There is no escaping Father Time! But we can all take steps to live our best lives as we get older. Tell us more about assisted seniors’ living at University District.

“Whether it’s lifelong learning or accessible healthcare or simply being part of a special neighbourhood, University District respects the needs we all face as time marches on!

“On the housing front, Cambridge Manor opens for occupancy in June 2020. This innovative aging-in-place living option is built in collaboration with the impressive and impactful Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging for Research and Education. Dignity and the pursuit of happiness make the mantra for this 240-unit complex. Beyond dining and recreational diversions, the therapeutic care offered to seniors here supports wellness and brings comfort and security to the people who live here. Their families gain peace of mind too.”

“Cambridge Manor will offer multiple levels of care to support aging in place,” says Brenda Strafford Foundation CEO Mike Conroy. “It’s one of the few facilities to offer the continuum of aging in place with supportive living and long-term care services.”

Cambridge Manor is connected by a +30 covered walkway to Maple by Truman, an innovative independent living condo development with a la carte services through Cambridge. This integrated model means residents can stay connected through proximity to their loved ones as easily as they can to the features and amenities they care about. This way, family members of all ages can stay connected in University District as needs and lifestyles change through life.

No matter what stage of life, there are homefront options for most people here. All walks of life! Are we right?  What kind of residential housing will U/D have?

“Inclusive and truly urban, the backbone of University District features a diverse array of homes to choose from,” Maureen says. “One-, two- and 3-bedroom condos, townhomes, brownstones, apartment-style residences for purchase or to rent are all in close proximity to each other and to our integrated, curated community design features — the parks, shops, trails, restaurants, theatre, playground, pond and the University itself!”

“So what does this mean for University District’s residents? It means a closely-knit neighbourhood with genuine neighbourly experiences. It means community connection, ease of access to the lifestyle choices you care about. It means convenience, expansive views, maintenance-low living.”

Smart home automation is more than a nifty way to keep up with the latest technology. Whether it’s a smart thermostat, doorbell, lighting system, leak detection solution or smart appliances, automated homes give you the convenience and peace of mind that only comes with being connected. We met with the expects at LinkCasa to get the scoop on simple, budget-friendly smart home projects. Let’s take a look at their suggestions

Rendering of the future Central Park in University District

Once people choose their perfect home, fashion it with furniture and settle in, what kind of amenities will the community have once they step outside?

The heart of any neighbourhood is its green, natural space, and Maureen speaks to that commitment from University District.

“Location, location, location!” she says.  “There are 12 kilometers of interconnected pathways with a total of 40 acres of green space spread between six parks, two ponds and the three-acre central park at the heart of the community,” Maureen explained.

“The central park is the heart of the space, and the cultural centrepiece is nine blocks of curated retail encompassing entertainment, dining, grocery, pharmacy, pet conveniences, home and fashion, and day to day living.

“Our namesake, the University of Calgary, is a defining jewel of the community, so expect all of the concerts, sporting events, education and engagement one would expect from a world-class university minutes from their door.

“The community’s hub, functional since day one, is the Discovery Centre, which stays alive and vibrant throughout the growth of the community. Stop by and get a feel for what’s happening, what’s to come, and what you can do to get the most out of your daily life in U/D.”

Teaser: So many developments have already been announced for our thriving community, but October will bring even more exciting news about University District’s three-acre Central Park. Stay tuned on our social channels!

Let’s get down to the brass tacks! With every home they bring to the neighbourhood, our builders are bringing heart and uniqueness to U/D, but who are these builders and what are they building?

From Brookfield Residential and Avi Urban to Truman, the builders transforming University District are innovative, community driven, and dedicated to pushing design and engineering to a higher level. Integration, connection, and quality of life are common themes for them all.

Brookfield Residential’s Ivy welcomed its first residents in July 2018. It’s townhomes straddle the best of central urban life with the creature-comforts: attached garages, private front entrances, centralized amenities, and up to 2000 square feet of space.

Meanwhile, its landmark development, Capella, presents a revolutionary single level concept with luxury design elements and privacy! Capella will contain both urban condos and single-level estate residences, all crafted with the express goal of exceeding expectations.

Truman’s Noble is another active building, with many of its residents calling the place home for well over a year.  As Maple by Truman nears completion, University District is excited to welcome its second wave of residents to fully appointed suites designed for independent seniors living.

Beyond Maple and Noble, Truman’s third contribution to U/D’s urban landscape is Esquire. Streamlined, premium design, green and healthy living add to the Esquire appeal. The building minimizes carbon and pollution output and maintains its warm and engaging aesthetic feel at a more than reasonable price. Its suite of amenities is also impressively appointed: typical features like landscaped green space is complemented by a 24\7 gym, dedicated bike storage, spin and movement studios, a workshop area, and a pet spa to keep your four legged pals so fresh and so clean.

Fresh, ergonomic design defines Avi Urban’s August, as natural green space, bright open designs, and connected, amenity rich living combine into one intentionally designed package.

Teaser: With its stunning foliage, pumpkin-spiced treats, and mild sweater weather, what’s not to love about autumn? Well this year, Fall is an especially magical season because we’ll be announcing another builder development in the heart of U/D!

