Looking for a futuristic way to turn off your bedroom lights and be lulled to sleep? Considering a home security system that you can monitor from anywhere for yourself and your loved ones? These and more tools and devices are part of a new, affordable and easy entry into the smart home world.
But with so many gadgets now on the market, how do you know where to start?
We met with Blair Delorme, a Calgary Home Automation Specialist and technology expert to get the scoop on simple, budget-friendly smart home projects.
Founded in 2013, LinkCasa got its start providing location analytic solutions for realtors and show homes. After seeing growth in the home technologies industry, the local company saw an opportunity to provide homeowners with a holistic and educated approach to home tech. Today, they are creating personalized smart living experiences for any home – no matter the size or budget, new construction or decades old!
Smart home automation is more than a nifty way to keep up with the latest technology. It doesn’t have to mean completely new and crazy gadgets or robots – though it can if you want. Often, it means replacing appliances and accessories with high-tech automated versions to make life easier and more enjoyable, giving homeowners peace of mind while reducing their energy use. It’s a world full of possibilities!
Let’s dive in for some expert tips and to learn how smart tech can adjust to your ideal lifestyle and help you better take care of your home!
From hues and textures to methods and materials, local design expert Ana Cummings reveals how you can create a healthy, vibrant home that strikes the right chord with great taste and sustainable design. Take a look at her suggestions to see how you can create a happy home that looks as smart as it is environmentally friendly!
Did you ever leave for work without turning down the heat on a blustery Calgary winter day? Or venture out for a summer day trip to the mountains without dialing down the air conditioning for your furry friend? When it comes to high-tech home products, smart thermostats are at the top of the list!
Unlike toilets you can talk to and mirror-mounted smart floss dispensers (yes, they do exist!), smart thermostats provide a sensible and energy efficient solution for homeowners that can be controlled wherever you are. While many modern heating systems come with a level of control built in, there is simply no substitute for a fully automated experience!
Suggested Device: The Nest 3rd Generation Thermostat is sharp and smart. Set your own schedules for heating and cooling, by voice or from your phone via their app. Nest will save you money and curb your energy use – automatically setting itself to away or eco mode when the house is empty. You could say Nest is the perfect roommate!
Knock, knock? Who’s there? With a smart video doorbell, you would already know! From live video streaming and two-way communication to Wi-Fi-enabled apps and home automation capability. Smart doorbells let you see everything at your doorstep, so you never miss a thing.
Whether you’re in the backyard pruning trees, taking a leisurely stroll with Fido at the nearby North Ponds Park in University District or halfway around the world escaping Calgary’s cooler months. Monitor your home with ease right from your phone for added security and comfort. Add as many bells and whistles as you want including cameras and even smart lock doors for those times you or the kids accidentally lock the keys inside the house.
Suggested Device: Greet visitors right from your phone or tablet, talk to delivery drivers and watch over packages while at home or away with the Nest Hello Video Doorbell. For tech-savvy apartment renters or condo owners, consider the battery-powered Ring Door View Cam. Simply mount it overtop your door’s peephole and you’ll always know who’s come knocking!

When it comes to starting a smart home, lighting is one of the simplest ways to get going. Cloud-connected switches are catching on and are an easy and efficient way to contribute to a well-lit, well-connected home.
Through season and time changes, smart switches will make sure you’re never caught out in the dark. When at home, easily change the mood from “Game Day” brightness to “Movie Night” twilight with the touch of a button. Smart switches make it possible for you to take full control of your home lighting, while reducing your energy use, thwarting would-be burglars and putting an end to the all too familiar old light switches that you fumble for in the dark. Turn yourself on to a new way to light your home!
Suggested Device: Lutron Lighting Control smart switches are some of the best in the home automation industry. Control your lights remotely, set schedules and even automate them with a video doorbell to turn on certain lights when motion is detected. Best part? They are easy to install and use, seamlessly integrate with other smart home products, and come in a wide variety of colours to match your interior design scheme — white to grey to gold!

Leak sensor smart devices are thirsty for action! No more worrying about appliances leaking. Sensor technology will alert you if your home springs a leak, appliance malfunctions, toilet clogs or a sump pump seizes so you can take action quickly.
Easily monitor any water-related appliance or fixture by simply adding remote sensor probes. Place it under a sink, by a toilet, or even in your basement and receive alerts on your smartphone. Intelligent security puts peace of mind at your fingertips so you can travel with ease, enjoy Sunday brunch at Milestones, or soak in the sun by lazing down the Bow River!
