is too much fun to pass up. From getting your hands a little dirty by whipping up the dough (check out All Recipes: Pizza Dough recipe for inspiration!) and grating cheese to making your own sauce and adding the toppings, there’s no shortage of personalization when you choose to forgo the takeout menu.
To make you more comfortable with the art of the pizza, here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own pie creation.
Nothing tops a freshly-made homemade pizza, but if you don’t have time to make dough from scratch, Save-on-Food’s baked brick oven pizza crusts are solid picks!
From Prosciutto, Mozzarella and Pesto BBQ pizza to Shrimp and Chorizo Flatbread, Save-on-Foods is serving up some delicious and creative pie recipes that are worth a try. We hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we do!
Some people favour a traditional marinara sauce while others enjoy a “white” pizza with a spiced olive oil or perhaps a pungent and tasty pesto sauce. Whatever your vice, go easy on the sauce! Three to four tablespoons of sauce for a personal sized pizza (8-10”) should be enough. Using the back of a spoon spread the sauce evenly around the dough. Don’t leave empty areas and don’t push too hard or you will have one sticky and sloppy mess on your hands!
It goes without saying that a pizza will be topped with cheese. Play it safe with mozzarella or mix things up and try Jalapeno Havarti for an added kick. Whatever flavour or type tickles your fancy, don’t be shy about cheese on pizza, but be sure to exercise some degree of restraint. You don’t want to sop up grease with your napkin or have your crust fall apart. Remember to go easy!
Next, top your pizza with your choice of meats. Whether you like it traditional with pepperoni or enjoy the salty taste of bacon, try to ensure even coverage to get that ideal flavour profile in every bite.
Personalize your pie with whatever vegetable toppings you want. Combine popular toppings like roasted pepper, mushrooms and sausage, or opt to try something unusual, like grilled vegetables and goat cheese pizza. The sky’s the limit! Just remember to keep it simple and let the ingredients shine.
Whether you’re home alone on a Wednesday afternoon or having Sunday dinner with the family, pizza is without a doubt a crowd-pleasing choice. With these expert tips, you’ll be whipping up hot and fresh pizzas in no time and your taste buds will thank you for it!
Say goodbye to rose gold, shiplap and stainless steel! Get ready for a whole new set of bold palettes and textures, because 2019 is bringing an exciting array of stylish ideas to transform your space.

Chloe – Minimalism isn’t just a cool ultramodern space. It’s a concept that showcases functional, pared-down design that exemplifies simplicity at its best. Clean lines and multi-purpose furnishings are synonymous with minimalism. As more people gravitate to urban living, the need for smart furnishings that are petite in scale and adaptable to different spaces is more important than ever, making this a welcomed trend that is making a big splash in 2019.
Key Colours: 90% white with pops of grey or colour in small doses.

Living at U/D is all about functionality and living the best comfortable life possible, so maximize it wherever you can! Naturally, it really depends on what your preferences are and your lifestyle, but we find that minimalism also requires great storage. To keep clutter-free and clean-cut, find furniture that does double duty like a beautiful leather bench that features compartments and transforms into a coffee table. Take a look at nearby Urban Barn in Crowfoot for some minimalistic ideas.

Chloe – Mellow hues and powdery shades like iced coffee, peach and burnt orange represent the fresh palette for 2019. Accessories and accent pieces are the jewellery of interior design. The best interiors are those that reflect you and your lifestyle. Instead of following what’s most fashionable, trawl the trends for what you love and invest in timeless accent pieces that fit your personal style.

Drapery is often an overlooked design decision but it can alter the ambiance of an interior dramatically by adding texture, fullness and a whimsical pop of colour to a space. It demands little effort and is easy on your pocket as well!

Colour can transform an interior entirely, creating a fresh and uplifting atmosphere. Whether committing to a single colour palette or blend of hues, start small. Add a floral toss cushion, or bold lampshade, or consider a patterned rug. Adding colour slowly will make the change seem less daunting.