Celebrate Sandwiches and All Their Makings

Scores of up-and-coming restaurants are surfacing in University District. We have news about a future culinary dining destination dropping anchor soon on the Northwest’s expanding foodie landscape.

Its name? Press’d Sandwich Shop!

What some people think of as a lazy desk-lunch, or an easy slap-up dinner, we think of crafting a spectacular sandwich as an art form. This is why we are excited to connect with Scott Gordon, president and co-founder of Press’d to get the inside scoop about how this Alberta homegrown business is taking the humble, wholesome sandwich to new heights using fresh, Canadian-sourced ingredients in surprising ways.

Lunch just got more exciting!

“Sandwiches are the ultimate grab-and-go food”, says Scott. “They’re simple, they’re portable and they’re perfect for picky and adventurous eaters alike.”

From classics we’re all too familiar with to popular creations like The Bird, be prepared to have your taste buds teased and your senses heightened thanks to their freshly baked in-house bread. Let’s take a look at what we can expect to experience with its upcoming location, as well as some expert tips to enjoy your sandwich in all its glory and even Press’d Sandwich Shop’s recipe for their number one seller – the California Club!

Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, dinner – even dessert – you can never go wrong with a big old fashioned sandwich. Until Press’d opens its doors in University District, there are plenty of nearby restaurants and bistros to satisfy your craving. From the Angus Beef Panini at Euphoria Café to the Hot Beef hoagie and Joe’s Special at local mom and pop shop, Peppino’s! Who’s feeling hungry?

Press’d Livens Up Lunchtime

Like sandwiches themselves, its story is a Canadian classic. A tale set on University of Alberta’s basketball courts and inspired by a local artisan sandwich shop in Arizona, Press’d launched its flagship restaurant to Edmontonians in 2010, and has been gaining popularity ever since from those enjoying its fare on park benches, in boardrooms and everywhere in between.

“We left promising accounting careers to give people what they wanted – the perfect sandwich,” says the Edmonton native. “Before opening our doors, we spent a year testing recipes and learning to bake the kind of bread worthy of the sandwiches we envisioned.”

From classic favourites to inspired gourmet creations that customers have never tried before, Press’ds unyielding respect for high-quality ingredients shines through. With each bite, you can taste real intention and care in the meals they prepare.

It’s hard to forget the dreamy and oh-so-creamy avocado that makes the well-executed and inventive Green Goddess a fan-favourite among vegetarians. And the Cubano? Marvel at its sweet and tangy zest thanks to the melt in your mouth pulled pork and chimichurri mayo.

“For us, sandwiches are more than just a common-thread dish. They are stacks of rich flavours and wholesome ingredients that unite people, cuisines and communities around the world.”

Sure it has top-notch double-deckers, as well as wraps and salads that are light and fresh, but Press’d has built something more than an Instagram-worthy lunch hot spot.

With its commitment to supporting local producers, Press’d is building a dynamic Canadian brand that caters to everyone.

“The diversity of people – from seniors and youth to students and professionals – is one of the key reasons we’re thrilled to join University District’s thriving retail community,” Scott says.

With three locations already in Calgary, University District will be home to its fourth.

“From its focus on quality and sustainability, to creating inspiring destinations for all to enjoy, having a location in U/D was a natural match,” he adds. ”We believe it will become a bustling destination where all walks of life can connect over the neighbourhood sandwich shop.”

Whether you’re planning a summer BBQ or hosting a casual party with a DIY sandwich bar, pair your meal with some delightful and whimsical beverages that are sure to refresh as well as impress. The Art of Sandwich Making: Tips, Tricks and Ideas!

There’s a reason it’s called “building” a sandwich. From balancing flavours and textures, moistness and crunch to choosing bread that will make each element shine and constructing them so that every bite is harmonious. Sandwich making is a craft!

Whether you’re hoping to step up your sandwich game or troubleshoot some common pitfalls, these expert tips will have you thinking “outside the box” when it comes to this lunchtime staple.

Stave off sogginess

There’s nothing worse than a soggy mess at lunchtime. If you value soft, fresh bread, consider packing moist ingredients like cucumber, tomatoes and egg salad separately. Assemble right before eating by using cheese or meat as a layer between the bread and your wet ingredients. It’s a little extra work but it’s worth it!

Tip: Avoid pairing moist fillings with soft, fluffy breads.  If you do, you’ve got a recipe for a sponge, not a sandwich. The moister the filling, the drier and denser the bread should be.

Bread matters: Get creative!

Rice is to sushi, as bread is to sandwiches, which is why its important start with the freshest, best quality bread you can find from your neighbourhood bakery, such as COBS Bread Bakery in Crowfoot Centre. Look past the traditional white loaf or its healthier brown counterpart and choose flavour profiles that will be a treat for your senses, like sundried tomato and chia fruit loaves, or go exotic with baguettes, buns and pita bread.

For the more adventurous, try baking your own bread! Go beyond the basic grains, ryes and sourdoughs by adding cheese, spice and even sauces to your bread mixture.