Suggested Device: Keep pumps and pipes in check with the Samsung SmartThings Leak Sensor. Reliable and simple to install, these wireless sensors can prevent costly water damage by catching leaks right away. With SmartThings Leak Sensor, you’ll receive alerts on your phone and can even set connected devices to turn on or off when moisture is detected.
If you’re creating your ultimate smart home, chances are you’ll need a home automation hub. It’s a one-stop solution where you can control all your smart gadgets from one simple place. You could say it’s the brain of your smart home!
Imagine a home where lights brighten when the sun is setting, the garage door opens as your smartphone approaches your home or the kitchen lights dim, the fireplace turns on and radio tunes to a classical music station for date night. It’s all possible with a smart home hub! Know that the lights are off, doors are a lock and the temperature is set to your preference, all without having to get up. It’s convenience and comfort in a clever package!
Suggested Device: Pick a smart hub that fits your needs. If you’re seeking something simple, get a wink smart hub. However, if you want something more advanced, consider the Samsung SmartThings Hub. This home automation gadget works with a wide range of devices and lets you connect all your smart products to one place, giving you total control through the SmartThings app.

Blair knows a thing or two about smart home devices. He has you covered with these helpful tips to help you stay connected while at home or on the go.
Educate yourself
Once you have an idea of what home automation tools fit best with your budget and lifestyle, do your research. Read customer reviews, warranty structures, tech reports, buyer guides, and independent reviews before purchasing a smart device. This will save you time and money in the long run!
Start small
When designing your smart home, start small! Choose one or two devices – smart thermostats, smart speakers or lighting control are a great place to start as they can be the easiest and most functional to integrate – and then consider additions.
Don’t choose devices by price and brand
Whether you’re an early adopter or a seasoned pro, do your research! Before you get started, learn about the products in-market and what devices work well together. Many times people purchase devices based on price and brand only to fall prey to a system that doesn’t play nice together. Remember expensive isn’t always better and if the price is too good to be true, it likely is!
There you have it! Whether it’s a smart thermostat, doorbell, lighting system, leak detection solution or smart appliance, automated homes give you the convenience and peace of mind that only comes with being connected.
Looking for a smart home device? Shop for a wide selection of products at your nearby home hardware or electronic store including Best Buy, Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot or Amazon. For those seeking an extra dose of tech or need help with the process, LinkCasa’s qualified technicians are always on hand, ready to help you get connected!
It’s undeniable that our modern industrial world has blessed us with many things — literally! No matter how conscious and conscientious we are, preventing stuff from entering our lives and our homes presents a struggle to maintain neatness. Clutter-free living is possible with a fresh perspective and some tidying tips from the pros!
Once on a cleaning-and-tidying mission, we may instinctively respond with a desire to rid items that do not serve us anymore — a childhood Scrabble game, high-waisted Levis, a copper plant pot inherited from grandma — which makes so much sense on the surface. If you have too much stuff, out with the old! However, when we spoke with local certified KonMari consultant Helen Youn, we found out that the instinct to delete and purge may not be the best way to start tidying your life.
“This process is not about getting organized, rather it’s about finding more joy in life,” Helen told us. “When you feel like your home is a little out of order, generally people are looking for things they no longer need, whereas we say don’t think about what you’re throwing away, but think about what you actually want to keep.
Sound counterintuitive? Maybe! But join us and see how we can tie the whole concept together, shall we?

KonMari isn’t the only way to streamline your life. Downsizing your space may help you make some decisions in a similar vein. Take a look here!
Let’s start from the beginning. For many people, they may have been introduced to KonMari indirectly through a Netflix special that popped up on many screens a few months ago. When Tidying Up with Marie Kondo debuted, her distinctive philosophy of sparking joy in the objects around you started to gain traction. That journey took her many years of mastering the art of organization. Now, her school of thought on tidiness is named after her (Marie Kondo – Kon Mari), and consultants around the world are embracing the power of those ideas. Helen shared some of the roots of Marie Kondo’s story when we spoke.
“Marie Kondo grew up in Japan, and was obsessed with organizing ever since she was a kid, then reached a point where she asked herself ‘Why am I always organizing? If I’m so into organizing shouldn’t my space be organized already?’ The story goes that she was organizing and tidying and going all out, and she was so frustrated that she passed out. When she woke up, she felt like a voice spoke to her and she made this realization that she’d been doing it wrong the whole time. She realized she’d been focusing on choosing what to discard rather than choosing what to keep.”