Get ready NW Calgary, University District is entering 2019 in style and on-trend with the latest announcement of retailers, including Calgary-based Denim & Smith Barbershops and Curious Salon.
No stranger to the Calgary community, long-time NW residents Michael Rizzuto and Michael McIntosh are excited to bring their high-quality and unique stores to U/D and its neighbours, since the local brands have evolved for more than a decade.
What other beloved local brand is coming to University District? Analog Coffee of course! Keep reading here to see what Analog has in store for 2019.
With humble beginnings in nearby North Hill Mall circa 2008, these partners recognized that there was a gap in Calgary’s market for luxury men’s and women’s grooming and styling experiences. Their philosophy is simple — high-quality products and services at affordable prices with top notch local hairstylists and barbers. Never fussy, always convenient and unpretentious are their values to live by and to stay “cutting” edge.
We spoke with Michael and Michael to get the scoop on what sets Denim & Smith and Curious apart, what U/D residents and neighbours can expect, and the 2019 hairstyles to keep up with the times.
As early pioneers in the industry, Michael and Michael have curated a different kind of collective community with both brands, organically growing to over 20 locations combined since opening their first location. With their success, the partners were driven to keep the businesses hyper-local and “Made in Calgary”, a term that they proudly use.
“We’re about supporting our city and the people that really make it what it is. All of our store owners and operators are Calgarians, and we help them find talented local stylists and barbers to help build the business. The majority of our partners are previous employees too, so our customers see familiar faces and know that they will be taken care of.”
Not only does the duo invest time, education and effort into its partners and neighbourhood, as they will for University District, but they support local entrepreneurs as well, like Calgary-based beard care company Mammoth Beard Co.
“We are in the business of building relationships with our clients, neighbours, and like-minded partners, to develop this full-circle, inclusive community. We know that University District is also developed with those values as part of its vision, which is why we felt it was such a natural fit for our newest locations.
From the beginning, we’ve loved the unique and creative vision of U/D, and the diverse community and neighbours that we’ll have surrounding us. It’s more inspirational and can lead to a great stylistic experience for our team. We also feel that it will be well-connected and easily accessible for our clientele to receive high-quality and luxury products. The community truly is a hub and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.”
Retail excitement! Six new retailers will call U/D home. See which ones here.
What can U/D residents, neighbours, and NW Calgarians expect from the Denim & Smith and Curious team? Beyond fantastic service, quality styling and products, and of course, great hair, Michael and Michael share that both locations will be comfortable, sleek, and functional — a welcoming space for everyone so it’s not overwhelming. At Curious, they’ve even included a hot styling tool bar so customers can come in, test a product, and be comfortable with their purchase. It can be a big decision and a long term investment!
“Our team is trained to help you find the right beauty product that complements your hair style and type, facial hair, and skin type. Our selection is about luxury beauty and lifestyle brands that work for you, and will inevitably put a smile on your face. We’re also proud to carry more and more products that are organically and locally sourced as well.”
Perfecting that look and style that you hope to achieve won’t come in at a high cost at Denim & Smith and Curious — visit the team for a consultation and they can help you navigate between what works or doesn’t work for your hair type and face type, or which trends you should really embrace.
Trends come and go, but Michael and Michael agree that it’s all about being honest with your ability to embrace change and what kind of maintenance regime you’re willing to dedicate. Aim for something that is sustainable and works with your lifestyle so you don’t feel like you’ve lost the haircut after your next wash. Bring visuals, have a conversation, and take advantage of that consultation.
But What Style and Trends are in for 2019?
For men, it’s time to move towards a drop down fade, which means leaving your crown a little bit longer. And just in case you need a point of reference, the crown begins at the top of the head and then begins to curve downward to the back of the head. This will add some wave and texture, for some added body and volume.
Women, bobs and curtain bangs are back and making a big impact. Not necessarily for everyone, but bobs are a little easier to maintain and are a great transition into the spring.
What about colour?
Shadow roots and ombre are still very popular for women but try to soften it up with the two tones blending into each other and starting closer to the root for natural look. Tip: Curious Salon only considers it a highlight service which means extra savings from what you would typically pay!
Are lumberjack beards part of our future?
Men, it’s time to up your beard game. Time to be clean and tidy with your beard and really start giving it the proper care it deserves. Denim & Smith can teach you the basics or give you the royal treatment, but Michael and Michael promise that your beard will thank you.
Whether you’re looking for a trim or a hot shave, the University District Denim & Smith location will help you tame those unruly hairs or razor bumps. It’s never too early or too late to learn a proper facial care regime
Hair and Skin Care 101: best tip for Calgarians?
Don’t be afraid to moisturize all year long, whether you’re male or female. High-quality products will go a long way, but it can also simplify your regime. You really don’t need more than three products for your hair or face for the best results. Use a conditioning mask once a week for your hair, and regular skin care use a cleanser, lotion and toner.
Are you ready to freshen your look up, Calgary? Visit Denim & Smith and Curious to get started and we’ll welcome you with products and tools in hand once the U/D locations open in 2020.