Tip: Consider toasting your bread. It not only helps manage sogginess it brings out the sweetness of bread. Remember, any bread you’re using for a sandwich should be delicious enough to eat on its own!

Experiment with new flavours

When it comes to building a wholesome, flavourful hoagie, the possibilities are practically endless. Skip the traditional tomatoes and opt for roasted peppers and sautéed onions to provide the perfect foil for heavy, rich ingredients. Add a zest of fresh crunch by using cabbage, peppery arugula or even fennel in place of lettuce. Plant-based and meat-loving foodies will enjoy all those layers of deliciousness!

Tip: Beyond your typical vegetable fare, ignite your palate with mouth-watering flavours such as the sweet and salty combination of juicy apples and a tangy balsamic glaze. Forgo the classic ham. Instead try savoury rosemary ham, zesty salami or an Italian dry-cured ham (prosciutto). It will satisfy your taste buds and make you wonder how you existed on plain ham sandwiches.

Up Your Hoagie Game: Press’d California Club Sandwich

Say goodbye to your mundane ham-and-cheese and opt for a meal that is full of flavor, texture and colour with this twist on a classic BLT.

Made with fresh homemade guacamole and slices of crisp, savoury bacon, we can’t gush about this sandwich enough! Whether you’re stacking for one or a party of eight, this sandwich will be a hit. Let’s dive in!

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces of roasted chicken
  • 2 slices of bacon
  • 1/4 cup of freshly made guacamole
  • 1 slice of Swiss cheese
  • A slice of tomato
  • 1-2 leaves of Lettuce
  • Mayo

Step 1: Crisp your bacon

Over medium heat and without overlapping, add your room temperature bacon to a pan. Turn the strips as needed until they reach the desired crispness. Drain on a paper-towel-lined platter and set aside.

Tip: For evenly cooked strips, don’t preheat the skillet. Place your bacon in a cold pan allowing the fat to render slowly, giving you consistently cooked strips of bacony goodness!

Step 2: Prepare your guacamole

In a small dish, prepare fresh guacamole using ripened avocados and set aside. Check out All Recipes for its quick and easy guacamole recipe. It will take you less than 10 minutes to make!

Step 3: Stack your layers

Toast two bread slices until golden. Once crisped to your liking, lay them side-by-side. Spread a tablespoon of mayo onto one slice, followed by your roasted chicken and a slice of Swiss cheese. Spread the freshly made guacamole over the meat and cheese.

On the other slice of bread, stack 1-2 pieces of lettuce and one slice of tomato. Crisscross two slices of cooked bacon over the tomato. Flip the BLT side over onto the roasted chicken side to form a sandwich. Cut in half and voila – ready to devour!

Tip: To keep your ingredients perfectly stacked, push a sandwich pick into each half before slicing.

Whether you prefer something as sweet and simple as PB & J or as savoury and unique as grilled peach with brie, the humble sandwich can be anything you want it to be. Best part?  No cutlery required!

The Happening Boutique Provides DIY Skin Care Techniques

Soon enough, the glory days of summer will fade into a warm, pleasant memory, and the dry, chapped reality of winter will set in once more. We don’t mean to alarm you, we just want you to be prepared. With warm weather, sunshine and vitamin D comes much happier, rejuvenated skin, but as we all know sometimes happy complexions take some extra help to come to life.

Here at University District, you probably already know we’ve got a meticulously curated batch of retailers taking root in our community, so we have only the finest, most exciting business coming to provide your boutique, skin, nail and hair care.

Curious Salon has been making waves all over Calgary, especially in the Northwest with their North Hill Centre and Tuscany Market locations. Its blend of positivity and community engagement are a perfect reflection of the higher priorities we all share at U/D, so when we came together it was meant to be!

Style All Around

Michael Rizzuto is the founder of Curious Salon, and not by coincidence the co-founder of Denim & Smith Barbershops, another style retailer that will be physically linked to Curious when the storefront is built. We caught up with him to hear about what Curious is about and catch a few DIY skincare tips along the way.

Michael’s role encompasses nearly anything on a given day at the salon, but he’s been in charge of the higher-level elements of the salon and Denim & Smith like branding, franchisee matters, staff coaching, and even the occasional haircut when the situation demands.

So when it comes to the University District salon, what can residents and visitors expect?

“We are really focusing on an open concept,” Michael begins. We want to reflect University District as an inviting space for people to connect with what we do, a community within a community, really. Having our uniquely branded Denim & Smith Barbershops co-existing with the salon within the same space is a concept that’s being well received, and we are excited to introduce that to residents and neighbours of U/D.”

Community Minds Think Alike

The marriage of Curious Salon and University District is more than apropos. Where U/D is dedicated to conscious lifestyle integration and grassroots community connections, Curious Salon has also been contributing to that same community in its own fashion.

Part of its own efforts to integrate and support causes they and its customers care about is to donate for causes near and dear to their own community of staff and clients, causes that keep Calgary ticking. The Alberta Children’s Hospital is much loved by U/D residents already, but some causes and charities farther afield also define their unique character:

  • Calgary Soup Sisters provide food to the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter
  • The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association builds and maintains top tier outdoor recreation facilities in West Bragg Creek
  • Minor Hockey Calgary ensures young people can keep active and engaged in their communities.

