April Showers & Spring Flowers: A Tour of the Best Parks in University District
April 24, 2025
Spring is here! With longer days and warmer weather upon us, now is the time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine in University District. From the beautiful Central Commons Park to the natural oasis found in the North and South ponds and inclusive playground at Northwest Commons Park, U/D has plenty of green spaces and parks ready to explore.
Studio Luma LED Flower Display

Keep an eye out for the captivating flower displays along Retail Main Street
These one-of-a-kind arrangements feature a stunning mix of natural blooms and subtle LED flowers by Studio Luma, creating a welcoming and whimsical atmosphere day and night. The lights automatically turn on at 9 PM.
This multi-faceted project involved the creation of custom designed wall coverings inside a parkade elevator lobby to create a mystical tree, leading up to a canopy of LED lights and foliage. Departing from the parkade elevator immerses the viewer in lush flower beds with custom LED flowers, and illuminations projected on to the wall facing the elevator.
Central Commons Park
At the heart of U/D lies Central Commons Park, a lively and welcoming hub with its wide-open green space, inviting seating areas, and proximity to great local retailers. This park is an ideal place for everything from laid-back picnics to spontaneous meetups with friends. As the warmer months approach, the park truly comes to life. A seasonal splash pad offers a way for kids and families to cool off, while briquette BBQs make it a popular spot for cookouts and outdoor gatherings. Central Commons Park is also home to the U/D Night Market, which takes place on the last Wednesday of the month from May to September. The U/D Night Market is a time when the community comes together to enjoy live entertainment, shop from local vendors, and soak up the summer atmosphere. Join us for the first U/D Night Market on May 28, 2025.

Getting out and enjoying the warm spring weather is easy in U/D.
Northwest Commons Park
Located on the north side of Retail Main Street at 4165 Norford Avenue NW, Northwest Commons Park is an award-winning and fully accessible space designed with inclusivity in mind.
The playground is a PlayCore National Demonstration site for inclusive play and includes a ramp system, accessible flooring, tactile and musical play elements, a saucer swing, a roller slide, and rubber flooring. With longer days hours now upon us, it’s a great time to head outdoors and spend your evening enjoying the fresh spring air.
North & South Dog Parks
In U/D, it’s not just humans who get to enjoy the great outdoors—your furry friends are welcome, too! The north dog park is a place where pups can roam free, burn off some energy, and make a few new four-legged friends. Featuring a spacious, fenced-in area that separates small and large dogs with their own designated sections. This park offers a mix of open space for play and shaded spots where pet parents can kick back and relax.

The north dog park is conveniently connected to University District’s pathway network, making for easy access on a longer walk.
Planned for future development, the south dog park will boast all of the same amazing features as its north counterpart, but will be located in University District’s south neighbourhood, which is currently undergoing preparations for future residential development in the near future.
Whether you’re tossing a frisbee, training your pup, or just enjoying the tail wags, U/D’s dog parks are a must-visit for dog owners in the community.
The North Pond
Tucked into the northernmost part of the community, the North Pond offers a serene escape from the daily hustle. The tiered bench wall overlooking the storm pond is an ideal place to flip through your latest read, catch up with a friend, or sit in peace surrounded by greenery. The multi-purpose stormwater pond isn’t just practical—it’s a scenic spot with beautiful landscaping and tranquil views.

University District offers a variety of stunning green spaces to read, enjoy a scenic walk, or a spot to gather with friends.
The South Pond
Much like its northern counterpart, the South Pond offers a peaceful, picturesque escape from the everyday. With its winding pathways, natural water feature, and beautiful views, it’s the best place for a leisurely jog, reflective walk, or simply soaking in the sights and sounds of nature.

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the sighting of ducks and other local birds.
For bird watchers, spring is an especially exciting time as migrating birds return to the area. Keep your eyes peeled for familiar favourites like the Black-capped Chickadee, Black-billed Magpie, Northern Flicker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Blue Jay, and of course, Canadian Geese. With so much to see (and hear), the South Pond is a true hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and curious observers alike.
“The Green Spine”
Soak up the sunshine and fresh air and shake off the winter chill. “The Green Spine,” as it is unofficially referred to, is a lush, linear park located west of University Heights that meanders through U/D, linking neighbourhoods and key amenities. Its wide pathways are ideal for joggers, cyclists and casual walkers alike. Along the way, you’ll discover inviting seating areas and beautifully landscaped greenery, making it easy to slow down, relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Spring runs at U/D offer the ideal mix of fresh air, scenic views, and the chance to explore every inch of the community.
Nearby Adventures: Edworthy Park & Bow River Pathways

The Bow River pathway is a network of pedestrian and bicycle paths developed along the banks of the Bow River.
Just a short distance from U/D, Edworthy Park and the Bow River Pathways offer even more opportunities to explore the outdoors. These beloved Calgary destinations are ideal for biking, walking, picnicking, or simply enjoying a change of scenery. With river access and expansive green space, they’re a natural extension of your University District outdoor adventure.
More to Come…
As University District continues to grow, we’re expanding not only our retail offerings but also our green spaces. The addition of the Lookout Parks, to be located in the south residential neighbourhood will offer some of the most stunning views in the city. With west facing sightlines stretching over the communities of Montgomery and Bowmont, and clear views of the Bow River, WinSport, and the distant Rocky Mountains, these hidden gems are perfect for everything from morning walks to sunset watching. Stay tuned for more information about these spaces.
