Winter doesn’t have to mean staying indoors. University District is turning cold days into something to look forward to with another season of skating at the Central Commons Park outdoor skating rink, along with a lineup of cozy, crave-worthy après skating experiences. Whether you’re lacing up for a spin on the ice, warming up by the fire, or grabbing a hot drink or bowl of soup after, U/D offers an easy, feel-good way to beat the winter blues.
Read on to learn more about how the outdoor skating rink creates a vibrant outdoor destination all season long.

Calgary is known for unpredictable weather, and chinook winds can make maintaining consistent, high-quality ice a challenge. The skating rink spans 131 feet by 131 feet and uses a CO2 refrigeration system that allows for consistent temperature control across the surface. This modern system ensures smooth, reliable skating conditions while also supporting energy efficiency. The rink is also regularly maintained with an ice resurfacer. The result is an outdoor rink that stays open and enjoyable for longer than traditional outdoor rinks.
Don’t have skates at home, or just feeling spontaneous? Skate Hut in Central Commons Park makes it easy to jump on the ice. With on-site skate rentals and sharpening services, visitors can lace up with easy access to equipment. Skate rentals are only available during select hours, so make sure to check them out before planning your next skate.

Rentals are a simple and accessible way to enjoy the rink, whether you are visiting with family, meeting friends, or trying skating for the first time.

After a few laps on the ice, gather around one of our award-winning fire features to warm up and rest. These cozy spots add to the atmosphere of the park and create natural places to pause, chat and take in the winter scenery.

Skating is only part of the experience. One of the best parts of visiting the rink is what comes after. U/D is home to plenty of spots to warm up, refuel and relax.

Bundle up and join us on Sunday, January 25, 2026, from 1 to 4 PM for an afternoon of winter fun in Central Commons Park.

Enjoy a unique sledge hockey experience with AdaptAbility, music from DJ GOODBAR, live ice carving by Julian Lee, and time on the outdoor rink. The first 300 people will receive free s’mores kits to be used on wood-burning fire pits, making it a perfect way to embrace the season and spend quality time with your family.