Let’s Get To It!

Curious Salon’s eventual University District location will be in the heart of U/D’s highly walkable retail district, along the main meeting place upon University Avenue, not far west from where Central Park is currently being built. The unique, open concept design blending Denim & Smith and Curious will naturally invite pedestrians to book an appointment or shop for products.

“Our luxury retail selection, educated staff and service value are unmatched anywhere in Calgary,” Michael explains. “Our stylists appreciate our balanced focus, and our emphasis on work-life balance. Happy staff and world-class salon products are a big part of why we’ve separated ourselves from the pack and stood out from the crowd.”

With the connected. walkable lifestyle University District encourages, Michael and the rest of the team can expect a significant uptick in regular customers as the community grows and takes root. “Our regular customers have a great chance to get deals with us. Anyone in our rewards system can make 10% back on any retail purchases made in-store.”

DIY Beauty From Within

The list of culprits that can cause dry, itchy skin is a long one. From daily hot showers and Calgary’s wicked winter weather to a lack of natural oils in your skin as you age. The good news is that your kitchen, not the drugstore, may hold the secret to achieving healthy, vibrant skin!  The experts at Curious shared three super simple DIY skincare ideas that will keep your skin feeling fresh, supple and nourished as fall and winter come down the pipe. Let’s take a look!

DIY: Purify your skin with a morning refresher

Fall can be a time for new routines and new schedules. Our bodies, in particular our livers, can find this taxing with all those stress hormones, meals on the go, and just maybe a little more coffee then lazy summer months! Our tip: purify!

Upon waking every morning start your day with a glass of warm (as in room temperature) lemon water. Squeeze it fresh or use the pure stuff from the bottle.

Try it for a week before you decide, but chances are you will feel the difference from day one! It helps clean out what your body worked so hard to get rid of while you slept.

DIY: Exfoliate the natural way

Exfoliation isn’t a magic formula. You just need some organic material with enough rough edges to take off that first layer of skin. Add to it some smooth, soothing fats, salts and sugars and teasing out your skin’s natural health and moisture couldn’t be easier!

Exhilarate your nose as much as your skin with a coconut coffee scrub. Simply mix a cup of coffee grounds (used or unused) with a cup of cane sugar, stir that into ½ a cup of cool liquid coconut oil, and scrub away! If you want to add a special flavour to the whole experience, sprinkle some cinnamon or add a drop of vanilla to really soothe your senses. Thanks to The Coconut Mama, you can find the recipe here!

DIY: Hydrate your skin with a soothing mask

Do your skin a favour and prepare it for the protection it will need during Calgary’s cooler months. A fresh little face mask using natural everyday ingredients can go a long way to moisturizing and rejuvenating your skin, sealing in all the goodness your body has!

First, purée half and avocado. Mix it with a teaspoon of olive oil. If your skin is drier than others, mix in a tablespoon of honey. Apply and leave on your face for 15-20 minutes, then wash off with warm water.

Do this once or twice a week and those healthy fats and oils can seal in all of your body’s natural healing properties!

A Chapter a Day: Tips to Get You Reading

From working every day and rushing around trying to get errands done, to studying time and daily distractions like our phones, kids and grandkids. Finding time in a busy schedule for reading can be tough, but U/D is here to help with some simple tips to help you get into the routine. Before you know it, you won’t be able to stop reading!

Tip 1: Find a quiet space

Whether at a nearby café with comfy chairs or a room in your home with a chaise to relax in, find a place where you can curl up with a good book without the distraction of your phone (turn it on silent of airplane mode!), a television, music or noisy family members or roommates.

Tip 2: Set time aside

It doesn’t have to be hours a day! Start by getting into a pattern with your reading – before bed or a few pages at lunch – by putting aside ten to fifteen minutes each day.

Tip 3: Try short stories or poems

Short stories and poems are a great way of making progress, without feeling intimidated by the hundreds of pages in front of you. Dip in and out at your leisure when you have a few minutes to spare!

Tip 4: Have a library day

Even cheaper than a bargain bookstore is a library! Turn reading into a date night activity by making a trip to the library. On the way home, stop at your neighbourhood café for a warm mug of tea or hot chocolate, a sweet treat for two and a stimulating conversation.

Tip 5: Pick something you think you’ll like to read

Find books that grip your interest and keep you going. Even if they aren’t literary masterpiece, go for books that tell a great story and are fun to read. There’s nothing like getting lost in the pages with a good book!

Tip 6: Make it fun!

Don’t take it so seriously! If you enjoy reading at sunset or with a cup of joe curled up in a comfy chair or by acting out the story with your kids for some added excitement, do it! Have fun with it and make reading time your favourite time of day.

Whether you decide to embark on a literal journey with a new novel, reread an old favourite or decide to dabble in a whole new genre, when it comes to reading, explore everything the world of literature has to offer. You may not like everything you read. You just have to find what’s right for you!

The whipped sugar, lime and egg froth bolsters the complex, earthy character of the drink, adding balance to the sour citrus of this favourite sip.

