Hidden U/D ‘Easter Eggs’ You May or May Not Know About

Have you ever walked through University District (U/D) and noticed the little details that make it feel so unique? From the names of our streets to the artwork tucked into unexpected places, U/D is filled with hidden “Easter eggs” that reflect the thought, creativity and community pride that went into designing the neighbourhood.

Encore Artwork

Encore at University District features a permanent art exhibition, “Colour in Time,” by Saskatoon-based artist Jerry Allen. The collection features 32 colour field abstractions and 8 representational landscapes, exploring how colour expresses the emotional and sensory dimensions of time. Installed throughout the building, Allen’s pieces transform everyday moments into immersive, contemplative experiences, adding inspiration and personality to life at Encore.

At Encore, art is part of the experience. Jerry Allen’s “Colour in Time” brings creativity and connection to every corner of the building.

Encore offers 303 rental units with amenities for students and young professionals, including a rooftop courtyard, a fitness centre and yoga space, co-working and study lounges, and welcoming social spaces.

Aria Artwork

Aria, a purpose-built rental building, takes the artistic spirit of University District apartment living and adds a musical twist. Each floor showcases artwork inspired by a different musician, infusing the building with energy, creativity and a sense of harmony. Inspired by music and theatre, Aria’s design encourages connection and interaction, creating spaces where residents can come together in fun and memorable ways. Aria worked with local Calgary artist Tay Odynski, who created a series of custom pieces exclusively for the building. Each artwork reflects Aria’s musical theme while complementing the interior’s finishes and tones.

Odynski’s pieces turn Aria into a living gallery that inspires connection, creativity, and a shared love of the arts.

Along with its artistic flair, Aria offers a wide range of amenities. Residents can stay active in the fully equipped gym and yoga studio, unwind in the games room and lounge, or gather in the large communal kitchen and dining area. The expansive second-level courtyard features eight BBQ areas, a pickleball court, a bocce court, and a fenced pet play area, perfect for balancing an active, social and stress-free lifestyle.

Magna by jayman built – floorplan Names

At Magna by Jayman BUILT, every floorplan has a unique theme named after influential scientists like The Isaac (Newton), The Leonardo (Da Vinci), and The Albert (Einstein). The name Magna itself draws from the Latin phrase “Magna Cum Laude,” meaning “with great praise.” It symbolizes Jayman’s commitment to achieving excellence, showcasing the highest level of design, craftsmanship, and finishings ever delivered in any of their projects. Together, the floorplan names and the building’s title create a cohesive narrative of brilliance and achievement. Original Art Installations: Dogs of U/D Mural, Colourful Sea Can and Flags

Art isn’t just confined to the interiors. U/D features several unique public art installations, including:

Dogs of U/D art Mural

The dog mural, located in the parking lot beside the University District Sales and Discovery Centre, was created by Calgary chalk artist Rozzie Lee. This colourful mural celebrates the four-legged residents and visitors of University District. During the 2022 Tails and Treasures event, Rozzie spent the day on-site capturing portraits and photos of local pets. Inspired by those moments, she later transformed her sketches into a lively mural that reflects U/D’s pet-friendly spirit and helps beautify the community space.

Similar to the Sea Cans, University District partnered with local artist Tyler Lemermeyer to showcase his talents and transform everyday spaces, creating distinctive flags located at the Sales & Discovery Centre. These creative elements turn ordinary objects into engaging works of art, enhancing the community’s character and charm.

All-Season Planters

Finally, U/D’s streetscapes are adorned with all-season planters, showcasing beautiful plants year-round. This attention to detail highlights the dedication to creating a neighbourhood that is inviting, vibrant and ever-changing with the seasons.
