Find a Foodie Paradise at U/D

March 20, 2025

With a variety of cuisines, University District is a hub for amazing dining in Calgary. From quick-serve restaurants like Pho Pham to fine dining like CHARCUT and everything in between, U/D continues to grow as a destination for food lovers. Continue reading for a full rundown of some of the newest culinary additions to the community.

Savour the Art of Fine Dining at CHARCUT

CHARCUT at University District has been named one of Avenue Magazine’s Best New Restaurants in Calgary! Congratulations to CHARCUT for this incredible recognition, a testament to their innovation in the Calgary culinary scene.

A proud female majority-owned and operated restaurant helmed by owners Connie DeSousa, John Jackson and Carrie Jackson, CHARCUT’s story spans over two decades. Drawing on extensive experience from their world travels and mentorship from top industry professionals, the trio developed a deep understanding of the farm-to-table philosophy and sustainable practices.

CHARCUT’s University District location features a butchery, “The Butcherina” that prepares some of the finest local meats Alberta has to offer.

Upon returning to Calgary—Connie’s hometown—the three began bringing their dream project to life. From the very beginning, they envisioned CHARCUT as a restaurant to be by locals and for everyone and intentionally laid the foundation for a collaborative hospitality community that prioritizes local and sustainable food practices. The launch of the transformative 40 Farms in 40 Days tour became a defining journey for CHARCUT, allowing its founders to build personal connections with Alberta’s local farmers, ranchers and artisan producers.

Says Connie, “We wanted to know the first names of the incredible people behind our ingredients—and ensure guests knew where their food was coming from.”

Charcut’s Pig Mortadella – a delicacy crafted with care and perfect for any charcuterie board.

One dish that holds deep sentimental value and tells the story of CHARCUT’s foundation is the Flaming Portuguese Chouriço Sausage—a third-generation recipe passed down to Chef DeSousa by her grandmother. This traditional dish from her homeland carries both nostalgia and authenticity, making it a standout item on the menu.

Beyond the food, CHARCUT has found a special place in U/D. “We love the community and how we have been embraced by everyone that lives and visits this amazing neighbourhood,” adds De Sousa. Opening in U/D has allowed them to connect with local community members, learn their stories and create a space where people can celebrate and make memories.

“Bringing a fine dining experience to a community where people can connect, celebrate, and create lasting memories is the most rewarding part of opening a restaurant. Doing it in University District was just a bit more special because of the opportunity to be part of such a dynamic and growing neighbourhood!”, adds De Sousa.

Whether you’re gathering for a special occasion or simply treating yourself to a farm-to-table meal, CHARCUT delivers an unforgettable dining experience. Don’t forget about Connie and John’s other ventures, including Connie and John’s Pizza (located inside the Alt Hotel in U/D).

Authentic Vietnamese Flavours at Pho Pham

For lovers of bold, aromatic flavours, Pho Pham is a welcomed addition to U/D’s dining options. Specializing in authentic Vietnamese cuisine, this restaurant brings the comforting warmth of traditional pho, fresh spring rolls, vermicelli bowls and more to the neighbourhood.

Pho Pham’s journey is rooted in perseverance, family and a deep love for Vietnamese heritage. Owner of Pho Pham, Coi Pham says, “We vividly remember the long nights in the kitchen, experimenting with different recipes, adjusting the balance of flavours, and perfecting our dishes.” Coi adds, “We didn’t have much at the time—just a few pots, a small kitchen, and a big dream. It wasn’t just about the food; it was about building something together as a family.” This commitment to quality and community is reflected in every dish they serve.

Located on the corner next to Easy Optometry and Lagree YYC, Pho Pham offers a charming interior and authentic cuisine, making it the perfect spot for a delicious bite.

If Pho Pham’s story were a dish, it would undoubtedly be their signature pho sate soup. “Each spoonful of that rich broth reminds us of the long nights we spent together as a family, constantly pushing forward, never giving up, even when things seemed impossible,” Coi Pham explains. The pho sate is a testament to their dedication and resilience, a dish that represents the strength of their journey and the dream that has now become a reality.

Opening in U/D has been incredibly rewarding for the Pho Pham team. “The best part of opening in University District has been the chance to share our Vietnamese culture with so many different people,” says Coi Pham. “Seeing students, faculty and community members discover new flavours and traditions has been a highlight, turning each meal into a cultural experience that brings people together.”

Whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner, their welcoming atmosphere and flavourful dishes make every visit feel like home.

Experience the Bold Flavours of Mexico at Native Tongues Taqueria

A staple in Calgary since 2015, Native Tongues Taqueria is known for its award-winning take on authentic Mexican cuisine. With three locations across the city, this taqueria has become a go-to for those craving bold flavours, a vibrant atmosphere and an exceptional mezcal selection.

Let the neon lights guide you into an interior that blends rustic charm with modern vibrancy.

For Head Chef Fernando Castro, food has always been about connection. “Growing up in a Mexican household, every meal was an opportunity to gather, share stories and celebrate life’s simplest pleasures,” Castro recalls. His love for hospitality was shaped by childhood memories in his grandmother’s kitchen, where the smell of freshly made tortillas and salsas filled the air.

Three words to describe Native Tongues Taqueria: Warmth, Community, Tradition.

If Native Tongues Taqueria’s journey were a dish, it would be Barbacoa

Chef Castro says, “Just like the barbacoa technique, Native Tongues is all about slow, careful preparation. It takes time, patience and attention to detail, but the end result is something truly special.”

One of the most sentimental dishes on the menu is the char-grilled Carne Asada tacos, inspired by the smoky street food traditions of Sinaloa. “These tacos take me back to my hometown, where the aroma of grilled meat filled the air at sunset. It was more than just a meal—it was a ritual, a way to connect with family and friends,” adds Castro.

Opening a location in University District has allowed Native Tongues Taqueria to introduce authentic Mexican flavours to a new community. Seeing the joy on people’s faces when they taste real Mexican food and creating a space where guests feel at home has been the most fulfilling part for their team.