Tip:  Instead of Angostura bitters, sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon on top of the foam. It’s an unexpected but delicious flavour profile.

Make it into a cocktail by adding a splash of vodka or even replace some of the water with sparkling wine. Thirst-quenching!  Nothing quite says summer like the fresh flavour of strawberries and an icy glass of lemonade.

Tip:  Give this summertime classic some elegant flair by infusing it with fresh herbs like basil and for some extra flavour, create a lemon sugar and use it to rim the glass. It adds a tangy-sweet bite to this bubbly drink.

One of the most popular aperitifs in Italy, it’s no wonder the cocktail is making a comeback across the globe. It’s as easy to make (no fancy equipment required!) as it is to drink, delicious as it is refreshing. It tastes like summertime in Italy.

Tip:  Whip up a batch, pack it in a Thermos and enjoy a picnic outing and with family or friends at Confederation Park.  Serve your Aperol spritzes with Mediterranean inspired appetizers, such as stuffed olives, burrata and crusty bread, fresh fruit or even olive oil drizzled popcorn!

Fruity ice cubes – who knew?

Don’t let boring ice be the downfall of your beverage. Make a splash with ice-encased fruit, giving your drink extra flavour and visual appeal. From melon and pomegranate ice cubes to chill your martini, to Tequila strawberry-lime cubes for your lemonade. Inspired ice cube creations will spruce up even the dullest drink! Remember to use distilled water for clearer ice cubes.

It’s all in the glass!

From wine glasses and flutes to martini stemware, mule mugs and old-fashioned  low-ball cocktail glassware. Different style of drinks require different styles of glassware. There’s no one-size-fits-all glass for drinking. Don’t stock every style, rather base your decisions on the types of beverages you enjoy most because the fit-for-purpose vessel will only enhance the experience.

Don’t limit your creativity

Gone are the days of cherries soaked in syrup! From exotic fruits like pineapple and mango, herbs like rosemary and lavender to homemade infused syrups and fresh-squeezed juices. The possibilities are endless. This oh-so-refreshing Rose Sangria Supremo is a perfect seasonal twist on the traditional Sangria with its lighter, tangy-sweet finish. The infusion of seasonal berries creates a wonderful fruity flavour sure to become a solid crowd-pleaser. It’s the perfect midsummer tipple – fresh and zesty – that has a non-alcoholic version too! Let’s take a look.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of dry Rose (such as Les Fleurines)
  • 1 cup blanco/silver Tequila such as (such as El Jimador)

  • 2-3 limes sliced
  • Sparkling water
  • Mint sprigs

Step 1: Mix liquid ingredients

Looking for a summery drink the whole family can enjoy? Try the non-alcoholic version of this fruity and fresh sangria. It’s just as delicious and will be a definite hit with the family. Right-Size the Right Way With This Downsizing Wish List

Has the time come when mowing your lawn brings you dread, climbing up and down stairs is a hassle and shovelling your way through another Calgary winter is already giving you the chills? You may be ready to downsize – or “right-size” as we call it – your lifestyle!

While downsizing offers the opportunity to embrace the inevitable change, pull up the stumps and find a new home that will suit you and your needs to a tee, it’s also about finding a community where you can thrive, make connections and comfortably age in place.

To point you in the right direction, University District has come up with a wish list of what to consider when in search of new digs in an age-friendly community. Let’s dive in!

When it comes to downsizing, the first step is to know when to make the move. Whether your goal is to travel more, save money or spend weekends with family and friends, these five tell-tale signs can help you decide if it’s time to downsize.

Access to Amenities

When rightsizing to your ideal home and community, don’t forget about your surroundings. It’s a matter of ensuring your community not only gives you access to the amenities you seek, it should bring you joy as well!

If golf is your obsession, a community near a country club or golf course would be ideal or if your passion is yoga, seek out neighbourhoods within close proximity to yoga studios and fitness facilities.  Do you have children or an energetic fur baby that needs to be walked twice a day? You will want a neighbourhood that offers a playground nearby and a park to walk your four-legged pal. The closer you can be to the things you enjoy, the less time wasted commuting and the happier you will be!

Tip: When considering the move to “rightsize” look for developments that offer several lifestyle amenities such as a workout facility, communal workspace, grilling stations and more. You can use them all you like without worrying about the upkeep! Esquire by Truman, located in the heart of U/D, is one such development. From a pet spa and DIY workshop space for handy types and hobbyists to a movement studio, 24/7 gym and spin studio. Esquire is like no other, boasting unique amenities that create an enjoyable daily living experience!

Meaningful Connections: A Social Network

Strong social connections and a sense of belonging are important at any age or stage in life. Consider neighbourhoods that embrace opportunities for socialization. This includes community centres or social groups, playgrounds, parks and creative activities that draw like-minded people, such as communal art projects, cooking classes and more.

If you have a penchant for lifelong learning, look for a homestead with nearby colleges and universities, such as our neighbour  University of Calgary,  where they offer free education for seniors (65 and older) or where you can tutor young, bright minds. Whatever stimulates your mind and fuels your body, choose a community where you can meet new friends, find new interests and embrace your new lease on life with gusto!

