Breaking Ground on the Future of Senior Living in Northwest Calgary
June 14, 2018
Another exciting page of University District history began May 17! Last month’s groundbreaking ceremony of Cambridge Manor brought the much-anticipated Northwest Calgary senior center one step closer to becoming a reality.
Our builder partners, Truman and The Brenda Strafford Foundation joined in the festivities with shovels poised and smiles photo-ready to mark the moment.
During the event, we enjoyed the opportunity to explore with our partners why University District is such a good fit for them, what people can expect to see developing with the Cambridge Manor monthly fee based assisted living and long-term care accommodations and Maple residences, which are now available for purchase with pre-sale pricing from the 290’s – both set to open in late 2020.
How will life improve for those living here and for the families, friends and neighbours who care about them and their needs that inevitably change with age?
Did you miss our panel discussion in May about how communities shape the way we age? Take a look at our recap where discussions ranged from the cultural and importance of food choices to the medical innovations and community resources in Calgary and hot topics in between.
WHAT’S EXCITING AND UNIQUE ABOUT CAMBRIDGE MANOR AND MAPLE?
BRENDA STRAFFORD:Cambridge Manor and Maple will both offer true “aging in place.” Providing the full spectrum of options – from independent living to assisted long-term care – they are situated in a community smartly designed so that all one needs to live well is available nearby and easy to access.
The two developments will be connected by a Plus 30 walkway so amenities — like recreation, dining and even education and volunteer services — can be shared with residents between the two buildings.
What’s exciting is that we are introducing the newest independent living residence in Northwest Calgary, the first of its kind in the area.

TRUMAN:We’re embracing the innovative and important concept of living where independent, assisted and long-term care living are physically connected.
This means a husband and wife, or even a senior couple with elderly parents can enjoy independent living while remaining as close as possible to their loved ones who require more care.
Keeping family, community and amenities close can help us all age well and U/D is bringing Northwest Calgary a community designed to improve opportunities for health, connectedness and participation. It’s exciting to not only see a community come together that’s built for all stages of life but to be part of its development.
Keynote speaker Dr. Robert Thirsk, formerly the 13th chancellor of the University of Calgary joined us on the momentous occasion.
HOW CAN LIFE IMPROVE FOR A SENIOR WHO LIVES INDEPENDENTLY TO BE CONNECTED TO A SENIORS CARE FACILITY?
BRENDA STRAFFORD: Residents of Maple will have access to a vast array of services, supports and amenities for added convenience, comfort, and even simple peace of mind.
The ‘Cambridge Concierge’ menu of services will provide everyone living here options for wellness services and support with daily living like meals and housekeeping. But what’s more is that clinical care is there too if needed. Independent residents at Maple can continue to enjoy life to the fullest, with the convenience and comfort of knowing they have access to additional services and amenities available at Cambridge Manor if or when required.
For example, a largely independent person living here may experience a minor health concern and require some extra short-term support during recovery and rehabilitation. Services available at Cambridge Manor can provide that support and comfort to help Maple residents get back on their feet so they can do what they love most.
Or independent-living residents can take advantage of the Cambridge Concierge services purely out of convenience, so they can choose to spend their time on the things they enjoy, whether it’s volunteer work, art classes, long walks through the Northwests’ parks or sipping on a glorious morning java at a local coffee shop.
We welcomed board members of West Campus Development Trust to join in the ground breaking, including Stephanie Felesky, Vice-Chair, and the development industry member.
HOW DOES LIVING WITHIN A COMMUNITY THAT HAS MULTI-FAMILY HOMES AND AGE-INCLUSIVE AMENITIES IMPROVE LIFE AS WE AGE?
BRENDA STRAFFORD: A community that supports multi-generational needs and age-inclusivity improves life for everyone by creating an environment that brings people of all ages together and reduces common misperceptions associated with aging.
From the social aspects of community living and access to nature and countless green spaces to host of age- and ability-inclusive fitness classes and playgrounds, to the impressive walkability — University District’s mindful design and welcoming surroundings are a fit for many, and tailor-made for those looking to embrace a new chapter in their lives.
U/D’s multi-generational park planned on the grounds of Cambridge Manor will encourage children, families and seniors within the development to interact, socialize and play, contributing to the quality of living and stronger connections for all generations in the community.

TRUMAN: Northwest Calgary is a prime area for aging gracefully — both mentally and physically. And University District is another example of that.
The joy of living in U/D means seniors can maintain control of their life and freedom, living in an urban community that’s built on connectivity, walkability and accessibility.
WHAT KIND OF SERVICES WILL BE AVAILABLE TO RESIDENTS BEYOND HEALTH CARE AND THE BASICS?
BRENDA STRAFFORD: Programs and services available to residents will focus on enriching lives and enhancing the health, wellness and independence of residents.
Amenities include shared spaces where residents can participate in interactive activities in a dedicated space where residents can partake in clinical research focused on improving the quality of seniors care and living.
Seniors in the community will also have access to amenities like an auditorium and an array of wellness programs, such as physiotherapy, rehabilitation, health and wellness seminars and fitness programs so they can live healthy, social and active lives.
Beyond that, Maple and Cambridge Manor are steps away from community parks, Save-On-Foods, public transit, cafes and a variety of shops, making accessibility easy for simple day-to-day needs. It’s all here in University District.
WHEN CHOOSING A LOCATION OF THIS DEVELOPMENT, WHY DID THE TEAM AT BRENDA STRAFFORD AND TRUMAN FEEL THAT UNIVERSITY DISTRICT WAS A GOOD FIT?
BRENDA STRAFFORD: University District was a natural fit, supporting accessibility and inclusivity at every stage, and understanding the value seniors’ contribute to a thriving community.
With every new development, we strive to break from the status quo and create something innovative that enhances the care and quality of life of those that reside in our buildings but also advances the quality of seniors care and well-being beyond the project’s location.
We believe that partnering with West Campus Development Trust at U/D will contribute to this positive change. We already have an established relationship supporting research and education at the University of Calgary and the proximity and connectedness of U/D to the University of Calgary will facilitate even greater access for researchers and students from across a number of faculties to the dynamic research and learning environment within a setting like Cambridge Manor.
TRUMAN: With our growing seniors’ population, we need to have a future-focused approach with a design that puts people first. University District addresses the needs of the people who live here, and that’s why Maple is a great fit.
The only seniors’ residence of its kind within U/D and Northwest Calgary, Maple addresses the needs and diversity of our aging population. Beyond that, by taking the needs and independence levels of seniors into consideration, we are bringing out solutions that create a sense of connectedness as we age. Together, we are bringing new possibilities to our city.