There it is again! “What to keep?” How can we get rid of stuff if we are focusing on keeping things? This critical change was a big focus of our conversation and Helen gave us some informative examples to help illustrate that point.
“If you were cleaning out your closet and you took out what you no longer wear, then maybe you would just grab the most obvious stuff, like things that are broken, or things that are gifted but the designs are hideous, or something you got so long ago that you haven’t worn it in years. But that doesn’t let you look at your things with certainty. Whereas when we use the KonMari method, we take out ALL the clothes from your closet, then tell people to choose what they’re keeping, the decision becomes different and people choose what they care about.”
The catchphrase to take away from KonMari or Marie Kondo or even Helen Youn is “sparking joy,” but it’s an easy one to take for granted. It sounds so earnest and carefree that it may come across as too simple. After speaking to Helen it’s clear that to focus on joy is simply the easiest way to communicate the core difference between KonMari and “conventional” thinking about how to organize.
Take the method Helen told us about earlier, to clean closets. Rather than taking out what clearly doesn’t work for you anymore, take out ALL the things and start to think critically not about why NOT to keep it, which is a negative “minus” type mentality, but rather why you SHOULD keep it.
“I think too many times when people are looking at things, people are worried about other aspects,” Helen shared with us. “Things like how much money they spent, or if someone will be upset if they throw something away, or obligation, or fear like “what if I need this one day”. With KonMari we advocate focusing on the now, like “this is the item that brings me joy right now, I really love it, I want to keep it.”
It’s easy to see why there is success to be had with that idea. When fully embraced, KonMari is not just a strategy, it almost feels like a positive philosophy. If people truly think about the ways that the things around them spark joy in their lives, then they are automatically reorienting their brains towards their best possible life.
Putting things aside! Here’s a throwback to local ways to spark joy and excitement into your life. Whether you’re emtpy-nesters in search of new adventures, or looking for a fun day with family and friends, our Northwest Community is close to some of our city’s most exhilarating activities. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the obstacles and matters we want to fix to lead our best lives! Sometimes we forget to think about what our ideal life really looks like.
Helen shared one of her tactics: “The first thing I do with my clients is sit down and talk about what they enjoy doing, what they want to do more of, what is in their life that will bring them the most joy. At the end of the day, people are creating a house to support that vision.”
“Before you start tidying, think about ‘What is the life that will bring the most joy’?” she continued. “A lot of the times people are so stressed about their home that they can’t imagine what they’re going to do! Spending all their time stressing about it instead of taking action!. After you go through this method, your house is going to be complete and everything is going to spark joy! So what are you going to do with that time? Have a clear picture of what you’ll do with your time will really help with the process.”
So really, it seems like KonMari is about finding the inner core of who you are and what you want to do, which really does seem like a philosophy.
If someone can picture their ideal life, they have fresh meaning and intention to build a future around. This helps decide which objects in our homes are actually important. The ideas Helen and Marie put forward buck impulse and strip everything away so that we can build a life made up of what we truly care about. Scrabble anyone?!

With summer around the corner, kids, parents and grandparents are heading outside to savour Calgary’s long sun-filled days. Before you pull your bike out of the garage or rent one from the nearest bike shop, here are three quick tips to follow to stay safe on two wheels.
Bright clothes and reflective gear are your friends! Colours such as neon yellow, lime green and orange are going to be much more noticeable to drivers than the traditional shades worn day after day. It’s best to avoid biking at night, but if you go out after dark or at dusk or dawn, be sure to wear reflective gear!
Tip: A roll of reflective tape is great for adding more visibility to a helmet, jacket, bike, or any other gear you may want to make more visible and can be purchased from your community home hardware, department or sports store.
Whether you prefer a water bottle, sports drink or a hydration backpack, make sure you pack some fluid before jaunting out on your two-wheeled adventure. Coconut water is a refreshing alternative if you’re craving a more flavourful, healthy beverage. It will liven up your tastebuds and is a natural refresher! If riding with little ones, be sure to bring snacks. They burn a lot of energy and their little legs can wear out fast!
Tip: Freeze bottles the night before. A bottle of ice-cold water makes a refreshing drink, especially when riding under the blazing, hot sun. For a flavourful citrus twist, forgo ice cubes and add frozen lime and orange slices. They make the perfect substitute!
Wearing a helmet that fits well is important. It should fit snugly around your head, but shouldn’t be so tight you are uncomfortable. The side straps should form a “V” shape just below your ears and always be fastened. Whether you’re only riding a short distance or spending an afternoon taking in the sights on bike, wear a helmet every time you ride!