Tip: From yoga and golf to leisurely strolls and badminton, these days there’s no shortage of activities to keep people stimulated. However, it’s more fun to share these experiences with another! Check out the PlayCity App, which connects people through the joy and power of play and builds real relationships for people in the Northwest and beyond.

From building a walkable neighbourhood that puts pedestrians first, to offering independent seniors living condos such as Maple by Truman that allow us to stay close to the people that matter most – University District is bringing NW Calgary a community that’s built for life. Find out how our commitment to building a community of age-inclusivity is shaping U/D’s growth! Read on here

Nearby Medical Services

Aging in place is more than choosing a home close to a hospital or walk-in clinic. While this is important for healthy aging, it goes beyond that. When looking at communities, find a neighbourhood with easy access to an adequate number of medical practices, family doctors and therapy clinics, too.  This is especially crucial if someone in your family requires frequent and regular medical attention. You can even take it one step further by checking out the quality of these facilities including their expertise and that of their team. Peace of mind has no price tag!

Tip: If access to health services is important to you, run a quick online search for medical clinics, hospitals and even chiropractic and physiotherapy practices in your preferred communities, or refer to our blog for a little extra help. Remember to look at neighbouring communities as well!

Car Free Transportation

It’s not what you think. Today, tossing the keys often means freedom! While it may be hard to imagine not having a vehicle to help you get around, there may come a day when physical challenges or vision problems will affect your ability to drive. It’s important to look for a community that is walkable and pedal-friendly with everything within strolling distance and has nearby access to public transit.

Nowadays with services like Uber, carshare and bikeshare, people can make a choice to live in a pedestrian-oriented community, giving them the freedom to explore their neighbourhood, meet and connect with neighbours and build life-long memories and relationships along the way.

Tip:  Before you take the leap and go car free, start with a plan! Examine your car usage, assess alternative options and commuting alternatives. Try going car-lite by leaving your car in the garage for a week. Do all your local errands by foot, bike or via public transit see how you do. Consider it a test drive without the car!

Going car-lite or car-free means more opportunities to explore your surroundings feet-first or on two wheels. University District is close to some of Calgary’s most beautiful rides with distant mountain views and tree-lined paths. We met with Andrel Reid, former chief idea officer with NOMAD to get the scoop on NW routes the whole family can enjoy. Check out his suggestions here

Adequate Accessibility

Being part of a community means more than just living within its borders.  It’s being able to buy groceries at the local market down the street, chatting with neighbours while taking Fido out for his evening stroll, or taking the kids or grandkids to the community playground where everyone can play, regardless of age and abilities. However these opportunities are only possible for everyone in a community if they are accessible.

Think about the level of accessibility you or your loved ones require. From walkable streets, diverse housing options and affordable home-care services to wheelchair ramps into local shops and widened park paths and sidewalks for those with canes, walkers or wheelchairs. Accessibility is key when considering the move to downsize. It can be the difference between living in a community and truly experiencing and thriving in it!

Tip: Come to University District for an afternoon of play at our Northwest Commons Park, a Playcore National Demonstration Site that includes features to attract and delight fun-seekers of all ages and abilities. From play areas for different age groups to sensory areas and special features like a community ping pong table, there are playful opportunities for everyone!

Whether you’re considering to “rightsize” your life or are in the throes of it, think deeply on what is important to you right now – and what you will need in the years to come. It can be an overwhelming, stressful and emotional experience, however doing a little research at the outset can make the process go more smoothly so you can focus on your next chapter – living in a comfortable and stylish environment that meets your health, wellbeing and lifestyle needs!

Please Your Pets with a Warm, Fuzzy Welcome Home

Whether or not you made it to our 2nd annual big furry festival, Tails & Treasures, by now you know University District loves to keep everyone and their dogs  active, happy and engaged. From the pet spa at Esquire to keep pups squeaky clean after a zip through our urban dog park, to the dedicated dog run at Aria, these are just a few ways we’ve prioritized healthy active lifestyles for you and your best friends.

It’s not just about walks to the park, though. Indoor time with your dogs and cats is critical, and if you happen to be working with a smaller home space you’re probably used to creative ways to keep your home in sync with your personal harmony and your four-legged pals.

To stick with the theme of pets in honour of our signature Tails & Treasures event this month, we linked up with Chloe Leung and Jennifer Madsen, resident  interior design experts with our builder partners Homes by Avi and Brookfield Residential with their tips and suggestions for some quirky ways to keep your space primed for you and your furry.

Harness Your Space: Smart Choices for a Full Home

As we all know, life is about doing the best we can with what we’ve got. When it comes to designing a smaller home, the power of light is your friend. Mirrors reflect light and create the instinctive feeling of space, breadth, and pop in spaces that don’t have as much real estate to work with.

On that same note, you’ll want to focus on lighter palettes and tones for your small space. Big, dark coloured furniture and decor pieces can suck up space and light in your already limited area and show off unwanted sheddings from your pooch or kitten.