Tip: Don’t own your own bike helmet? Purchase one at a local NW department store or rent one at University of Calgary’s Outdoor Centre, Sports Rent or Bow Cycle and Sports! Remember, helmets have a shelf life so it’s better to be safe than sorry and buy or rent one instead of reaching for that dust-covered helmet hanging in the garage.
Whatever way you pedal the city, biking can take you to the biggest tourist attractions and the most out-of-the-way corners of Northwest Calgary. Whether you’re new to the sport or a pro, there are a myriad of trails to explore our neck of the woods. Take the leap and start your two-wheeled adventure!
University District’s Noteworthy in the Northwest series focuses on dynamic and compelling individuals and organizations from around Calgary’s Northwest, offering insights across a range of topics and each contributing to describing the spirit, opportunities, and legacy of the Northwest.
We sat down with Dr. Jan Jaffer, managing partner of TREC Dental and a Northwest Calgary native, to speak about its future U/D dental clinic, the diverse retail and housing options our thriving community adds to the Northwest’s evolving landscape, and tips to keep smiles vibrant, healthy and beautiful!
For me, inspiration struck close to home. Following in my parent’s footsteps and joining the dental industry was a natural progression.
After graduating from high school, I moved to San Francisco to join an accelerated dental program. Upon completion, I found myself right back in Northwest Calgary building on the great reputation of my parent’s practice in Ranchlands. In 2004, I was fortunate enough to open a second clinic in the neighbouring community Royal Oak.
Over time we found the right people that wanted to work with us to help them do better dentistry. Born was TREC Dental! We help dentists manage their clinic so they can focus on what they do best – taking care of patients without worrying about the sometimes messy details of the business!
Jason Evanson, CEO for Ronald McDonald House Charities Southern and Central Alberta (RMHC) says the community spirit in Northwest Calgary is alive and well. We couldn’t agree more! Keep reading here to see what he has to say about the power of community, what it’s like having U/D as a neighbour and ways you can get involved with their incredible organization!
Northwest Calgary has always been home. My parents settled down in Ranchlands when I was two years old after opening their first family dental practice right here in the heart of the community.
Thirty-eight years and 15 clinics later, our flagship practice remains our most successful because of the long-lasting relationships we’ve made with our neighbours. We have patients who have been with us for 35 years!
Even as we have grown, the support we have received from the Northwest for our line of work – treating kids, parents and grandparents, making sure to take care of the entire family — has been remarkable! That’s what we love about this area – its diversity and strong family feel! There’s a welcome mix of residents. From new community members who are putting down roots to long-term families that have grown up in the Northwest and continue to live here.
Long-time Northwest resident and semi-retired community leader Teresa Woo Paw spilled the beans on life as an empty-nester and what U/D adds to Northwest Calgary. Click here to read all the reasons why she loves our corner of the city!
It’s incredible! University District is shaking things up and people are taking notice. What once was an empty field across from Market Mall, will now be home to be a vibrant destination that’s making its mark on the city.
When you think about it, U/D is really a community within a community. It offers an inner-city lifestyle to those wanting to be in the heart of it all, next to eclectic bistros, boutique shops, everyday conveniences like U/D Dental, cafes and a grocery store.
I couldn’t be more excited to be part of a community that’s embracing the future, yet is mindful of its neighbouring communities and roots.
NW Calgary fans have a reason to celebrate! A variety of new retailers, including Freshii, YYC Cycle and OEB Breakfast Co have joined University District’s line up and there’s still more to come! Curious to see which other beloved brands are joining our retail community in spring 2020? Find out here.
Kindness in action! Dr. Jan Jaffer and fellow team members delivering free dental care to rural communities in South America.
There is so much opportunity at U/D. It’s an innovative, forward-looking neighbourhood – a place for young families to thrive, single adults and couples to grow into and ideal for seniors looking for settle down – that’s surrounded by existing established communities like Montgomery and Varsity. You could say it’s a hub of inspiration, connection and energy that knits everyone together!
To me, it’s this diversity and youthful spirit that makes U/D such an appealing location for our upcoming dental practice. Being nestled in an area where you can build meaningful, long-term relationships with new patients from different age groups and backgrounds brings something special to this community that you don’t come across every day.
Did you know Dr. Jan Jaffer was recently awarded the Leaders in Practice for Giving Back Award in Dentistry by Oral Health Magazine? From overseas dental missions to supporting local charities like the Women’s Shelter and Samaritans Purse. TREC Dental is committed to community and their connection runs deep. Read all about Jan’s recent recognition here!
Having a healthy mouth and smile doesn’t take much time and effort, as long as you use the right oral care products and are mindful of your daily habits. Here are my go-to tips for cleaner teeth and healthier gums:
Know when to replace your toothbrush! Invest in a new toothbrush or replacement head for your electric or battery-powered toothbrush every three months to maintain proper oral hygiene. When in doubt, look at the bristles! If they are frayed or bent, they become less effective at cleaning your teeth. Toothbrushes with stiff (not hard!) bristles do the best job!
Good technique is key. A quick wash of your bristles isn’t enough to banish leftover food particles from your late night snack or mid-day sugar feast. A poor job of brushing your teeth is almost as bad as not brushing at all. Take your time! Use a combination of gentle, circular motions and short back and forth strokes and always remember to brush your tongue. No one wants bad mouth odour!
Drink water after every meal and throughout the day. It’s not only the best beverage for your overall health, but it can also help wash out leftover residue from sticky and acidic foods and beverages in between brushes. Drink up!
As our modern world seeks to balance progress with responsibility for a sustainable future, forward-thinking people and businesses, like those at University District, are marrying everyday choices about how they approach life and work with a greater conscience for the health of our planet.
Small gestures include the decision to use a refillable container for your daily coffee, riding a bike to work, swapping out traditional light bulbs for LED alternatives. Bigger decisions include choices like living near where you work or purchasing a home designed with the environment in mind.
Sustainable design decisions can be found in all types of industries, including home building and home design. Since we all love our homes and spend quality time there, our home is a great place to show we care about the planet by striking the right chord with great taste and the greater, natural good in mind.
Healthy homes and communities create a healthy planet. Can making our homes eco-friendly lead to a better life everyone and the planet? We asked a local design expert, and the answer is yes!
We connected with Ana Cummings for some ideas about everyday sustainable design. Ana has been a champion of the harmonization of home and nature for more than a decade, and in that time has served as President of the Alberta chapter of the Decorators’ and Designers Association of Canada, lent her expertise to CTV’s Homes & LIfestyles Canada, and continues to act as an advisory board member for popular home resource website Houzz.com.

Be sure to check back with us in June for an upcoming feature about Helen Youn, Calgary’s first and only Certified KonMari Consultant. From bedroom to bathroom, kitchen to curio cabinet, we have tips, insights and steps to organize your home life will further improve the way we live in the space we call home!
The shape of a vase, the texture of a blanket, the colour of a feature wall are some of the decisions that, when made with care and sensitivity to nature, can contribute greatly to an eco-friendly home.
This principle of thoughtful design creates an opportunity for spaces that are more dynamic, vibrant, and pleasant to be in. And it’s easy to achieve. As the saying goes, it’s like a walk in the park!
As a health and wellness advocate, Ana maintains a good diet and eating habits and this philosophy and lifestyle choices extend into her career as a designer, her workspace, her home life and home design decisions made with clients, too.
“The same way that I maintain my health, I approach my home design,” Ana explains. “If you put good things in your body and into home alike — and take consistent care — they will both provide greater satisfaction and enjoyment over the long term.”

So what are some concepts that Ana is seeing put into use that reflect that principle?
“Have you ever seen a living “green wall” in a modern office lobby, commercial space or outdoor application?” she asks. “This is called “Biophilic Design,” which is the addition of greenery to generate feelings of well-being and connection to living things.
“The results are absolutely stunning and have created an entire design movement. Adding plants to our homes and offices has exploded in popularity in recent years. It may be a little Bohemian, but there’s nothing dowdy about it.”
From a single-stem orchid to a full, lush palm, a cheerful cactus on a sill to a hanging fern that evokes a woodland moment, living additions to your space can add a range of green hues, a pleasurable fragrance, and the feeling of vibrancy to where you live.

“Eco-design simply IS exciting,” she says. “While the term itself may need a refresh, today’s technology is allowing great things to happen in this field. Take for example hardwood flooring that filters the air via embedded Titanium Dioxide nanoparticles activated by light and air movement!
“But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Eco-design can also be as simple as recovering your grandmother’s sofa. Upcycling is another term used for items taking on a new life as something else.”
We love that!
Now is the season the brown outside turns to green. You can reach new heights of eco-design on your urban balcony or deck too with these 5 designer approved tips!

From the hues to the feel, it almost goes without saying that fabric and materials from natural sources are more inherently pleasing for all of us whether our tastes run traditional, modern, eclectic or shabby chic! As useful and efficient as materials like laminate flooring, linoleum and others are, they just can’t compare to the fascinating, textural, warm feel of materials derived from biological sources. Think cozy cashmere throws, crisp linen sheets, rich wood tables, natural cork decorator items, clay pottery!