“In addition to a little fur camouflage, whites, light greys, and light taupe colors can help make space feel more spacious,” Jennifer Madsen told us. “Bringing in pops of colour within the accessories, art, furniture, and the odd feature wall can help add interest, while maintaining an open and bright feel. Adding too many ‘loud’ or dark colors can overwhelm the space, making it feel cluttered and small.” A colourful pet bed that complements your palette is one great way to incorporate colour in your pet accessories too and is easy to change out if your style changes!

And on that note about double function design? Chloe continues: “To maximize space in smaller units, furniture choice is essential. There are many pieces that have a double function, while incorporating a nice design aesthetic. An example is an ottoman with storage. On the outside it is cozy and soft, while the interior is structured to store many things from board games and extra blankets to knick-knacks and your fur baby’s toys.” What better way to keep them from underfoot?

“Another example of a dual function furniture piece is the TV console. Instead of buying a piece specifically for a TV, a narrow bar table is a great way to add extra seating to the space. Adding a few barstools to it provides extra seating for meals, while grounding the TV above. To add even more function, a bar table with storage would be optimal as it provides a place for any movie/game consoles to be set up for the TV.”

The Northwest makes it a breeze to discover new byways, trails and neighbourhoods for you and your canine.  Check out this guide to NW bike rides the whole family (pooch included!) can enjoy.

Fur Baby Life: Only the Best for Your Four Legged Fellows

We mentioned a couple of dog-oriented University District amenities earlier, and one of the more convenient aspects of living with dogs is they’re relatively easy to entertain. A leash, except in the urban dog park, and some mobility, and you’re off to the races – Rover’s usually happy with a walk to the dog park and some healthy sniffs to scope out the world.

Cats are a trifle more complex, of course. They love their home zone and routine, but they also need their slinky, sneaky, particular methods to entertain themselves. Jennifer had some clever ideas along those lines as well: “A great way to keep pets entertained in a condo is to add play spaces within the design of the space. For cats, a designated ‘climbing wall’ could be a great way to keep them active and out of things they should not be climbing on. Stylized shelves that are strategically placed could be used for this purpose if it adds to the design of the space.

Not to forget the puppers of the world, Jennifer had some plans to enact there too. “ For dogs, a nice soft rug and a bin full of toys can help to keep them entertained. The rug not only helps define the design of the space, but the boundaries of the play area as well. A nice basket with the toys can add to the décor of the space, while maintaining the function as storage. Having the basket of toys available for the pets to retrieve, encourages them to entertain themselves when their owner is unavailable.”

“Generally speaking,” continues Jennifer, “When pets are sharing the space, consistency and balance is key. Matching the pet’s things (bed, dishes, etc.), to the colors and style within the space, makes the room feel cohesive and well put together. This helps to eliminate any feeling of clutter that could overwhelm the space.Pet accessories have so many options these days that finding something that matches your style is generally easy and fun!”

Proper materials for your furniture and decor will also go a long way toward keeping your home fresh and clean with your animals in tow. Chloe Leung explains: “When It comes to having a pet, having the right finishes in your home is very important. Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring, or LVP, is the most durable for animals as it does not scratch as much as hardwood and it is harder to see scuffs that were caused by your pets. Dogs just need a comfy couch or a nice rug in a space to curl up on. There are lots of fabric and material options out there that are durable and stain resistant that make clean up a breeze.”

Tips for Better Brunching from OEB Breakfast Co. Soon to Open in the NW!

Raise your mimosas because Northwest Calgary’s booming culinary scene will soon welcome the wildly popular all-day breakfast and brunch spot – OEB Breakfast Co.! The future University District retailer is serving up some of the most satisfying and unique brunch selections in the city, giving early morning munchers and afternoon brunchers a reason to be egg-static!

We sat down with Mauro Martina, Founder and CEO of the Calgary-based company, to learn the skinny about its chef-driven concept that’s elevating standard breakfast fare with local ingredients and unbridled creativity.

“To me, there are no limitations,” says Mauro. “For nearly 10 years we’ve been creating a farm-to-table experience using locally-sourced products that burst with flavour and tantalize your senses. Even our high-quality, free-run, dark-yolk, Omega-3 eggs are produced especially for the restaurant!”

From familiar classics for the purists to inspired creations like the Gold Digga breakfast poutine, be prepared to line up if you’re hungry for an over-easy-breakfast at this local fave. We’re excited to get the scoop about what to expect with OEB’s upcoming location, along with Mauro’s tips and recipe recommendations for a heartier morning meal to start your day off right. Let’s take a look!

Jump-start your day! Whether you need a morning wake-up call or afternoon pick-me-up, our friends at Analog Coffee share their tea suggestions. To help you get through the day, see what they have to say about brewing the perfect cup of tea. Step by steep!

Going Gourmet: Elevating the humble egg

While nutrient-rich eggs and fresh, nourishing ingredients are OEB’s obsession, the bustling but always mellow dining destination’s commitment to quality extends far beyond the kitchen.

“Everything we do is for the love of food,” says the father of two. “We put passion on your plate and we do it with wholesome ingredients that taste great and support local producers and farmers wherever possible. From our service and food to the vibe, we’ve created a cozy, chic environment where patrons always feel welcome and uplifted.”