“I love working with any kind of natural organic fabrics; linens, cottons, wools and silks,” says Ana. “Natural grasscloth wallcoverings are a hot commodity and more popular than ever. No VOC or low VOC paints are a must. Stone, marble and hardwood for surfaces are as easy and luxurious as ever. Bamboo and cork flooring options have come a long way as well.”
When a room or space incorporates materials that our bodies resonate with easily, our minds and bodies relax and tension releases. A large number of small choices in terms of the types of objects and materials we keep in our space can make a huge difference.
So where can people find these types of design elements?
“There are so many choices! Northwest favourites like Planet Organic, Sunnyside Natural Market and Real Deals are great choices for wholesome food options and small household items. Beyond that, there’s always Goodwill, Re-Store, consignment stores, garage and estate sales for used items. If you can’t find it locally, online works well too.”
Just like nature presents its beauty in many ways, so do eco-design choices. If you’re looking for creative design ideas, drop by the Discovery Centre and check out our new Esquire showsuite, where design choices are rich and varied! As good as it is for our environment to use products closer to nature, it’s as good or better for our own mental and spiritual well-being. Homes in places like Calgary need to be insulated from nature because of winter, but that separation from the natural world isn’t always ideal. Embracing earth-focused home design brings us closer to organic, natural, comforting materials and objects. Embrace change and nature at the same time for a better-designed lifestyle!
A vegan renaissance has taken hold in Calgary, making the city home to a growing treasure of restaurant alternatives. Copper Branch is one such gem that’s bringing it’s plant-based, sustainable power food into the mainstream.
We met with Nicholas Roberson, head chef for the Montreal-based company, to get the inside scoop about its chef-inspired, 100% vegan menu. The company has been whipping up made-to-order, quick-serve meals to customers across Canada since 2014.
“We’re proud to be part of a movement that’s revolutionizing dining by leaving meat off the menu,” says Nicholas. “There’s a treasure trove of alternatives such as nuts, seeds, grains, beans and legumes that are just as substantial and satisfying as meat.”
Whatever you choose – pasta, sandwich, salad, smoothie, soup – fresh, healthy and high quality is the Copper Branch customer guarantee. We’re excited to get the skinny on their exciting vegan menu, along with some tips and even a recipe recommendation for those excited by the idea of dabbling in plant-based cuisine!
NW Calgary fans have a reason to celebrate! Six new retailers, including YYC Cycle and OEB Breakfast Co. have joined U/D’s line up and there’s still more to come! Curious to see which other beloved brands are joining our thriving retail community? Find out here.
The goal at Copper Branch is to empower, energize and make people feel their best with dishes that celebrate the ingredients in style. So when it comes to developing new dishes, chef Nicholas and his research and development team spend months perfecting great tasting menu items that blend classic culinary techniques with fresh, local products.
A UK native, Nicholas was drawn to the culinary world at an early age, finding inspiration in his mother’s passion for cooking and sharing food with others. Nicholas quickly ascended to various kitchen roles before embarking on a worldwide culinary adventure for over a decade.
Now as head chef of Copper Branch, he’s bringing his love for great flavours and wholesome ingredients to the menu. And you can tell!
“When you dine at Copper Branch, you don’t feel like you’ve settled for a vegan fast-service restaurant – you feel like you just chose a delicious one,” he notes.
The Zucchini Noodle Coppernata holds its own with its wonderfully pleasing sweet and sour flavour profile, and dishes like the Thai Basil Pina Colada Smoothie and Chico Salad leave you completely satisfied.
But the fan favourite, the Copper Burger, can’t be beat with its beet-based patty — a slight crunch from the brown rice and sunflower seeds, a subtle sweetness from caramelized onions, and a hint of spiciness from the mustard. It’s no wonder it’s one of their best selling dishes!
Whether you’re planning a special dinner at home or visiting a buzzy new restaurant, picking the right wine to accompany your dish can make a good meal great! We sat down with our friends at Market Wines and got the scoop on inspired wine pairings. Let’s take a look at their suggestions!
Nicholas knows a thing or two about hearty and delicious vegan meals and he was willing to share some tips and recommendations that will have you savouring every last bite!