Originally from Italy, Mauro trained and worked as a chef in cities around the world, but it was his desire to elevate traditional breakfast dishes into the most exciting culinary experience of the day that led to the creation of a chef-driven restaurant.

Flexing his culinary creativity, Mauro is bringing his passion for fine dining and love for great flavours to OEB’s staggering array of creative selections that push the culinary boundary.

“I think local, but I cook global,” he notes.

Menu highlights include a Waterfowl Benny with smoked Peking duck breast and porcini mushroom-truffle ragu on a butter croissant, and dishes like Eggs, Lox & Caviar and the French Toast Trifle with Meyer lemon curd, market berries, pistachios and torched pavlovas. So much flavour!

Among the most beloved meals at OEB are its signature breakfast poutines. Soul in a Bowl is a fan-favourite and for good reason. Made with duck-fat french fries, Quebec cheese curds, poached eggs, double-smoked bacon and topped with browned-butter hollandaise, this stands out as a highly original dish for decadence!

With three locations already in Calgary, including its always-busy flagship restaurant in Bridgeland, University District will be home to its fourth location.

“Living close to Market Mall, I’ve been eagerly watching University District take shape and come alive,” Mauro says.  Everything about this thriving community speaks to OEB. From its creative vision and focus on sustainability to its commitment to connectedness.

“I knew U/D would be an ideal spot for our next location and we can’t wait to connect Northwest Calgarians with the OEB experience.”

Breakfast Buzz: Tips for Heartier, Healthier Morning Meals

Chef Mauro knows happiness starts with a nourishing breakfast. Take your taste buds on a culinary adventure with some expert tips that will turn the most important meal of the day from mediocre to eggstraordinary!

Up your breakfast game with quality ingredients

Maximize food’s flavour and nutrition with fresh, seasonal ingredients! From Honeycrisp apples for your hearty apple almond oatmeal to the peppers and courgettes for your breakfast casserole, high-quality ingredients are bursting with nutrients and flavour.

Tip: Shop more often! Smaller more frequent shopping trips to your nearby grocery store or farmers market at Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre results in fresher ingredients.  If you are looking for new inspiration, stop by the Cochrane Farmers Market. It’s just a hop, skip and jump away from U/D!

Simple doesn’t mean boring!

Great food does not have to be complicated. In fact, some of the best dishes are the fuss-free kind that let quality ingredients shine through. Strike a balance and use fresh herbs and seasonings for optimal flavour! Remember, keeping it simple doesn’t mean you have to skimp on satisfying taste.

Tip: Simplicity — whether you are preparing a mouth-watering breakfast hash or baking a cinnamon teacake — can be the key to an impressive offering. Choose recipes with only a few ingredients!

Local ingredients add a burst of flavour

Serve freshness every day with delicious local ingredients! Look for plump, ripe produce that’s at the height of flavour and nutrition. Right now that means cherries, berries, squash, carrots, cucumbers, microgreens and more.

Take advantage of seasonal produce. Summer is tomato time! Use that bounty and make extra marinara sauce for your Italian baked eggs and freeze the rest to use later in the year. A tomato in December can’t compare to sun ripened, juicy July tomatoes right off the vine. That’s fresh!

Tip: Try a seasonal ingredient in an unexpected way. Consider juicing a sweet potato. You will be pleasantly surprised by its garden-fresh, lightly creamy and satisfying flavour and sustenance.

Get Cracking: Scrambled Eggs with Sour Cream and Chives

What’s reliable, steadfast and all-around awesome? Breakfast of course! Chef Mauro is giving scrambled eggs, a quintessential breakfast staple and University District favourite, an appetizing twist.

Whether you enjoy them plain, garnished with finely chopped herbs and a sprinkle of Monterey Jack cheese, or dressed up with caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms, scrambled eggs are one of the most versatile breakfast dishes to prepare.  Gather your friends and family and treat them to a feast for the senses with Mauro’s 15-minute, simple and oh-so-rich scrambled eggs recipe. Let’s take a look!

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon unsalted butter
  • 2 stalks fresh chives
  • Kosher salt
  • Fresh cracked pepper

Step 1: Combine your ingredients

In a bowl, whisk together your eggs, sour cream and chives. Consider using OEB farm fresh eggs. They are rich in flavour and Omega 3’s!

Tip: Impress your guests or loved ones by making your own sour cream using buttermilk and heavy cream! Simply add two tablespoons of buttermilk to every cup of cream. Leave your covered milk mixture on the kitchen countertop for 1-2 days and voila – homemade sour cream!

Step 2: Start cooking

Melt a teaspoon of butter in a non-stick pan or skillet over low heat. Pour your egg mixture, add your favourite meat or smoked fish and gently stir until eggs are cooked to desired consistency – fluffy and slightly undercooked (about 1 to 3 minutes).

Step 3: Season your eggs

Remove from heat. Sprinkle your eggs with a pinch of Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to enhance the flavour profile. If you’re feeling adventurous, try smoked salt for some added depth! Enjoy your eggs with a side of freshly baked bread or fill a tortilla or toasted bagel for a quick and portable breakfast.