Simple doesn’t always mean boring when it comes to great food. Beyond bright colours and fresh flavours, the beauty of vegan food or any well-prepared meal lies in its simplicity. The secret to bringing out those amazing flavour? Focus on the ingredient! Whether it’s from your own backyard, urban garden, or the nearby farmers market at Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre, there’s nothing quite like the taste of freshly harvested veggies and fruit. Berries are more intense, kale more tender, tomatoes sexier, and squash sweeter!
Tip: Buy fresh ingredients at the height of their season for maximum flavour and prepare them in a way that lets them speak for themselves.
A splash of smoked paprika, a dash of lemon zest, a sprinkle of cinnamon! When combined correctly, spices make for some incredible flavours that can add life to even the most mild-mannered vegan dish. If you’re looking to elevate your cooking (vegan or not), don’t shy away from your spice rack. Instead let the flavours of your ingredients shine through with the use of herbs and spices to transform ordinary recipes into exciting culinary experiences.
Tip: Top your dish off with a dab of olive oil — from hummus and pasta, to even cakes. A touch of olive oil can really bring out the flavours of a dish.
Each stage of the culinary experience is wonderful but for many, cooking a vegan meal from scratch can be an intimidating affair. Be not afraid! Whether you’re cooking for one or for the whole family, it’s simpler than you think. Find your recipe, be prepared in advance and get to know your ingredients. If you love curry, make sure you have the right spice mix. If you’re craving a rich risotto with pumpkin, get a good quality pumpkin and add butternut squash for texture and flavour.
Be bold and try something new. You might just discover a whole new world out there, where spices are abundant and things like soybean curd can be delicious.
Tip: If you’re in need of some inspiration or are seeking to embark on a personal culinary adventure, consider taking a class at Chateau et Cuisine in NW Calgary. French, Thai, bread-making classes – there’s plenty of mouth-watering options to choose from.
Looking for an afternoon or evening treat? Consider green or mint tea! We sat down with our friends at Analog Coffee to get the skinny on brewing the perfect cup of tea. Check out their step-by-step guide here.
The creamy combination of sweet mangoes, tangy yogurt, followed by the lingering sweetness of matcha is University District favourite! This Indian inspired concoction is an exotic, vegan spin on a timeless classic that’s utterly refreshing. It’s a match(a) made in heaven!
Thin it out as a smoothie to kick-start your morning routine or pair it with some richly spiced Indian food like Channa Masala or Aloo Gobi. However you prefer it, it’s incredibly simple to make and oh-so-satisfying. Let’s take a look!
Ingredients

Wonder whether a smaller home is right for you? Downsizing is a hot topic these days for a reason. Both the young and young-at-heart are inspired by the freedom a smaller residential footprint promises. From adventurous nomads who want to loosen the ties of unnecessary possessions to Baby Boomers who want to live a more active and maintenance-free lifestyle, many Calgarians are deciding now is the time to make their move.
The decision to scale down from a larger home to a smaller one can be hard, but University District is here to help!
No matter what your phase of life, identifying the tell-tale signs that it’s time to make the move – and understanding the freedom that comes with smaller-space living – can help make the decision. Whether your goal is to travel more, put some extra money in your pocket or spend weekends with family and friends, here are five sure-fire signs that may point you in the right direction.
Are you ready to make the move from a house to a condo or are simply curious about the upside of condos and multi-family homes? Find out why making the right residential move is so important by exploring our Homeowner’s guide to buying: Moving from a house to a condo.
Keeping a well-maintained larger home has its rewards, but can be time-consuming and overwhelming. Whether it’s fixing broken roof shingles, shoveling snow, updating design, or other jobs outside and inside the home, the upkeep can leave the best of us exhausted. Or perhaps physical ailments mean you’re simply unable to do everyday household tasks.
Downsizing can be mentally and physically liberating! With fewer rooms and smaller spaces, you’ll spend less time, energy and effort cleaning and maintaining your home. That means you’ll be able to spend more time on hobbies, recreation, travel or just plain resting! With so many great activities to enjoy in the NW who doesn’t want to make the most of some free time.
The transition of moving into a new home requires plenty of thought from location to amenities, home design to costs and familiarity and change. Whether you’re empty nesters, working professionals or retirees, Maple is suitable for Calgarians at different stages in life. Click here to find your groove with life at Maple!
Sometimes a major life change is a sign that it’s time to simplify and start fresh. From retirement to overcoming the loss of a loved one, unexpected changes in employment to a sudden desire to chase after that long-postponed dream, your lifestyle and surroundings may be impacted.
At University District, some of our residents may have made the move to a more suitable home size to reduce expenses, enabling them to experience life in a new way with more time, money and freedom. A common theme with residents has been that they wanted to live in a more walkable neighbourhood with easy access to amenities such as restaurants, boutique shops and green spaces to take their kids, grandkids or four-legged companions for some much-needed playtime. Whatever the reason, downsizing can help you refocus your needs to think about what suits you best.

Do you have multiple guest rooms collecting dust? Or a three-car garage with one car and bicycles that haven’t been used in years?
It’s a possibility that you’re starting to feel that your spacious home is too much for your current needs. Bought at a different time in your life, it may have accommodated for larger family gatherings, kids aplenty, steady routines with work life, or the family pet. If times have changed and you’re starting to realize that those extra bedrooms and living spaces have become dust-collectors or storage spaces, it’s usually a good indication that it’s time to move on and find a functional home that works with your current lifestyle.
So what really matters to you? It’s time to create a comfortable home environment where you can relax and live life the way you want to! A key reminder is that your home isn’t a storage space, but a living space, courtesy of Helen Youn, Calgary’s own KonMari organization consultant. Having a larger home doesn’t necessarily mean that its a better home; it really depends on your needs and how to live more joyfully.
Stay tuned for our upcoming interview with Helen as we explore the KonMari method and how it applies to everyday life.

If you find yourself mesmerized by travel commercials or dreaming of exploring exotic locales, chances are you’ve been bitten by the travel bug and downsizing may be the right choice for you! Traveling the world is easier when you downsize to a maintenance free property.
Whether that means taking a trip to the Maldives, packing up on a whim for a local day adventure in the mountains, or a much-needed and long overdue visit with distant grandchildren, the lock-and-go lifestyle makes it easier to indulge wanderlust. There’s no need to ask a neighbour to collect the mail, check for leaks or mow the lawn while you’re away. You can travel without the worry of who is caring for your home. Now that’s a vacation we’re on board with!
As you grow older, your needs change. The time may come where high-maintenance landscaping, a steep driveway and climbing the stairs in your two-storey home may become too much, especially if you have limited mobility or are at risk for falls. It may be harder to move around the home the way you used to.
Downsizing will give you the opportunity to choose a home with greater accessibility. That means you’ll be able to live in your home longer, aging in place with ease. Whether you choose to move to a smaller, one-level property, an apartment-style condo, or a townhome, downsizing can make daily life easier!
Have you heard of Capella? It’s Brookfield’s newest addition to U/D’s housing line up and is the next big thing on the home front. Drawing inspiration from southern California, Capella features a collection of contemporary condos and a luxurious selection of single-level residences. Interested in learning more? Take a look here.
Empty nesters, retirees, seniors or people moving from a suburban home to an urban dwelling all face the challenge of creating a new living space with limited room for furniture, accessories, clothes and items that are near and dear to our hearts.
Downsizing, while bittersweet, doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Our recommendations will keep your stress levels down, your focus up and downsizing a snap! Let’s take a look.
If you’re thinking about downsizing, ask yourself: does size matter? Will moving into a smaller home feel like a step forward because you’re simplifying your life? Will you miss some important features in a more spacious home? How will life events affect your living in a smaller home?
Tip: As you look for a new home, make sure it and the community suit your needs for today and well into the future. After all, if you’re going to take this important step, make sure it’s the right time to “rightsize” your home!
If a downsize is definitely in your future, it’s important to plan ahead. Trying to squeeze the move into a week can be overwhelming, emotionally and physically. A better plan: start the paring-down process six months to a year before your move!
Don’t be afraid to start over. Be bold! A new space is an opportunity to start fresh by trying out a different look than your last home.
Tip: Pre-plan the layout! Look carefully at the floor plan of your new space to really get a feel for where you can place your furniture. This will avoid wasting time and energy moving belongings and items that won’t fit.
Downsizing a lifetime’s worth of belongings for a move can be a difficult task that will cause a gamut of emotions. It will force you to prioritize your possessions and hang on only to what’s most meaningful and what you really need. There will be many moments of indecisiveness, but it can be a very freeing experience!
Tip: Plan a monthly declutter session or spend 15 minutes a day going through belongings so the task is less daunting. It makes a big difference when it comes to organizing your possessions.
With spring comes fresh warm air, morning birds singing and spring cleaning! Need help? Stay tuned for our piece on spring cleaning tips and trends and what to do with all that stuff. Coming to you soon!
No matter what sort of property you’re sitting on, there comes a point when you need to take a step back and decide if downsizing is the right step for you. Be honest with yourself and you may come to realize that downsizing means you can age-in-place and finally enjoy the freedom you seek when the time is right.
